I liked the old OCMB ( I'll bet you get tired of reading that!) in that you could upload a much larger image to your profile, and that image would be automatically shrunk to tiny size for your avatar.

I have to dissapoint you, that will probably only be implemented if it comes as a standard feature in a future realease of phpBB.
