If you try to alter the hypnotic subjects perceptual awareness in order to bring about a crime, you would have the added problem of altering your own subjective behavior. In other words, to tell a subject that a revolver is loaded with blanks when you know it is loaded with bullet-carrying cartidges would call upon you to alter your behavior very greatly because you would know you could not ask him to point the gun at someone and pull the trigger. There would be an alteration in your own subjective behavior...

I agree fully, laboratory crimes and any other so-called "antisocial" behavior is possible when the perpetrators are in a competely protected situation and the entire performance is nothing more than make-believe. Such behavior does not require hypnosis; it can be used but is an unnecessary addition, but for real crime or genuine antisocial behavior, there has to be a knowledge of it and an intent. Such knowledge and intent bring forward self-protective behavior...


Mock Up, to make up; particularly mental imagery, but may also apply to physical things. Scientologists may often confuse external reality with imagination or fantasy, and may well not see the difference between imagining a wall, and taking a hammer and nails and building one. "Mock up a wall. Thank you. Now destroy that wall. Thank you."

Mock-up, noun. 1. *Mock-up* is derived from the World War II phrase which indicated a symbolized weapon or area of attack. Here, it means in essence, something which a person makes up himself. 2. A *mock-up* is more than a mental picture; it is a self-created object which exists as itself or symbolizes some object in the mest universe. It is a thing which one can be. 3. A full perceptic energy picture in three dimensions created by the thetan and having location in space and time. Now, that's the ideal definition. 4. We call a mental image picture a *mock-up* when it is created by the thetan or for the thetan and does not consist of a photograph of the physical universe. 5. The specific commands used in the Remedy of Havingness process (for adding mass) are remarkably similar to those used to induce positive hallucinations by hypnosis, while the "perfect duplication" process resembles the hypnotic induction of negative hallucination (not seeing what is actually there). For example:

The commands of Remedy of Havingness are as follows: "Mock up a (planet, man, brick). Make a copy of it. Make a copy of it. Make a copy of it." And when the preclear has from five to 15 copies, "Push them all together. Now pull them in on you ...." 49

STEP II - Have preclear mock-up own body. If he does this easily and clearly, have him mock-up own body until he slips out of it. When he is exteriorized and knows it thoroughly (the conditions of all exteriorization) do STEP I. If his mock-up was not clear, go to STEP III immediately.

Wow! - Makes me seque off topic a bit. That movie was on danish TV not long after it was made. The topic of the movie ensures that danish television would put it on. We really don't like Nazism in this country, and the mystery of how it could happen is one we share.

I happened to see it... I went: 'Wow! - That was the game!'

At the time I was still not out of my own $cientology funk. I had been out for many years, wanted nothing to do with $cientology. But I still considered myself to be wrong. That movie actually made me start thinking I probably wasn't wrong at all.

I'm convinced that it is $cientology depicted in the movie! - That $cientology is not mentioned is for 'protection' - That Nazism dovetails so smugly into the Cof$ operation is a revelation!

Imaginary Skill and Ability

The constant dwelling of the mind upon any one subject is very apt to produce a concentration of thought that results in self-hypnotism. Some persons invent wonderful tales of what occurred to them on hunting or fishing expeditions and repeat their stories over and over again so frequently that they finally believe in their truthfulness, although in reality knowing they are mere fabrications.

A certain gentlemen of liberal income, obtained through questionable methods, became possessed of the idea that he would like to become famous as an author. He could not write an ordinary letter correctly and no knowledge whatever of the subjects upon which he desired others to think him an authority.

He thereupon paid gentlemen of literary attainments a meager sum for writing books for him. These books he had printed with his own name upon the title page as author. They met with an ready sale and he was frequently quoted by various writers who had never met him, and who were not acquainted with the facts. His acquaintances, however, quickly realized his bogus authorship and took delight in carrying on conversations with him upon various topics treated in his books, laughing to themselves at his crude opinions that were such variance with those printed under his name.

But the constant reference to him as an author impressed itself deeply upon his mind, until he grew to actually experience a "realizing sense" of his ability, and finally became convinced that he had exhausted his nervous system by too much brain work extended in writing his books.

He would expatiate upon his many months of arduous literary labor in the midst of business, and do it with such sincerity that friends began to realize that he labored under a mental delusion. He had simply hypnotized himself, and as there is no counteracting influence, his condition will probably remain unchanged until someone rudely awakens him to the fact that his bogus authorship is generally known, and that he has long been a "laughing stock" to many on account of it.

Such incidents in various lines are common. A manufacturer, who had secured over a thousand patents on contrivances devised by his employees, became convinced that he was one of the greatest inventors of the age and was made an officer in the Society of Inventors, although the only work he had ever done in that line was to invent methods of securing, without remuneration, the results of the genius of his employees.

This book is interesting for more reasons than the quote below.

1st, It was first published in 1948

The page styles, typeface, line spacing and chapter break styles are the same as dianetics. Strikingly so..... I now believe that upon his desk that held Hubbard's typewriter, he had this book and a copy of William Sargant's manuscript of his 1955 publication date "Battle for the MIND". Circumstancial proof of my manuscript theory, is supported by Hubbard's Dianetics touching upon the all the same ideas, with many inverted, as the first half of Psychiatrist William Sargants book! ~ the part writtern prior to 1950!

2nd In the 1954 reprint is contained this update of L Ron Hubbard's Dianetics:

A third form of age regression has recently been publicized. In 1950 L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer, published Dianetics,3 a book which aroused considerable public interest, though it was coldly received and ignored by the medical and psychological professions. In his therapy, Hubbard uses a form of regression which

he labels "return." Although he denies that hypnosis is involved, this is definitely a hypnotic technique. It seems to be a form of regression between the two types previously described. The subject relives an experience with great vividness and may have perception with all five senses. Some regressed behavior may be betrayed. But he is in both the present and the past. He speaks in the present tense, though he may comment about and analyze the experience he is describing as if also in the present time. His speech is normal to his real age.

Dianetic return can be obtained with surprising ease with most people. Only a very light trance state is needed. The regression is then obtained merely by directing the subject to go back in time to u particular age, date, or event. To facilitate this, frequent use is made of association to words.

While Hubbard has called attention to this form of regression, a good description of it was given by Freud 4 as long ago as 1892."

3rd - There is another technque described in this book, which in fact is a subset of the previously described confusion technique.

This method of advanced deep trance induction is called "The Multiple-Dissociation Technique", and, it mixed with nazi occultic symbols

Human memory consists primarily of four factors: similation, retention, recollection and recognition. Unless an experience is assimilated, it will not be retained. Evidently there is sort of of a mental filing system for the process of retention, because a memory leaves the consciousness and seemingly is forgotten until the need to recall makes it desirable for that memory to be brought forth again into consciousness. All strong memories and experiences are assimilated and probably retained, but most of them are never recalled for lack of need. Under hypnosis, memories completely forgotten in the waking state and not subject to conscious recall can be brought out of the subconscious filing cabinet. Pending recall, what becomes of these memories?

Psychologists have various terms for the subconscious such as "unconscious," "subjective," "superconscious," "subliminal" and others. Regardless of terms there is an area of the mind which differs from that which we use consciously. Someone has compared the mind to an iceberg floating in the sea with the conscious mind or awareness above the water line, the greater bulk being below and ordinarily unreachable. We term this submerged portion the subconscious. It controls the various functions of the body outside of consciousness, all the semi-voluntary and involuntary actions of the organs, glands and muscles. The autonomic nervous system is the vehicle through which it acts. Memory is a part of the subconscious, Rivers (46) having termed it the "storehouse of memory." Hypnotism provides a means of reaching the subconscious, as we shall learn when considering theory.



Stage hypnotists make frequent use of halluciniations. illusions and delusions in their entertaiment. A delusion is a persistent error of perception due to a false belief, commonly about things which are themselves real, while an illusion is a perception which fails to give the true character of an object perceived, a false impression. An illusion is closely related to a hallucination, but the latter differs in that it has no external source or object and is an imaginary perception, while the illusion is of an objective reality. All may occur in connection with any of the five senses, and may be either positive or negative. Stage technique always involves the suggestion of bizarre hallucinations, and the audience rocks with laughter when some dignified gentleman plays the clown while under hypnotic inducement.


It is easy to think of hallucinations which will be amusing to onlookers but inoffensive to the subject, and such suggestions are more likely to be carried out. Normally noone enjoys being made to appear foolish, and the ooerator must remember that the subject is not a lump of clay but a conscious human being who undoubtedly will resent being forced to perform a repugnant or disagreeable act. He deserves the same treatment he would receive if awake. When the operator plans to invoke hallucinations, it is best to ask prior permission and never to experiment without the subjects approval. Mild hallucinations are quite possible with only a moderate degree of hypnosis; when the more fantastic ones are seen, we can be sure a deep state has been reached.

An interesting example of negative visual hallucination is the suggestion that a spectator has left the room. The subject is to opsn his eyes, notice the absence of this person, and comment on it. This will be carried out, with blank gaze at the "absentee" who may be sitting directly in front of him. If addressed by the invisible one, no attention will be paid, and if asked to sit in the chair occupied by him, the subject will express astonishment and be much puzzled at finding himself on an invisible lap.

One of the few dangers in hypnotism is neglect on the part of the operator to remove any hallucination, delusion or illusion before dismissing the subject, and there must be no "amnesia" on this point by the hypnotist. This is especially important when a number of people have been hypnotized and hallucinated, for the hypnotist making such a mistake, the awakened subject believing a black dog was following him as had been suggested on the stage. The victim was thought ready for the asylum until a physician learned the cause of the unwanted canine presence. It was unnecessary to call in another hypnotist to remove the hallucination.

The Case of Marguerite M'Alister

Miss Marguerite McAlister, of Chicago, for years
had a great reputation for being a most successful
nurse, and commanded the highest salary for her
services. She was often spoken of as a woman who
had a peculiarly soothing influence over patients. She
privately informed me that her success lay almost
altogether in her hypnotic ability which she had dis-
covered by accident in a peculiar manner, and she
had kept her secret to herself, lest persons might
object to her on account of it.

At one time she had for a patient a very sensitive
and irritable young woman suffering from a broken
leg. This caused her to worry greatly about her
work, she being a school teacher and fearful lest she
should lose her position. The worry caused loss of
sleep for several nights and threatened to bring on
brain fever from insomnia and exhaustion. Miss
McAlister tells the story in these words:

"My patient was a devout Catholic, and one night
after every effort to quiet her and induce natural
sleep had failed, I suddenly decided to try to affect
her through her faith in religion. I picked up a little
crucifix and fastened it to the bed post at the foot
of the bed and told her to look at it steadily for ten
minutes and to think of nothing but that her Savior
would allow her to go to sleep. I kept my watch in
my hand to notice when the ten minutes should be
up. She kept her eyes on the crucifix steadily
throughout the whole time and at the end of ten
minutes I said: `Now, shut your eyes and you'll go
to sleep.' I no sooner said it than her eyes closed
tightly and she slept soundly all night. I had no
thought of hypnotizing her when I commenced, but I
soon realized what had been done, for I had read a
great deal on the subject. The next night I repeated
the experiment and when the ten minutes of looking
at the crucifix had expired I said: `Now, you are
going to sleep, and after this, every night that you
look at the crucifix this way you will have a good
night's rest,' and so she did."

Miss McAlister said that when she had Catholics
for patients she always used the crucifix in this way
when they were sleepless, and it always brought
about the desired effect. With others, she would
call their attention to some object for the required
space of time, telling them that such a plan had
always brought sleep to restless persons she had
nursed, and sleep was sure to follow under the combined
influence of their steady gaze and her emphatic
assurance and her hypnotic influence, which she
cultivated with much earnestness, taking pains to keep
all thoughts of hypnotism from her patrons, lest
prejudice might injure her reputation as a successful
nurse. Happily such prejudice is fast giving away
to public approval of such methods.

I believe this is a thread that deserves to be kept on page 1. It doesn't reveal why Hubbard did what he did, it reveals how Hubbard did what he did. We can take our time figuring out why he did it.

Hypnotic "Patter"

A hypnotic "patter" may be likened to a brick wall. A smooth face of flowing suggestions is presented to the subject, but this face is actually composed of "bricks" of specific and motivating suggestions bonded together with a mortar of generalized "stock phrases" which tend to deepen the trance.

When puzzled as to the next step of the procedure, the hypnotist covers his indecision by filling in with these stock phrases. As he utters them mechanically, he is considering the situation and selecting the next step in an unhurried manner. As soon as he he has decided on a specific suggestion, he can make the transition from the stock phrase to the
suggestion without the subject ever suspecting that there has been indecision.

The use of stock phrases explains the appearance of self-possession of the skilled hypnotist. He seems always to know what to say next, but only the untutored spectator is taken in.

The foregoing does not mean that an unbroken flow of conversation must always be kept up by the hypnotist. Before a period of silence, however, the subject should be given, either directly or indirectly, an understanding that when the hypnotist stops talking he does so deliberately rather than because he "doesn't know what to say next." For instance, the hypnotist might say, "Continue to relax more and more," or "Keep going deeper and deeper into sleep."

THE SENSE OF TOUCH.

Many persons can be directly hypnotized by the
sense of touch, without suggestion or the employ-
ment of any other means, and when a subject has
been frequently brought under control it will not be
difficult to hypnotize him by ommitting the concentra-
tion of thought by means of an object of some kind
and also by omitting the monotonous and continuous
suggestions. Merely touching a subject of this kind
will often suffice to throw him into a condition of
hypnosis. Still, with an operator with whom he is
not acquainted he may prove a most obstinate subject
and require the employment of the most impressive
methods before he can be influenced.

The production of sleep through the sense of touch
is usually spoken of as mesmerism, so-called after
Frederick Anton Mesmer, who employed this method
(1775) in his experiments that rendered his name
famous and laid the foundation for the study of
modem hypnotism. His method consisted largely in

making passes over the head, face and body, pro-
ducing what is known as "animal magnetism."

To mesmerize a subject, it is always necessary to
have him realize that you intend to put him to sleep
through the power of your personal magnetism. In
this, as in all other methods of hypnotism, you must
first secure the confidence of your subject in your
ability, and engender confidence in yourself that you
can and will accomplish what you desire.

It is a good plan to rub the fingers together before
commencing the operation. It begets a sort of
"nervousness" to the tips of the fingers that will
produce a tingling sensation when they touch the
subject's forehead. This sensation at once convinces
him that you are possessed of great magnetic powers.
Just how much actual magnetism is developed or
how much is necessary, has never been ascertained,
but as the expression is convenient, we will employ it.
