Take a look at those stress/expansion deformaties in the midship hull, just above the water line.
Although experts say that such a thing is inevitable on the skin of any hull and in most cases quite normal, it is worth noting. It certainly doesn't look very nice or comforting :o. Question is, how far does it go before it becomes less about cosmetics and more about structural integrity? I've heard that some modern fancy cruiseliners have temperature control behind the skin of the hull in order to reduce such unsightly distortions.
The problem with the Freewinds though is not that structural integrity is compromised to the point that the ship is going to snap in two any time soon given its current light tasks but more that the distortion of the skin, along with the vibrations in transit, is the thing that causes the blue asbestos coatings on the inside to flake off and go airbourne.

Sponge, thanks for the re-upload for hi res photo. I've been having some trouble properly downloading assorted large photos from Picasa, no idea why.

That's the first time I've seen the hull "wrinkles" on that part of the Freewinds hull. The "wrinkles" were noted previously in a WWP thread (don't remember which thread) but I don't recall noticing those "stretch marks" that close to the water line.

Maybe the hull is reinforced by tin foil :P

There's a few crinkly bottom (ooerr) pics dotted around various galleries here and on WWP I'm sure, as well as the ones we've seen on the bow of the hull.
For example, the picasweb gallery in the OP of this thread for 2008 October:

Here's a close-up one from the bow/stern Oct 25, 2008

CoS must photo-shop out the flaws. Thanks for the real photos to spread the word, to stay away from this dirty old scow.
