Quote:
Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette request to Quebec and Ottawa to open a
investigation into the Church of Scientology and to review the tax status
the body.

"For me, this is a for-profit organization. There are 40 companies
within the so-called church. And I think it's fraud, "
said Senator.

She said the Church of Scientology enjoys the largesse of the tax system,
and this, especially in Quebec, where since 1993, the Scientologists are treated
the same footing as all other religions, unlike France and
Germany, which does not recognize them.

The activities of the Church of Scientology have been widely documented by
the investigation of the JE.

Scientologists in Quebec invoking Article 204 of the Act
municipal taxation, which stipulates that "are exempt from property taxes,
[...] a municipal or school building used for non income but
in pursuit of its constituent objects in nature
charitable ... "

This is exactly what the senator questioned. "I, for me
concerned, I think we should do an investigation. It exploits people. We
I think extorts money when I see the price that is paid for
course. And anyway, I wish them good luck to prove it
a true religion. This is not one, "
said Celine Hervieux-Payette.

The headquarters of the Church of Scientology in the city, located at 4489 Street
Papineau, is estimated at around 700,000 dollars, but by virtue of their status,
Scientologists do not pay municipal tax, no school tax not
more and can also issue charitable receipts. That is what is delivered
question.

Always taking advantage of their tax status, Scientologists have also
bought a beautiful building on Sainte-Catherine, downtown
to increase their visibility. They will not pay property tax, no
school taxes either.

Amen to that! And if Canada successfully revokes the Co$'s tax-exempt status, it could set a legal precedent that could be useful to other countries where the "church" is cheating tax payers out of revenue.

If memory serves, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the right to, "such religious practices as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."

This arguably makes the CoS's status more vulnerable than in some places.
