Booklet "Scientology and the Bible" and its authors

Post by Stefano B » Sat Oct 03, 2015 5:56 pm

Hi,

I was wondering whether anybody can help me to gather information about a curious booklet entitled “Scientology and the Bible” that I already have in my hands.

It dates back to 1967 and the sub-title reads: "A manifest paralleling the discoveries of Scientology by L Ron Hubbard with the Holy Scriptures."

The authors are:

Catherine Briggs
Colin Chalmers
Margaret Chalmers
Doreen Elton
Gladys Goodyer
Catherine Steele
Dorothy Penberthy.

It is dedicated to Katie Steele (supposedly the Catherine Steele listed among the authors) who "left her body" on August 8, 1966. She was "killed by medical doctors administering an incorrect drug in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1966."

I am trying to reconstruct the circumstances in which this booklet was produced. It seems rather anomalous, being it a piece of Scientology’s theology not authored by LRH.

Thanks.

The book was published in East Grinstead in 1967, says http://www.solitarytrees.net/pubs/li-fren.htm
Book sells for ridiculous price of $79.99 at Amazon.com, http://www.amazon.com/Scientology-Bible ... e+Bible%3A

I see - but they are not very informative as far as the people mentioned are concerned....

Google each
"person's name" + "Scientology" and
"person's name" + "Sea Org"
and look for clues like spouses, careers, places and dates. http://www.familysearch.org , a free genealogy search, may locate them in addresses like Saint Hill in Sussex, Flag in Clearwater, or Sea Org buildings in Los Angeles or Gold Base or Australia. Your local library may have a subscription to Ancestry.com which can do more searches. You might get not only their old addresses, but also date or year of birth, marriage, or death. If you find a spouse, do the same for the spouse which may lead to more clues. There may be multiple people with the same name, so use process of elimination (like a noted psychiatrist, Catholic priest, or four-star army general might NOT be the one).

Google
"person's name" and "Clearwater"
"person's spouse's name" and "Clearwater"
or whatever location you find them in. This will likely lead you to whitepages, Intelius, and other personal searches for them and their spouses.

You're welcome. Look for Colin Chalmers first, since many 1960's Scientology women changed their name when married. Look for proof that Margaret Chalmers is married to Colin. That gives you a solid pair to hunt for. Then search for the other women in familysearch for marriages. A lot of the early enthusiasts moved to Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida and married there; familysearch has some records for Pinellas County. Ancestry.com, for non-subscribers, has partial Florida marriage records to "tease" you into subscribing, but sometimes you can uncover the spouses name by poking around there for free. Just go to Ancestry.com and plop the names into the search boxes.

Look for the women in their married name and maiden name in the same city you found the Chalmers.

That book is a violation of Scientology policy. There is a policy in which L. Ron Hubbard does not allow anyone in Scientology to use their own byline
in Scientology publications unless they have first earned it by being published in many well established publications first. Having met that qualification
the next step to get a byline in a Scientology publication would be, presumably with the submission and acceptance of a CSW or completed staff work.

I doubt that the seven individuals listed would qualify for a byline in a Scientology publication. Per this thread they are pretty much unknown so it is
very likely they have not been published in a variety of non Sciengtology publications.

I see. So how do we explain its circulation?
Perhaps LRH might have made an exception? The Katie Steele case must have been something serious justifying a decision of that kind. After all there were policies but there were also his orders. The copy I have (photocopied) comes from a Scientology centre.

Hubbard could ignore his own rules. He may have assigned the project to those individuals and given them bylines.

For some time now, under David Miscavige, Scientology book stores only stock books and publications written by L. Ron Hubbard. From doing a Google
search for Ruth Minshull this happened around 1980. Ruth Minshull had written books about Scientology that had been sold in Scientology book stores
with Hubbard's approval for years. There's more on her here.

There was one other person who had their books selling in Scientology book stores but I do not remember his name nor any of his book titles.

Familysearch has
Name Dorothy G Penberthy
Event Type Marriage Registration
Registration Quarter Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration Year 1978
Event Place Crawley, Sussex, England
Spouse Name Thomas B Minchin
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVX7-XPZV

Googling "Minchin" + "Scientology" gave many hits, including the" Church's Australian vice-president, the Reverend T. B. Minchin" fighting for religious status in 1972, at http://www.suburbia.net/~fun/scn/presst ... 0829AU.HTM

There are a lot of Dorthy Minchin names in Australia and the UK. The trail gets harder after this.

Doreen Elsie Elton died in Melbourne, in 1987, same city as "Katie Steele" so that might be the same one. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JVKR-TQS

Colin Chalmers was an early Clear in Melbourne, Australia, but like the others, disappears from Scientology news reports after this book. I agree that nobody is supposed to be an official writer in Scientology except L. Ron. Hubbard or HIS ghostwriters. They likely got criticized and quit or were expelled. They would likely be at least in their seventies, now, if they are still alive.

Anybody from the old days in Melbourne or East Grinstead, speak up!
