Not really sure I appreciated the scieno terms attached to the options, but I love the new format and changes.

Well, it's a little too early to tell.

I love being able to get all the posts a poster has posted by clicking on his/her name.

I'm been crawling through the jungle of new info on my belly and scratching my head and making a fool of myself.

So....for those of us are technically challenged.....here are my four questions of the day:

1. What is a BBCode and why do you have to disable it everytime you have a http Url to post?

2. Is the link feature gone?

3. Can you no longer change the color of some words?

4. Why is there an email addy avaailbe in the private message section of the person who sends you a private message?

Another one:

5. Is there a "Last Day"?

I love the new style board.

BUT-The "last day" feature was **so important** I'd sacrafice all the new
(really nice) bells,whistles, formatting.

If you are having an active on going debate in two or three threads
in a matter of seconds you can see what/who is going on in that debate
witha couple clicks.

As nice as the new board is: If you are actively following a debate on line
and you check back for new responses "regularly" you loose all sense of continuity in your mind of how it is progressing by not being able to glance at the thread in an analog way. It breaks your stride.

All the additional steps required to find out that there are 4 more posts since last viewing on a thread wastes time and energy Id rather use in composing my post.

Metaphor: I have an old fashioned mail box with a red flag that tells me the mail man picked up my outgoing mail which I can see from my living room window. Just a quick glance.

Visually,If you take that red flag off of my mailbox-it might force me to call the mailman and and ask him if he picked up my mail or not.
Wasted time and energy.

I hate to say it but, for me the "Last Day" feature is the deal breaker,as much as I like the new changes.

If you check for new messages once a day or less-then the last day feature isn't critical to you at all.

It forces you to interface with the software much more than wanted/needed.

So,yea it's a brand new shiny car, but now I find out I have to pay double the price for premium gas.

Before you could physically SEE the board and the activity.

Now you must rely on data, updates and alerts.
"Last Day" feature is fast-spontaneous.

Another example: If I am in a hurry to go somewhere, I can bang out a quick post using "last day" feature.
Really can't do that now. Much to slow. Probably 4X slower. for me.

I'm pretty sure there are plugins for this software that will allow a preconfigured advanced search that will return 'Last Day' results list similar to the old software.

BBCode is similar to the simplified HTML codes in the old board, like \b{bold}. In BBCode you write bold to do the same.

More on BBCode here:
faq.php?mode=bbcode
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

You do not need to turn it off to make a link. If you just type a link, like this http://www,xenu.net/ it will automaticly be made into a link. If you want to make a text into a link you need to do as described here: faq.php?mode=bbcode#8
tigger wrote:2. Is the link feature gone?
Linking is done automaticly as described above, or you can use the "URL" button.
tigger wrote:3. Can you no longer change the color of some words?
Higlight the word(s), then select from the "Font color" drop down menu above.

Read more here: faq.php?mode=bbcode#2
tigger wrote:4. Why is there an email addy avaailbe in the private message section of the person who sends you a private message?
If they have allowed you to see their e-mail address then that is available.
tigger wrote:5. Is there a "Last Day"?
Not yet. It's the next feature we are looking at implementing. The challenge is that we have already added a lot of non standard features which makes it a challenge when we in the future must upgrade the message board. We have to talk nice to Frode to get this implemeted. :)

Ahhh. the world goes topsy turvy.
Posts change order when you post a reply.

Thanks Andreas and all for the info. I've CCP'd it to save for later when I decide to try some of those things.

Right now I've got a headache. I've been trying to figure out Good Quotes.....I won't elaborate. Anyone want to post a good quote and comment on what happens to them there?

Last Day

Post by Galileo » Thu Jul 28, 2005 12:00 pm

I agree that Last Day was THE essential feature of the old OCMB. Without it (and Last Week) navigating through topics to find the new posts takes too damned much time.

I wish every forum had a Last Day feature.

Since I've been back on dialup I have really appreciated forums and sites that require fewer clicks to accomplish things. I really liked the old software because you could post to a thread right on that thread, without clicking "post reply" and waiting for yet another page to load.

On the main page one can't tell if a new quote has been posted (there's no "Last poster" info).

Also when you click on Good Quotes you go to "Page 1". This is in fact the *oldest page* so you then have to click on "Page 78" to see the newest post.

Also each page only holds about 5 quotes before the page runs out so you have to click again.

I much appreciate all the effort and work Andreas and Frode have put in to give us Clambakers a better board, but in my honest opinion the Old Board was great, and it's only failing was that it was a bit slow.
