Hubbard As a Nuclear Physicist.

One of the many claims made by Hubbard about himself, and oft repeated by his followers, is that he is a nuclear physicist, and his boast is that he was even one of the first nuclear physicists who, in 1932, were studying on lines which finally led to the atomic bomb. He claims to be an authority on the atom bomb and on radiation and he has written a book to prove it. This book, All About Radiation, is in two parts. The first part, being entitled "The Facts about the Atomic Bomb" and written by "a medical doctor", deals with certain medical aspects of atom bomb damage and is written in temperate language and, within limits, is

reasonably accurate. The second part of the book is entitled, "Man's Inhumanity to Man", and Hubbard is its author. In the book he is described as "Dr. Hubbard" and as "A Nuclear Physicist".

The Board heard evidence from a highly qualified radiologist who has made a special study of radiation and its effects. He said that Hubbard's knowledge of radiation, as displayed by his writings in All About Radiation, was the "sort of knowledge that perhaps a boy who has read Intermediate Physics might, with a lot of misapprehensions and lack of understanding, demonstrate". One of Hubbard's assertions is that "a 16-foot wall cannot stop a gamma ray but a body, that is to say human, can". This witness said that this was a complete denial of physical truths and was a basic scientific fallacy which would lead to disastrous consequences in this community at this time if it were not resisted. He said that such a statement "shows complete and utter ignorance of physics, nuclear science and medicine". Speaking in general terms about Hubbard's contribution to All About Radiation which he described as "ravings and ramblings", the witness said:

"There is no attempt to present precise data or conclusions from precise data; no attempt to clearly present his views coherently and progressively in terms the reader can follow; colloquial and extraordinary terminology is used to confuse rather than enl ighten; the more basic fundamental established truths of science are ignored and replaced by imaginative fiction without a vestige of corroborative experiment designed to support such hypotheses."

In All About Radiation, Hubbard states that "the danger in the world today in my opinion is not the atomic radiation which may or may not be floating through the atmosphere but the hysteria occasioned by that question". This is in line with much of his teaching that most illnesses are caused by the mind, and he claims that man can be exposed to radiation and escape illness or damage, so long as no hysteria is associated with the event. This contention, the witness pointed out, is absolutely untrue and contrary to all authority on radiation which is uniformly of the view that damage done by radiation is quantitatively related to the magnitude of the physical dose received. "Radiation", writes Hubbard, "is more of a mental than a physical problem". This, said the witness, is completely false. Hubbard's ignorance and confusion of thought are further illustrated by his contention that sunburn is the same sort of burn as that caused by atomic radiation. This, of course, is not so, as the evidence made clear.

The witness gave many other examples as appearing in All About Radiation of Hubbard's lack of knowledge, misunderstanding and positively wrong views on matters of radiation and biology. It is unnecessary further to itemize instances of Hubbard's i gnorance on the subject of radiation except, perhaps, to refer to a formula which he claims to have evolved for a tonic called "dianazene", for which he claims almost magical powers. He wrote:

"Dianazene runs out radiation - or what appears to be radiation. It also proofs a person against radiation in some degree. It also turns on and runs out incipient cancer. I have seen it run out skin cancer. A man who didn't have much liability to skin cancer (only had a few moles) took Dianazene. His whole jaw turned into a raw mass of cancer. He kept on taking Dianazene and it disappeared after a while. I was looking at a case of cancer that might have happened."

This, said the witness, was "utter nonsense". Hubbard gave the formula for dianazene in the book, but there was, as the witness said, nothing remarkable about it; it was much the same sort of formula which is found in many proprietary medicines which are given for vague ill health, though the dosage in dianazene may be a little higher than is generally the case in such medicines. The fact that many Melbourne scientologists have taken dianazene is indicative of the degree of influence exercised by Hubbard over them.

One cannot but agree with the witness that it is a tragedy that anything so ridiculous should be inflicted on the general public.

From this witness's evidence it is apparent that Hubbard is completely incompetent to deal with the subject of radiation and that his knowledge of nuclear physics is distorted, inaccurate, mistaken and negligible. No evidence was called which disputed in any way these conclusions.

The dissemination of such nonsense as Hubbard has written in All About Radiation may well have dangerous consequences, for people reading and accepting it may develop a sense of false security or neglect or mistreat a condition which might otherwise respond to appropriate treatment.

The first science of mind to prove conclusively that physical illness can stem from mental disturbance, a fact which Freud held only as a theory, and only seldom demonstrated.

Dianetics is a sub-subject of Scientology and covers the anatomy of the mind rather than the brain. "Dia"—through; "nous"—mind.

In its early years Dianetics and Scientology, representing the severe viewpoint of the physical sciences, were considered highly controversial. Since that time many of its minor discoveries have been borrowed by the humanities.

A host of famous names have passed through Scientology clinics. But it is against association policy to reveal their identities just as the association protects their secrets.

The Code of a Scientologist, under which Scientologists practice, is the most severe ethical code known to physical or mental groups or practices. In addition to other points, a practitioner must return a patient's fees if therapy is not considered successful. Only an average of one case in all the thousands treated in any year over the whole world ever requests a return of fees and these are immediately refunded. A practitioner may be dismissed from the association and forbidden to practice if he violates any single part of the code.

Scientology erects no barriers to anyone by reason of religion or political affiliations; Scientology has no quarrel with the practitioners of other schools and its materials are always fully available to them, but they may not use them on patients unless the practitioner is also trained in Scientology. Medical and psychiatric degrees do not grant the right of practice of Scientology.

Scientology practitioners are called "auditors" —"one who listens and computes." Scientology auditors are available to service in any mental health activity in (country) on a paid or voluntary basis, but by association regulations, may not take staff posts in institutions which practice therapies such as electric shock which can physically harm patients.

Scientologists do not use drugs or hypnotism. They employ only their exact knowledge of the human mind.

The fullest results of Scientology are available in (city).

Scientology Central Organizations exist on every continent and centers exist in most large cities. The principal Scientology organization in the world is the Hubbard Association of Scientologists International. The "HASI" in (city) controls all Scientology in (country). It is located at (address).

THE STATE OF RELEASE

The purpose of Scientology is to make the able more able.

There are several grades of ability in Scientology. The first of these is the general state of the unprocessed human being, or "the average person."

The first level above this is that of "Scientology Release."

A Release is precisely defined as one who has no psychotic or neurotic tendencies of any kind and has a certainty that he will get no worse.

Technically, a Release is one whose graph has been raised by processing and whose IQ has been improved.

This is done by Scientology processing obtainable from the Hubbard Guidance Center or from the "HAS Co-audit" (Do It Yourself Processing).

It is a wonderful thing to be able to attain the status of a "Release." For one is now more cause over life and is less the effect of his environment.

Far above "Release" are other states of being such as "Clear." However, this is a goal much more distant. One's first target is a "Scientology Release." Now one has a happier future, is luckier and more able to cope with life.

A "Release" certificate is issued without charge by the Hubbard Guidance Center or the PE Foundation to anyone whose test clearly demonstrates that he or she has attained this state.

OSA doesn't want CoS members to engage in unsupervised and uncoordinated public defense of scientology (media interviews, letters to the editor, or OCMB postings). OSA doesn't want CoS members to mess things up - that's what OSA is for!

You have made a fascinating point, Probity. OSA took over the Guardian's Office function, and back in the days of the Guardian's Office, absolutely no Scientologist was permitted to do what SuzanneMarie is doing here: engage in a public defense campaign in the media without very strict Guardian supervision. (Today the internet would be defined as media, especially well-known sites like OCMB). For a Scientologist to do so was considered to be "bypassing" the Guardian's Office, and thereby putting the Guardian's Office into a condition of "Danger." I am sure the same analysis would be applied today to OSA.

SuzanneMarie, who posts here as a 10-year off-lines Scientologist who is also a PTS, is bypassing OSA by publicly defending Scientology in this media, and so she places OSA into a danger condition, which would be deemed an endangerment of Scientology--a suppressive act. I respect SM in many ways, but I do not understand why someone who so passionately defends Scientology would at the same time engage in acts that would be deemed an endangerment to Scientology.

I started watching that video today--at least I think it was the same one--but I couldn't finish watching it because it was so ridiculous.
While I was attempting to watch, it crossed my mind that it would make a good thread, so it was funny to find this thread already going on just a few minutes after shutting that window.

One thing I noticed, before I became too nauseated to continue watching, was that the church mentioned that LRH attended George Washington University. They tried to make it sound like he jumped right in & started researching his butt off & making great discoveries using all of the new mathematical tools at his disposal, yet they failed to brag about his report card.
Perhaps I cut it off too soon, but I didn't see the photograph of LRH in his cap & gown graduating at the top of his class.
I mean, surely he did graduate with honors because he was a relentless researching machine with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, who would leave no scientific stone unturned to get to the absolute, irrefutable truth, right?...right?...

I do not consider that CoS has committed serious crimes against the government. Copying documents related to government plans to destroy CoS is only tangentially criminal, since what the government was doing was far worse than the CoS response. Was the charge 'conspiracy to steal copy paper' or something?

The only accurate statement here and I'm using "accurate" instead of "honest" is that yes, Hubbard did attend GWU, but you won't see a picture of him in a cap and gown because he didn't graduate. His worst and failing grades were in physics and other science courses necessary to attain a degree in nuclear physics. That didn't stop him from lying about it as he did everything else and promoting himself as a physicist at the very top of the field.

The Cult of Scientology has worked very hard over the years deciding just who L. Ron Hubbard was. The Cult hired the esteemed professional writer and researcher Omar Garrison in the 1970's to do the official LRH bio. Garrison was given full access to the LRH archives and a young assistant named Gerry Armstrong. When Garrison realized that CoS' bio of LRH was largely a sham, he eventually took a payoff from the Cult and turned over his LRH bio in exchange. The Garrison LRH bio remains secret to this day, probably locked in David Miscavige's safe. Garrison was later interviewed on 60 Minutes by Mike Wallace. In that interview, Omar Garrison was unsparing in his description about how Hubbard's biography was largely a fraud. Omar Garrison would later file an affidavit on behalf of Gerry Armstrong regarding the LRH bio project:

Gerry Armstrong worked on LRH's biography after Garrison left the project. Armstrong would later call LRH's bio "utter bullshit" in his YT video (op cit). When it became clear to Scientlogy insiders that LRH had never offered his own "church" an honest biography, his followers were duty bound to somehow make Hubbard's bio work -- even it meant paying Omar Garrison over $1000,000 to not publish the LRH bio he had written. Armstrong credits Garrison with helping him to get out of Scientology.

Among Scientology's weakest points are the many documented lies in LRH's biography. The Cult has tried to explain or excuse these many lies. However, all of the Cult's efforts have failed. Thus, the Cult has had to simply purge LRHs' lies and move on in hopes that the public will not notice. This is pure denial on Scientology's part given the internet.

Hubbard's biographical lies have been among the key reasons that the Cult of Scientology has been repudiated by Western Culture and impeached of its "religious" status by the public at large. Hubbard's lies have allowed a great deal of humor to emerge at Scientology's expense.

I have a 1935 magazine piece that LRH wrote about himself. At some point, Scientology was publishing a lot of old pre-Scientology LRH stuff on its websites. What Hubbard wrote about himself in this 1935 piece utterly contradicts what he later said about his time spent in Asia.
