CoS-mocker Ricky Gervais will host the Awards on Jan. 15, 2012, with no worries about Scientology jokes offending a nominee!
Nominee List is at http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/15/movie ... inees.html . If I have missed a new CoS celeb, please post. Thanks.

I do not think that CoS have a long list of celebrities. I would not call, for example, Jenna Elfman a "celebrity" -- she is just an actrice who participated in several mediocre movies and had her unremarkable TV show, Dharma and Greg.

Since the early 2000's I've been commenting on the dearth of Scientologists at Hollywood Award ceremonies. It's been downhill since Tom Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman.

True, and the news media is also realising that the idea of scientology working for celebrities is a unique and dubious point of view.

Quote:
Daily Mail 16th Dec 2011

Kirstie needs Cruise control

Its 25 years since Top Gun, and Tom Cruise looks not a year older.
He attributes this to rigorous exercise and a strict diet — of Scientology.
Funny how fellow Scientologist Kirstie Alley is the same generation as Tom, yet Tom’s prescription for youth hasn’t had any effect on her.

I wonder if Tom Cruise can attribute any increased success he might get out of the 4th Mission Impossible movie from the fact that he's conciously made an effort not to publically rant like an idiot about scientology and psychiatry.

No presenters that are Scientologists, for this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards. Nicole Kidman represents the growing number of ex-Scientologists. Mila Kunis represents friends too smart to join Scientology - she went to Celebrity Centre's Christmas Stories apparently as a favor to That 70's Show co-star Danny Masterson. She has now far surpassed Danny in fame, box office, and awards. Ricky Gervais still hosting Jan. 15, 5 PM Pacific Standard Time on NBC.

update Friday Jan 13:
"The Hollywood Foreign Press Association just announced the third round of presenters which includes Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Channing Tatum, Seth Rogen, Queen Latifah, Dustin Hoffman, Paula Patton and Julianne Moore."

Welcome to Hollywierd. Celebs were aghast at Gervais last year, and producers insinuated he would never be asked back, but here he is. Awards show producers love controversy and lampooning celebrities because all the post-show chatter results in higher ratings and viewer's interest.

Media reported last year that Johnny Depp was offended for being the butt of a Gervais joke, yet Gervais says Depp approached him after the awards & congratulated him. Depp appears with Gervais on a TV ad for this year's awards.

It's no different than the celebrities who claim to hate the paparazzi, yet have their PR people call them and inform them of the star's whereabouts. It's Hollywierd.

I suspect Ashton Kutcher, Russell Brand, and Tom Cruise will be complaining tomorrow.

No Scientology jokes in the whole show, no Scientologists on the stage, the red carpet, or in the audience (that I saw). It's like they've disappeared from the Hollywood A-list.

The Golden Globes must have been declared suppressive after last years. They should have issued the Golden Globes with a Goldenrod.

Tony Ortega at the Village Voice spotted this.....

Did You See a Scientology Ad This Weekend?

What the actual FUCK. Was that really a commercial for scientology?

The Church of Scientology bought network TV ad time in a big way this weekend. On Saturday, we started noticing Twitter users complaining that they were running into Scientology ads on Hulu -- a place where the church's ads have been pretty common in the past. But then that night, a lengthy ad showed up during the Miss America pageant, prompting a burst of mocking tweets. Then, Sunday, things really got interesting.

Twitter users seemed shocked when the lengthy ads showed up during Sunday afternoon's football playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. (I didn't catch the commercial myself, but judging from the way Twitter users described it, the ad was a version of the 2-minute film that pops up when you first visit the church's official site, Scientology.org.)

Easily the biggest reaction we saw on Twitter came Sunday evening when the Golden Globes broadcast started out with the same Scientology advert.

Eric Lane on Twitter wrote:
Scientology ad on the NBC Golden Globes carpet show. Pre-emtive strike? #goldenglobes

Dan Drokos on Twitter wrote:
I can't believe the Scientology commercial during the Golden Globes didn't mention how much it costs to be a member!

[...continued in article link...]

Tony talks to ex-scientology marketing exec Jeff Hawkins who explains how it works behind the scenes and summarizes thus:
Quote:
"It doesn't really do anything for them. I mean, it might get a little pip on their website, but really, what they do these days is just try to excite the existing members," he says.

It's great that the talented Peter Dinklage, a little person, won Best Supporting Actor in a Mini-Series, TV Movie, or Series. Has anyone ever seen a little person taking courses or working at a Scientology org or in Sea Org?

Joan Rivers on Charlize Theron's dress:
Quote:
That slit was so high Tom Cruise could just walk right in
I overheard this and missed the exact quote. It was on Fashion Police on "E" cable network, and the show will repeat again and again this week, so anyone want who watches it, please catch the exact words. Joan Rivers delivered all the cheerfully profane snark that Ricky Gervais wasn't allowed to.

Congrats, Tom, Joan Rivers thinks you're A-list enough to mock.
