Almost every news media ignored the event. The OC Weekly in Orange County talked about the winners. Lake Forest Writer Published in L. Ron Hubbard Anthology

Most other stories were PR releases put out by CoS groups.

What really amazes me is that they must have spent a considerable sum on organising this event yet the prize money is embrassingly pathetic.
From their own press release:
Quote:
[...]

The red-carpet event, the 28th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards, offers recognition for both writers and illustrators with trophies, prize money and royalties totaling more than $30,000
[...]

After selecting 12 writing winners and 12 illustration winners, the top four entries in each side of the contest are rejudged to choose two Gold Award winners, each of whom takes home a second trophy and a check for $5,000.

They are as tight as a camel's arse in a sandstorm.
The lack of financial reward wouldn't be so bad if the award actually meant something but it doesn't really, especially after the bad press.

Hubbard was a mediocre sci-fi writer, I do not think that winning one of his sci-fi contests is a tremendous boost to one’s writing career.

However, the genre mentioned in the article is fantasy. I am not a fan of the fantasy genre (I kind of hate it), so I do not really know if the Hubbard fantasy contests are beneficial to their participants.

Someone should write a short story about Xenu and submit it, or perhaps rewrite the entire OT3 thing but change it enough to get past the copyright deal.
