This thread reminds me of the "casting" we all did when the Jack Parson's film project was being discussed (it was then that I nominated Danny B)

How about Linda Hunt for the role of David Miscaviage then?

I also nominate Donald Rumsfeld for the role of Heber Jentzsch.

I think the best screenplay would be adapted from that book.

Also, I'm going to reiterate my PSH vote for Hubbard.

Your list is becoming biased against short guys. If you start eliminating guys next becasue they are bald, I'm gonna sue! Hey, Helen...we got work to do!

I'm not that tall. I'm getting more than 64 nominations, and I'm trying to trim them down. Everyone I cut out had other reasons, either too old (Borgnine) too lightweight (Bonnaduce) or didn't resemble Hubbard (Macy).
I see two other ways to trim down:
(1) Eliminate all the comedians who have never done serious roles. That would make other people mad.
(2) Knock off actors I don't like, personally. That's unfair.

With 64 names the survey can be fun, pitting one actor against another to move to the next round. With 69 names, or 80 names, the vote might have to be a simple who-gets-the-most, with maybe a run-off among the top five. And, if you have unsuitable people who wouldn't portray LRH well, you get criticized for THAT.

Well, I've been noting that some people believe that if you do anything, it should be a serious piece. I've thought about it and I definitely think that if any movie, theatre piece, etc. is done on scientology it should definitely be broad comedy and parody. That's all I need is someone portraying Blubbard in a way that somehow brings out the buried 'human-ness' of Ron; the unfortunate episodes that made him what he was and yet beneath it all he had a decent quality, yadda, yadda, yadda. I can watch 'The Godfather' if I want to see a killer humanized. For me, it just has to be William Shatner. I still like David Spade for the midget. And Randy Quaid can be Capt. Bill.

Ron: (on his Sea Org boat): "Bill, come 'ere. Look at this - a speck of dust in my soup. Davey..get the cook!"
(cook arrives)
Cook: "Yes, Commander"
Ron: "It's Commodore you idiot. Do I look like Russell Crowe?"
Cook: "No sir!"
Ron: "There's a f...kin piece of dust in my soup!!"
Cook (looking): Actually that's a fly Commodore"
Ron: "Davey, throw this a..hole overboard!"
Davey: "We're in drydock sir"
Ron: "All the better. Bill, call my on-call messenger. I need to take a piss and someone has to open my belt"
Bill: "Do you want the messenger to unzip you too?"
Ron: "No, that's Davey's job you bithering idiot!"

Well, what do you want on short notice.

Last call for nominations for actor to play LRH. The list so far is on page 2 of this thread.

Elmer Fudd

Davey: "Ah....what's up, Doc?"
Ron: "Get my wifle. We're gonna hunt for wabbits today- hu..hu..hu.hu"
Davey: "Don't you mean squirrels?"

Leave Bud from Married with children out of this...but maybe the actress who played Marcy could be DM. Ed Oneill could be lafayette, yeah like Al Bundy would play anybody named lafayette! Buck could play xenu.

DC,

I think Rip Torn deserves to be on the list even though he couldn't play a young Ron.

Ed O'Neill looks more like Blubbard and less like Al Bundy these days, and has performed well in serious roles. But I have to bump someone to make room for him. Let's forget about height, now - and think of who is LEAST believable. Will Ferrell? Brad Pitt?

Feedback, please.

I compiled a list of about (10) I found completely unacceptable IMO.

I'll give you the most...

Ozzy Osborne.

No way, it appears to me, he could speak as a slick mid-century American conman. He can barely speak as himself IMO.

I am a fan though. ;)

FWIW, ...Brad Pitt was on the list also.

My two bits.

Hey, Donny C:

How about the GREAT Aussie actor Geoffery Rush?

He's jowly and homely, but really intense. He could disappear into the role of LRH.

Regards,

Natty

...so far and no "slam-fest" on my "diss'ing" Ozzy

Crazy Train is a true classic, I love hearing it.

NattyP I wasn't too versed in your "nomination" so I did a quick dip.

I think he could very well be it, ...I mean Hubbard.

Along with an impressive career, mostly on stage, I think he could bring even his own personal life experience to the script.

Seriously I can see Rush in the part way before over half the others.

Geoffery Rush is an outstanding actor no question. That guy could probably portray Mae West if he wanted to. Blubbard would be a walk in the park for him.
