I do not think that Katie ever stopped being a Catholic, even though she said nice things about Scientology and took Scientology courses. But that all was an act --- she wanted to make Tom feel good about their marriage. Let’s be real -- I am sure that she did the Internet search before marrying Tom and found plenty of anti-Scientology data, including the Xenu story. I do not think that after encountering so much negative information about the cult a normal person would become a Scientologist.

I imagined myself having a date with a female Scientologist. Prior to that date I would have done my Internet search and found out that this so-called religion is a scam. But I would not tell her what I know about CoS. Instead I would pretend that I am really, really interested in her religion. If things go well between us and we continue dating, I would take couple of inexpensive Scientology courses just to impress her. But that does not mean that I am taking Scientology seriously. In the end our relationship would end because I would refuse to make a fool out of myself by taking expensive Bridge courses.

I think something of this sort happened to Katie -- although spending the money on the Bridge courses was not a problem for her, she got tired of lying about her fascination with Scientology. Then, of course, she does not want her daughter to follow in her husband’s footsteps.

I was an atheist long time ago. Not anymore. Now I see the atheism as a delusion.

Hubbard himself wrote policy letters in which he explains that $ is only framed as a "religion" for legal and financial purposes. (I'm quoting Nancy Many here who says she worked for Hubbard directly.)

I have no problem with the opinion that all religions/beliefs are irrational, but equating Scientology to the catholic church as both are "irrational beliefs" misses some very important points about Scientology's specific behaviors, intentions and strategies.

She has returned to the faith in the alien implant! AMen, good for you KAtie.

For those who consider organized religion irrational, it may be, but the faith involved is something that is real for the adherents. You can walk into most churches of any christian denomination look around and know where they stand on things, where their faith can be found, without having some sales person come up and sell you a book so you can read for yourself. Scientology, cult, scam, flim-flam, is supposed to be based on fact, with little room for faith, but they connect with that need for faith, so they can keep people paying for higher levels with the believe that the next step is the best, highest, and most helpful one they will ever take.

Glib, Katie may have stopped being a practicing Catholic while being married to Tom, but she remained a Catholic insofar as the Catholic Church is concerned. She was never excommunicated by the CC.
