Knowledge Report: Mark Bunker's Movie

Post by barbiedoll » Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:58 pm

I know that Mark has a request for support for this project on the start-up page of this site, but I have to say, I really hope he gets all the funding that he needs to complete this movie because it will be life changing when it is finished. I saw this excerpt and it broke my heart.

I didn't know about this project until this weekend, but Mark is going around the world interviewing ex-Scientologists, and he seems to have spoken to EVERYBODY, all the main players. On You Tube, Mark has published preview sections of his work in tiny segments, and if you follow the link here, you can see the section of some 45 interviews already available. I watched them all and I feel devastated by many of the stories, but still hopeful that when this film is completed, people will finally know the truth about CoS.

Here is a trailer for the movie:

I think if you click on this link of Marty Rathbun talking about Lisa McPherson, you can watch the first one, and they keep playing, one right after the other....

Again, apologies if this has been posted before, but I'm very excited about this project. I think he's still asking for support, as travel costs are expensive and he is trying to include as many stories as he can:

Mark, you're a hero in my eyes, and I'm glad you are out there doing the work you are doing. It takes courage.

Mark Bunker recently told Tony Ortega that he is going forward with his movie about Scientology, called Knowledge Report, and hopes to have a rough cut by May 2016.

In order to complete the film he has asked for $5000 in donations, and has about $1000 to go.

Pope, you make some valid points. It has taken me too long to finish this film. I hope to rectify that soon. As for the clips I put online, let me just say that those do not represent edited moments from the movie. They were chosen as interesting moments from my lengthy interviews with these people to show who was sitting down to be part of the film. Those soundbites may not appear at all and if they do, they will certainly not be dropped in as is. However, after the film is finished the whole interviews will be made available and I hope they are found to be interesting.

As far as the film being talking heads, well that's certainly part of the mix even though it is not the favored way to do it. I love films like Cartel Land that drop you into the middle of the action and let you piece together your own understanding of the characters and situations. I know that in movies, you are supposed to tell, not show. I came to a decision early on that this is an incredibly complex story to tell and would need narration to tell it. As I understand it, even Going Clear was cut at first without narration but then it had to be added when people said they couldn't follow everything. From the get go, I have called this a personal essay knowing that I would be narrating it, partly because of my gigantic ego but also because I have had so many interesting interactions over the years with Scientologists bullbaiting me. "What are your crimes, Mark" would lead people to ask, "who is this Mark they keep talking about?" Okay, it's me. I'm telling the story. Here's what I've found. It's not going to win an Oscar but people over the years have seemed to respond favorably to me and I'm counting on a more mainstream audience to do so as well.

As for the offer of some CGI, I would normally not quote personal emails but since you did, I will try to put it in perspective. You emailed me out of the blue offering a particular shot:
"I was thinking of animating big blue but don't really have the time. If you can get me $500 I'll do a photoreal night animation of standing under this sign starting here:

Image

The cam can float up the to sign and see the hollywood hills in the bknd. in full hd. It would make a great opening shot or trailer shot for your movie. Makes them think you have more money than you do so they give you more money. Once I make the model I can easily do other animations like simulated time lapse, the sign being lit by unseen fireworks, etc.
I wasn't convinced you could do a truly photo real animation that wouldn't look cheap or was better than the footage of Big Blue I had already shot. If you had approached me with an offer to do some animation for the film, I would have gladly looked into it but it appeared to me you needed $500 and wanted to sell me a shot I really didn't need. Still, I thought I need some sort of company logo, so I would pay you the $500 for the logo and if the Big Blue shot was good I would have used it.

Well, it's something I'm not sure I need. Would you toss in a company logo for the top of the film?

AngryGayPope
What does your logo look like?

Mark Bunker
to AngryGayPope
I don't have one. Any Ideas?

AngryGayPope@aol.com
Well, uh telling me the name of your company would be a start!

Mark Bunker
to AngryGayPope
WBM. Wise Beard Media or Wise Beard Man. Perhaps using that
Anonymous black and white image of me in some way.

AngryGayPope@aol.com
That's vague. Where would the logo animation be used? How long should it be? Is this the name of your production company? The name of the movie is "Knowledge Report" right? Animations of stacks of paper or huge looming files and folders might work for "knowledge report."

Mark Bunker
to AngryGayPope
I'm thinking of a company ID that would run maybe 10 seconds long to
go at the beginning of the film, along the lines of the MGM lion, the
Columbia Studios Torch Lady or the Dreamworks kid fishing on the
crescent moon.

http://www.neatorama.com/2008/12/03/the ... dio-logos/

Maybe animating the sketch of the Wise Beard Man logo created by
Anonymous with the words: "His words are wise" flying in underneath
the image from the distance and growing big and flying off the screen,
followed by "His face is beard" then followed by "Wise Beard Man"
flying in and stopping under the fully sketched image. Then the W B
and M emerge from the "Wise Beard Man", growing large and supplanting
the "Wise Beard Man" forming the company name of WBM, like MGM.

Something like that. Of course that may suck. Can you think of
someway that might work or some other variation on it?

AngryGayPope@aol.com
Wow that's a long time. Most of those logos last less than four seconds.

Mark Bunker
to AngryGayPope
Any ideas for a short one?
And that was the last I heard from you. The WBM was a suggestion and I was open to any other idea but you never got back to me. As you can see, I never said "I can't think where I would need 3d animation in my project." Had we done the logo and the Big Blue animation then it is likely I would have used you for more because the film does uses a lot of graphics. I was open to paying you the $500 you asked for even though the Big Blue animation was something I thought I was unlikely to use. Had you said I have a drone and I can shoot some drone footage starting at street level and going over the top of Big Blue I would have leapt at that in a heartbeat. I did, after all, spend money to get helicopter footage of Gold but I wasn't sure I could count on your CG image to be usable. Even with that, I was willing to pay you and give you a shot but you dropped the ball.

I encourage anyone who enjoys AGP's brand of protesting to donate to him. It is not my cup of tea but I know he has a following. I'm here in Clearwater but I'm not here to taunt Scientologists on the street. That's never been what I do. I don't post many videos because so many other people have taken up the charge like Karen De La Carriere and Chris Shelton but I have been able to contribute things like the Paulette Cooper/Tony Ortega book event and the Q&A following Going Clear. I hope those have been useful and if you liked seeing the bird on my car, then that's just a little bonus. There was a time early on when I think I was the single source for video about Scientology on the web, taping every TV and radio broadcast, taping and editing pickets, etc. Now there's a flood of material from all corners of the world. If Scientology is collapsing, it is from the collective actions of everybody who has ever contributed to informing the public, including actions such as yours with which I don't necessarily agree.

Hi, Mark! Looking forward to your movie. I think it would be extremely interesting if you incorporated some of your old footage of bullbaiting by the Scientologists from way back when. In my opinion that is by far the weirdest stuff about Scientologists that has ever been captured on film. These days there might be someone standing there videotaping the news reporters or documentary filmmakers, but it doesn't compare to Mary DeMoss, Dan Murnan, or some of the others back in the old days. Is it possible to use the footage, or would the participants have to approve?

I think it's great that you will post the footage from the interviews online once the movie is done.

Also, I think there's plenty of room left to explore Scientology with a different set of eyes.
