Whats new in Portland

Post by omnom » Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:14 am

I just thought I'd liven things up in this lonely ol' Oregon forum.

Fairly recent goings on in Portland:
* The long-standing Portland Org and CC on Salmon is long gone. The Org is now in a "temporary" leased office location at the Century Building on 12th. Very little foot traffic expect for the local half-way house (who are aware of potential recruiting actions) and the neighbor's smoke breaks.
* The first Ideal Org building in Portland (the Stevens Building) was purchased for over $5million (5.35, IIRC,) sat empty, and has quietly been placed back on the books, now being sold for a considerably lower asking price.
* The second Ideal Org building has been purchased (Sherlock Building,) but I'm not aware of renos or other activity going on there. Could we be the first city with *2* empty Ideal Orgs?
* A new mission seems to have popped up in Multnomah Village, with no sighted participants (expect the usually-unlit bright blue neon sign) and they appear to be behind on their fire department inspection.
* Silkin Management (a WISE company) has moved to just outside the Portland area proper. This used to be Hollander Consultants, who changed their name a couple of years back.

Anyone know of any other interesting stuff going on in stump-town?

local newsmedia article from 7th Dec 2010...

Downtown's steak house wars just got a little more intense with today's Portland Business Journal story about Ruth's Chris Steak House's plans to move from a seedy stretch of Southwest Third Avenue to a space in the Pacific Center building on Broadway, just one block south of Pioneer Courthouse Square.

The new Ruth's Chris space was recently remodeled to accommodate Zell Bros. Jewelers, a high-end jewelry and china retailer that went out of business before ever moving in. The building that Ruth's Chris currently occupies is owned by the Church of Scientology, which intends to redevelop the space as part of its Portland headquarters.

The move looks like a smart one for Ruth's Chris, which currently is in a part of downtown populated by adult-oriented businesses. The new location puts the steak house on one of downtown's busiest streets, within blocks of five large hotels and the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, giving theatergoers one more dining

Ruth's Chris on the Move; Scientologists Taking its Spot

So it's not exactly news that the Portland location of national chain Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is moving from its strip-club flanked locale into fancier digs downtown (the long-standing rumor was confirmed today that Ruth's will anchor downtown's Pacific Center on the corner of Southwest Taylor and Broadway).

Here's what's hilariously newsworthy: Ruth's old digs on SW Third will apparently be turned into the Portland headquarters for the Church of Scientology (we shit you not), which, as we would like to remind you, will be flanked by strip clubs. Amazing.

Ruth's Chris' new downtown location is scheduled to open next spring.

Yeah, funny that. The previous Org/CC was on Broadway and Salmon, which much classier area, also near Pioneer Courthouse Square (now familiar to more people after the planned terr'ist attack recently.)

They used to be near the Hilton and Heathman hotels, and a number of nice shopping and dining areas. The seafood place a block down must have taken the sting out of the news when their lease was not renewed, though:
