I was telling my psychologist friend about stats today.

The look on his face was priceless.

I'm not going into a long argument here. I did that elsewhere.

The thing about stats is that eventually and ineluctably your stats will crash and there's nothing you can do about it.

Hubbard designed this piece of 'tech' knowing that eventually everyone involved in the organization would reach a point where their stats would crash. Everyone includes every scientologist reading this. Even if you are a public person there is a big push to get you working as a volunteer with a stat and when you agree to that eventually your stat will crash.

When your stat crashes you will be put in lower conditions and experience all the brainwashing goodness those will be for you.

Thursday at two approaches.

How are your stats?

What are stats? I never got involved with the cult, so I don't know all of the gory details.

Stats are scientologys version of statistics. Every member has a stat and they are judged on their stats.

The "stats in scientology make no sense whatsoever. Let's say you take over a post that no one has held in time immemorial. There were no stats for this post. You get 3 people to come in to the org that 1st week. Next week you get 4! Next week you get 3. Now you are on a steep danger curve, and you get assigned conditions. You have to do amends for getting 10 people in to the org where before there was no one on your post.

Let's look at a letter registrar; letters out is their stat. They write 1000 letters one week, and are commended for a "highest ever". Next week, perhaps due to fatigue and carpal tunnel, they only send out 800 letters. Letter Reg is fail, and cops a lower condition.

The insanity just keeps magnifying in quantum leaps the higher up the Scientology Org board you go. (Or perhaps "the further down the rabbit hole you go")

I could give a thousand more examples, but I hope you get my point. The harder you try one week the harder you have to try the next week. Scientology operates on weekly statistics from Thursday at 2 until Thursday at 2. Nothing you ever did in the past matters after Thursday at 2.

Give them the title to grandmas farm and they will ask you for more after Thursday at 2.

There should be a page on this where I can send you. Until there is here goes, again. I'm going to make this real brief and leave out a lot of detail but you should get the basic horror show.

A person who becomes a scientologist will be recruited onto staff or will be recruited to be a volunteer and will certainly become a student at some point.

I'm going to talk as if you are a scientologist. This just makes it easier for me to tell this. It is not meant to insult you.

When you are a scientology staff member or volunteer you are assigned to a post. That's a job with a job title. A student is considered to be posted as a student so he/she has a post as well.

With your post you have a product and with your product you have a statistic or stat. Your stat is a numerical way for your production to be measured.

As an example of this let's post you as a ditch digger. Your product is ditches dug and your stat is number of cubic feet dug up. As you dig you will keep track of or measure how much you dig up in cubic feet. At the end of the day you will record that number on a piece of graph paper. At the end of the week you will total that up and put a dot on the graph paper with a number.

Let's say in your first week your stat is 70 cubic feet. You put a 70 on the graph. Groovy.

Now in your second week in scientology you are expected to produce more. If you produce the same or less that is bad. If you produce more that is good. If you produce more you are upstat. If you produce the same or less you are downstat.

So in week two you produce 71 cubic feet and everyone is happy. But you must produce more the following week. Every week you must produce more than the week before.

As long as you are upstat the horse shit going on around you is not so bad. As soon as you are downstat that horse shit will start sticking to you.

When you are downstat Mr. Ethics Officer will become interested in you. If you are downstat too often Mr. Ethics Officer will start to make your life miserable.

In scientology the policy is to punish downstats and reward upstats. Upstats rarely get rewarded though they do get permission to reward themselves. Downstats always get punished.

That's the simplified version. If you search around you will get more detail but I think the simplified version should have put an interesting expression on your face.

Oh, yeah. In scientology the end of the week when all the stats are totaled, recorded and reported happens at Thursday at 2 p.m. There's really no other feeling quite like that of being in the time frame of say noon to 2 with your stats down and knowing there's nothing you can do to get them up. Excuse me while I do a dramatic ending to this.

Thursday at 2 approaches.

How are your stats?

That's insane. That's just... insane. I don't see how they could possibly expect you to actually do that. What the fuck are they thinking?

After thinking about it for a while, I've thought of new reasons why it's stupid. Suppose that you're the best Scientologist in the world. You bring in more money, recruits, and such than any other Scientologist ever has. You can still be downstat. You probably will be. It doesn't matter that you're the best, you are expected to do better than it is possible to do. No matter what, stats will get you in the end no matter how good you are. It's like asking an A student to make better than an A. It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Very well put Paradox!

For the CO$ not to realize (and Hubbard who just didn't care, he only wanted results which equaled money) that this is the embodiment of Sisyphus's hell is ludicrous. No one in the universe could ever deal with all of the ever changing factors that from week to week will change what is possible to be done!

Just one of the near infinite amount of reasons this horror cult called the church of scientology must end!!!

You are absolutely correct Paradox. So here is what often happens in the scientology world: You learn that there are only so many hours in a day. Then you find out that you can produce so many widgets per hour. You learn that you must produce more widgets this week then you produced last week. You learn that your pay and "libs" (liberty=day off) depend on your stats (number of widgets produced) being higher than the week before. If you have a brain cell left in your cult addled head you will make sure that produce more widgets on your libs week than you do on your not libs week.

Unfortunatley for the sea ogre, LRH knew about this human foible. So IF your stats show a pattern (and it could be just one week) of being up on your libs week, and down on the weeks between, you will be sent to ethics!

This insane self-destructive policy works to our advantage. Anonymous has a stat-crashing programme designed to sabotage the performance of Scientologists assigned to counter criticism on internet message boards and comments pages. Can you guys advise on any other areas we may be able to effect?

Hubb knew exactly what he was doing when he constructed the whole shebang that goes along with 'stats.'

Stats are at the core of ethics, PTS/SP, conditions, and everything to do with being on staff or being a student or being a public person who has volunteered to help out. The public person who "volunteers" to help out is given a post, with stats.

Stats also determines the pay a staff member receives. If stats are down there are pay penalties.

As for rewards - let me retell the story of 10x (ten-eks). Hubb came up with these games. It started with 2x. The game was to double your stats over a period of time. Then it went on to 5x and finally 10x. There may have been a 3x but my brainwashed memory is blurred.

So in our 'org' miracle of miracles everyone on staff achieved 10x or better by the due date of the game. Every single staff member was upstat in one of the three upper conditions - not necessary to know about that right now - and every single staff member had made 10x.

Everyone gathered in the public area for a celebration muster (a kind of meeting where you get brainwashed some more). There was quite a bit of excitement. The gross income stat was known and everyone was excited about it being highest ever and everyone would get a bonus.

Then we were told the executive director had a special announcement. More anticipation. The executive director came into the space and made his announcement.

There would be no pay that week. The rent for the 'org' had been in arrears and after the 30% skim to Flag, the GO and the reserves the rest of the income would pay the rent and there would be no money for staff.

So in scientology punishment is certain; reward is not certain and usually it doesn't happen.

For those scientologists reading this - how were your stats?

There's only one stat that matters: years out.

I have to actually check when my last paid service was, but I'm pretty sure it's been 10 years. :D

In a word: Kafkaesque. It's like they want you to go insane and kill yourself. I'm still not sure how any of you survived a week in that place, much less decades.

Paradox, you may have read or heard the phrase, "scientology is worse than you think." One of the implications of this statement is that when you think you have seen in scientology what you perceive as the ultimate worst you will then see something worse than that.

In the 'PTS/SP' (potential trouble source/suppressive person) course, one is taught to recognize 'PTSness' and therefore connection to a suppressive person by a statistic graph that goes up and down like a 'rollie coaster' (sic). This is also described as a situation that betters and then worsens.

When Mr. Ethics Officer or an executive sees a graph that goes up and down over and over they interpret it that the person who owns the graph is PTS and connected to an SP.

While I was taking that course there were some people taking the Ethics and Justice Specialist Course. I estimate that they spent at least a third of their time on that course studying statistic graphs and interpreting them.

There were drills where they were shown graphs and had to instantly state the condition associated with the graph. I am simplifying this a bit because I don't want to get into some of the complexities associated with this.

Every staff member's graph is posted on a wall near their desk or in the vicinity where they work or in some cases near to where their senior has their desk. Each graph has the person's name on it and the name of their post.

The idea is that an executive or someone from HCO, the Hubbard Communications Office, division one, can see immediately the condition of any given staff member and the overall condition of an area. In a way this is like an open and ongoing knowledge report.

One thing you learn very quickly when you are in scientology is that in scientology there is no privacy. This is another feature of that organization that Hubbard built into it.

When I started this thread I wanted to taunt any lurking scientologists in the hope of getting them riled enough to take a walk. But I think, Paradox, your questions and comments have made it more instructive than that.

Stay tuned. I have further taunting planned.
