The Dwindling Spiral of Scientologists at the Oscars, 1971-2017

Post by Don Carlo » Thu Feb 18, 2016 10:24 pm

Scientologists are getting rarer and rarer at the Oscars. Those then in Scientology in red; Those who had quit are in blue. Notice the many red names in early years, and the blue names (mainly Nicole Kidman) in more recent years. What a PR loss for Scientology after they pushed Cruise to divorce Nicole, and after Cruise stopped sitting in the audience, and avoided the red carpet. A regular on-stage celeb was John Travolta, but after his 2014 and 2015 mistakes, his presenter days may be over. Cruise presents because of his Mission Impossible success, but is mocked for his plastic surgery. If this trend continues, someday there will be no Scientologists at the Oscars.

I wrote with a question mark that Tom Cruise "kept (?)" his girlfriend or wife away, because maybe Penélope Cruz and Katie Holmes wanted to stay away from the Oscars EVERY SINGLE YEAR that they were his girlfriend or wife, but I doubt it. It's valuable PR for actors and actresses to attend and look magnificent. I believe, but can't prove, that Cruise pressured Cruz and then Holmes to not attend with him, the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmies. He did take them to his premieres and other events, so it's a puzzle. Cruise taking Holmes to the Vanity Fair post-Oscar party is a glamorous outing, but that party only gets limited photo-ops. It is not watched by 40 million people like the Oscars. John Travolta always brings his wife Kelly Preston, so why not Tom Cruise?

2017 No Scientologist nominees or presenters. Ex-Scientologist Nicole Kidman nominated for Supporting Actress, in Lion.

2016: No nominations or presenters. Never-was-a-Scientologist Sophia Vergara will present. Vergara briefly dated Cruise and dumped him supposedly because of the Scientology. Cruise and Vergara dating in 2005 prior to the Katie Holmes romance:

2015: John Travolta presented and inappropriately grabbed Idina Menzel and Scarlett Johannesen. EX Nicole Kidman presented.

2014: Travolta presented and flubbed Idina Menzel's name. EX Penélope Cruz presented.

2013: Travolta and EX Nicole Kidman presented. The Master, about an LRH-type cult founder, got 3 nominations. Katie attended the 2013 Golden Globes, making up for the many Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmies she missed while with Cruise: Image

2012: EX Penelope Cruz presented. Tom Cruise presented, and was in pre-recorded skit. He was not in the audience, and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away. The pair attended the 2012 post-Oscars Vanity Fair party. Months later, Katie left Cruise, to save her daughter from Scientology.

2011: EX Nicole Kidman nominated for Best Actress for Rabbit Hole, and Kidman also presented. Cruise didn't attend and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away.

2010: Travolta presented. Cruise didn't attend and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away. EX Penélope Cruz nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Nine.

2009: EX Nicole Kidman presented. Cruise didn't attend and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away.

2008: EX Nicole Kidman and Travolta presented. Cruise didn't attend and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away. EX Penélope Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

2007: EX Nicole Kidman and Travolta presented. Tom Cruise presented but didn't sit in the audience and kept (?) wife Katie Holmes away. EX Penélope Cruz nominated for Best Actress in Volver. Holmes raised eyebrows with her demure manner on the red carpet at the (2007) Vanity Fair Oscar party. Upon arriving at the famed afterparty, Cruise urged his bride to pose for a photograph alone.
"Take a shot of her," he told photographers.
But according to an onlooker, the 28-year-old actress refused to take a picture without him.
The actor then led Holmes around by the hand, pulling her back and forth while he mingled and she remained silent.
Cruise, 44, greeted a few photographers but didn’t introduce his wife, who said nothing and stood next to her husband, waiting for him to finish his conversations.
He later asked her again to pose for a picture alone, and she finally agreed.
“She looks at him for direction,” the witness tells Us

2006: Then-Scientologist Paul Haggis, won Film Editing for Crash, which Haggis wrote and directed. Crash also won Best Picture. Haggis quit Scientology in 2009. EX Nicole Kidman presented. Katie Holmes and Cruise had started their relationship in mid-2005. Cruise didn't attend and kept away (?) girlfriend Katie Holmes, who was then pregnant, and about to enter a media frenzy with Suri's weird birth certificate and Suri not being seen even by friends, for months. See viewtopic.php?f=9&t=102121

2005: Then-Scientologist Paul Haggis nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, for Million Dollar Baby, which won Best Picture. Travolta presented. So did Cruise's radiant ex-girlfriend (who took Scientology courses but wouldn't commit) EX Penélope Cruz, now free to attend. Image
Cruise did not attend in 2005. CoS tried to match him with Nazanin Boniadi in 2004, and "auditioned" Scarlett Johansson, who fled from the Scientology-flavored matchmaking. He took Sophia Vergara to a pre-Oscar party in 2005,* but Vergara didn't get an Oscar date with Cruise. Oddly, Cruise was flirting with Penélope Cruz at the Vanity Fair post-Oscar party:
A butched-up-to-within-an-inch-of-his-life Tom Cruise races his motorcycle to the Vanity Fair party at Morton’s in jeans and a leather jacket, pounds down an In N Out Burger, and, presumably, high fives every dude in the party before talking to ex Penélope Cruz. … “I put the kids to bed. Someone called and said the party was rockin’,” said Cruise at the VF bash. Cruise: motorcycle, leather, butch, etc etc. This time, practically engages in sexual congress with Cruz before (presumably) setting out to find a mechanical bull to ride.

Cruise's relationship with Katie Holmes started around April 2005, months after the Oscars.

2004: Cruise, Travolta and EX Kidman presented. Cruise didn't sit in the audience, and may have broken up with Penelope Cruz, who didn't attend.

2003: EX Nicole Kidman won Best Actress as Virginia Wolfe in The Hours. Travolta presented. Cruise didn't attend and kept (?) girlfriend Penélope Cruz away.

2002: EX Nicole Kidman nominated for Best Actress for Moulin Rouge. Cruise and Travolta presented. Cruise did not sit in the audience and kept (?) girlfriend Penélope Cruz away.

2001: Travolta, Cruise and EX Kidman presented. (Penélope Cruz, the future Cruise girlfriend, attended happily, not knowing she would miss the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Oscars).
Cruise had left Nicole Kidman in Feb 2001. The March 2001 Oscars was the start of Cruise avoiding red carpets and not sitting in the audience . Cruise and Kidman at the January 2001 Golden Globes. Image

2000: Cruise nominated for Best Actor, Magnolia. Cruise TOOK then-wife Kidman this year and some earlier years. Red carpet fans screamed the loudest for them. Image

1999: Travolta presented.

1998: No Scientologist nominees or presenters.

1997: Cruise nominated for Best Actor, Jerry Maguire. Then-Scientologist Nicole Kidman presented.

1996: Travolta and then-Scientologist Nicole Kidman presented. Image Cruise attended with Kidman, even though he had no role on stage. This contrasts with the 2011 Emmys, when Katie Holmes went alone to present, without husband Cruise.

1995: Travolta nominated for Best Actor Pulp Fiction. Also, Travolta presented.

1994: Tom Cruise and then-Scientologist Nicole Kidman presented.

1993: Mark Isham, composer won Best Original Score for A River Runs Through It.

1984-1986: No Scientologist nominees or presenters.

1983: Travolta presented.

1982: Travolta presented.

1980-1981: No Scientologist nominees or presenters.

1979: Grease got "nominated for Best song, "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from Grease – sung by Travolta but composer was not a Scientologist.

1978: Travolta nominated for Best Actor, Saturday Night Fever. Travolta also presented. Travolta had joined Scientology in 1975, as did Anne Archer.

1974-1977 No Scientologist nominees or presenters.

1973: Butterflies are Free, directed by Milton Katselas, received many nominations, but not for Best Director. It won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Katselas joined Scientology in 1965 and attracted young actors into Scientology through his Beverly Hills Playhouse. Katselas was cruelly denounced by several CoS celebrities near his 2008 death.

1972: Karen Black presented.**

1971: Karen Black nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Five Easy Pieces.

* Source for Vergara story: Tom Cruise
gave Scientology leaders a wish list of women he would like to date. They included...the up-and-coming actress Sofia Vergara.

When Vergara got an invitation from Cruise’s friend Will Smith to attend a (2005) pre-Oscar party, she had no idea she was being set up. She was dazzled by Tom’s megawatt smile and amused by the blizzard of phone calls, flowers and chocolates that followed their first meeting.
It was not long before he casually suggested they head for Celebrity Centre...It soon became clear that she was being auditioned for the biggest role of her life — Mrs. Tom Cruise Mark III. It was made clear that if she took the part, she would have to renounce her Catholic faith and convert to Scientology.

When married, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman went repeatedly together to the Oscars and Golden Globes like a normal movie-star couple.
Right after they went to the Golden Globes in January 2001,Cruise left Kidman. Starting with the March 2001 Oscars, Cruise never took a girlfriend or wife to the Oscars or the Golden Globes again, and never sat in the audience alone. Although Holmes presented at the Emmys in 2011, Cruise didn't accompany his WIFE.

I bet Tom hasn't sat in the Oscars audience since 2000 because (1) there might be Scientology jokes and (2) he'd have to look at ex-wife Nicole Kidman, ex-girlfriend Penélope Cruz, or brief ex-girlfriend Sophia Vergara being presenters or nominees. EVERY YEAR since 2001, an "Ex" has been named or onstage. Plus, Nicole and Penélope have each WON, unlike Cruise. So when Cruise is a presenter, the little coward hides in the green room before going on stage, and then vanishes. He attended a Vanity Fair after-party with Holmes, but that's invitation-only and he could move about and leave when he wished. Look at the exes-on-stage since he dumped Nicole right before the 2001 Oscars:

2017: Nicole Kidman nominated for Supporting Actress, in Lion
2016: Ex-girlfriend (for a short time) Sophia Vergara will present.
2015: Nicole Kidman presented.
2014: Penélope Cruz presented.
2013: Nicole Kidman presented. The Master, about an LRH-type cult founder, got 3 nominations.
2012: Penélope Cruz presented.
2011: Nicole Kidman nominated for Best Actress for Rabbit Hole, and Kidman also presented.
2010: Penélope Cruz nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Nine.
2009: Nicole Kidman presented.
2008: Penélope Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Nicole Kidman presented.
2007: Penélope Cruz nominated for Best Actress in Volver. Nicole Kidman presented
2006: Nicole Kidman presented.
2005: Penélope Cruz presented.
2004: Nicole Kidman presented.
2003: Nicole Kidman won Best Actress as Virginia Wolfe in The Hours.
2002: Nicole Kidman nominated for Best Actress for Moulin Rouge.
2001: Nicole Kidman presented

WHY SCIENTOLOGISTS ARE DOOMED AT THE OSCARS

Cruise lost a lot of mojo. Why is Cruise not getting as many Oscar presenting roles as Travolta, who was last nominated in 1995?
1. Travolta showed up with wife Kelly Preston and mingled with the audience.
2. Travolta hasn't infuriated people. In contrast, Cruise infuriated Steven Spielberg by criticizing and harassing Spielberg's wife.
3. Travolta hasn't ranted like Tom Cruise did against Matt Lauer, Brooke Shields, etc.
4. Travolta has even-keel friendliness, unlike Tom Cruise's super-intense but uneven relationships.
5. Travolta is fully involved (yeah not perfectly) in his children's lives, unlike Cruise's long absence from Suri.
6. Travolta evokes nostaglia for Saturday Night Fever and Grease, especially with older women, but Cruise offended older women by criticizing new mom Brooke Shields.
7. Travola said yes to less-glamorous presenter roles, like for "Best Cinematography." Cruise with his box office successes may only say yes for the most prestigious presenter roles, like "Best Film. " The Academy can only give that honor to Tom every few years, for fairness.
8. Travolta is happy to share presenter moments. Tom doesn't do light banter well (or maybe hates to share the spotlight or wants short co-presenters), so he's typically alone on stage.
9. The Academy doesn't have to fuss to keep Travolta away from ex-girlfriends, ex-wives, or tall people.
10. Travolta may have said yes more often because he has more free time than Cruise.

Conclusion # 1: As soon as Cruise's box office success ends, so do his presenter invitations.

Travolta lost a lot of mojo. The Oscars need to invite young and-or minority actors to present. Aged 62, Travolta is neither, and his fake hair is distracting. Many recent Oscar nominees and winners are more deserving than Travolta to be presenters. Travolta may refuse to wear glasses on stage and may not be able to read the teleprompter or Oscar envelope - this is the likeliest explanation for flubbing Idina Menzel's name in 2014. Travolta offended women by grabbing Menzel's face and side-grabbing and surprise-smooching Scarlett Johansson the next year.

Conclusion # 2: Travolta's recent clumsiness may have finally ended his long presenter gig at the Oscars.

The only non-Travolta, non-Cruise, still-in-Scientology celebrities lost their mojo long ago. They were named at the Oscars decades ago:
Mark Isham, composer, nominated in 1993.
Juliette Lewis nominated in 1992.
Anne Archer nominated in 1988, presented in 1991.
(The late Karen Black nominated in 1971, presented in 1972.)

Conclusion # 3: Barring a miracle, the older non-Cruise, non-Travolta Scientologists won't be named at the Oscars in the future.

Young Scientologist actors never got the mojo. There haven't been potential superstar young Scientologist actors. Most are in television and would have a hard time breaking into film, or are doing smarmy minor roles like Giovanni Ribisi in Avatar.

Conclusion # 4: Once Cruise stops making big box office successes, Scientologists won't be named at the Oscars as presenters or nominees.

There is one actor involved in Scientology who can really act and that is Giovnni Ribisi. Unfortunately for him, as good as he is, he has been typecast as a supporting role actor. He is unlikely to be nominated because his acting credit usually falls below the single name slides and shows up later on in the crawl. Maybe that's intentional on his part to stay off David's radar.

Ribisi had an interesting and expressive face that jumped off the screen when he was young. But, he wasn't amazing enough to get an Oscar or Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor. At age 42 he's settled into middle-aged-jowly-but-expressive-guy. His biggest award* was one Emmy eleven years ago, as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, for the hire-a-lot-of-Scientologists show, My Name Is Earl.

Older actors appeal to oldsters like ME. But the all-important teen and twenties movie-going audience sees a 42 year old as a dinosaur.

Juliette Lewis' father actor and Scientologist Geoffrey Lewis (1935-2015) got snubbed at the In Memoriam segment (1). Juliette was photographed at the Vanity Fair after-party (2)

Scientologists either weren't at the pre-Oscars red carpet, or maybe minor Scientologist celebs walked the red carpet but were ignored by the media.

Do you think the film industry might be catching on to the boycott?

I don't know about you but person involved with Scientology in a major role = I don't see the movie = the film industry doesn't get my $10.
Multiply that by the guessed number of 10,000,000 exes doing the same thing.

By the way, I read Tom Cruise is on the short list to be in the upcoming Green Lantern Corps movie. I will see it if they don't put him in it. Otherwise - pass.
