Sydney Org @ Belmore Park

Post by Tamaritha » Tue Apr 04, 2006 1:24 pm

Just a short account of an org event that recently occurred.

A couple of weeks ago, Sydney's Castleragh St org set up a yellow tent on the Eddy Ave side of Belmore Park.

The tent was I think what they call a goldenrod yellow. The org wore t-shirts of the same colour. There was nothing on the front, but on the back there was the $cientology symbol and a short line reading something along the lines of "volunteer minister for the church of scientology".

No clerical collars.

There were large posters of Elron in greyscale, and a couple of tables set up within the tent. All other posters were quotes or plug lines for Dianetics. The banner etc all proclaimed a new way to save your life, but nothing obtrusively linking it with the Church itself.

It's interesting how they always call Hubbard "Elron". I mean, having a messiah in the name of "Lafayette" I guess would be rather embarrassing, and prevent otherwise gullible people from joining.

A few people did accept leaflets and were led into the tent, which was open on one side. There weren't many people inside though, just 3 - 4 org staffers standing around.

There were three more org members accosting passers-by, but never actually calling anything out, or trying to grab their attention. They also only held three or four glossy brochures at any one time.
(perhaps to appear as rational people who weren't there just to hand things out, and to somehow show that by having few leaflets, making people assume others have decided to take and read the leaflets, further adding mass appeal?)

The fact that the Eddy Ave side of Belmore Park is next to busy bus stops, hence rushing people, as well as having student Socialists set up camp on the other side made it rather unattractive.

All in all, it was probably a dismal failure.

Now for a personal account of how exactly I came across it:

As me and a friend of mine walked past, one of them approached us with a leaflet.
I said out loud, "Oh <execrement> <derogatory sexual term>, we're targeted by $cientologists!!!"
My friend said "Oh my gawd, isn't that L.Ron Hubbard the science fiction writer?" while looking at the posters.
I said "Yes. LAFAYETTE Ron Hubbard. At least Christianity believes in a Messiah with a cooler name"

... At this point in time, a few of them turned away. Some were looking at us from a safe distance. We don't blame them. We both had a bad day, and if they thought entheta were just running around the world to cause them problems, well, we won't do anything to discourage them.

My friend said "Oh really, what's this scientology about?"
I said "WELL IT'S ABOUT AN INTERGALACTIC FEDERATION A LA STAR TREK IN WHICH A LORD, CALLED XENU OR XEMU, HE COULDN'T MAKE UP HIS MIND..."

My friend shushed me and dragged me off by the back of my collar... but I was an embarrassment to the last minute:

"BUT I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO YOU ABOUT THE CLAAAAAMS!!!" :albino:
That's what you get when you bring Postulation into a MEST fight.
