(I think $cientology is attempting to attach, among the general public at large, the same kind of negative emotional response to the word, "apostate," as the word, "Nazi," has. Good luck with that.

Edit: The online definition for, "apostate," is, "A person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle." Per that definition, with regard to $cientology, I am an apostate. Debbie is not.)

Debbie Cook's new letter, to the Tampa Bay (St.Petersburg) Times:
Debbie Cook wrote:
My name is Debbie Cook. Your publication just wrote about my New Year's Eve email to some of our Scientologist friends — church insiders — and included the full text of the email.

Someone else turned around and sent this letter to thousands of Scientologists — news articles are reporting 12,000 — and from there, you published it and other media outlets sensationalized it further. My email was no doubt tough reading for outsiders, as it quoted liberally and invoked duties from our own church policies and organizations.

Such matters are of paramount interest to Scientologists, but of no interest to the general public. Unfortunately this left various media to seize upon certain points that might titillate a public without a real understanding of the church, while downplaying the main point, which is my love for Scientology and my passion for it as laid out in the pure principles and guidance from L. Ron Hubbard.

I am not trying to pick a fight with the Church, nor am I bitter, or blasting or any of the other things concocted by other media outlets. I am simply asking my friends to do their part, the part that Mr. Hubbard asked of all Scientologists, which is to make sure that they only follow the workable technology laid out in policy and bulletins written by Hubbard exactly as he wrote them. This is the responsibility every Scientologist has — to keep it unadulterated.

This is the very reason I didn't want this in the press. All you got wind of was some internal group pressure to keep things on the straight and narrow. It was clearly intended as a communication amongst Scientologists.

I have been a Scientologist for 36 years. My experience of meeting and working with Scientologists all over the world is that they are truly good-hearted, ethical and caring people.

The staff of Scientology organizations work very hard, long hours to service and help anyone who walks in their doors.

Scientology organizations provide services that help people with their problems and improve conditions in one's life. Whether that is drug addiction or alcohol abuse, marital problems, school problems, kid problems, work related stress or pretty much any of life's twists and turns.

In most cases the reason Scientologists donate to the Church or even dedicate their lives to working for the Church is because their lives have been truly touched and they have been profoundly helped through the application of technology laid out by Mr. Hubbard.

Scientologists are active in community service, with community clean-ups, Winter Wonderland, adopting streets, planting trees, working with the Fire Dept as emergency response. At pretty much any natural disaster anywhere in the world you will find Scientologists as Volunteer Ministers there on the scene helping in any way they can. These and many other incredibly good things that Scientologists are involved in are the reason we care so much.

This letter shows, at least to me, that Debbie is under tremendous pressure from CoS to make this scandal go away or at least lessen its impact on the Scientologists who live in Florida. I think that she is currently negotiating some kind of a deal with CoS that would keep her in good standing with the Church in exchange for several public statements from her that were prepared by the CoS officials.

Or, Debbie could be saying, "I'm still a good CoS member, since internal communication is okay, that's the only communication I did, and I asked it not be leaked to outsiders."
It could be part of her plan that she speak to CoS members as one of them, and continue to do so.

Let's hope that she continues speaking to the Scientologists, but I am doubtful about that. Don Carlo, you are an optimist, but I am more of a pessimist in this case. Debbie knows how Miscavige had dealt with Pat Broeker, although Pat never said anything publicly against him or CoS in general.

The cult just dropped the hammer on Debbie. Now she's scared and she's trying to back peddle her way out.

She put herself out there.

She shouldn't back down.

I think this ^ is absolutely true. I just don't know if she is pretending to be naive or if she is really naive.

Of no interest to the general public? If that were true no news agency would have carried it! She must know this is not true.

Is she serious? This is weird. She knows Dave McSavage well enough to know such an email IS picking a fight- a big one.

I can't believe she's actually in the same state of mind I was when I wrote my last "KR" to try to effect change within CoS.

She's doing what scientologists do- presenting "acceptable truths" to the press. Ugh!

There is no back-peddling, Debbie. You've got to face the music now. Both from within and from without.

I also think she has concerns about negative backlash from her actions on scientologists. This is her group (scientologists in "good standing") and she doesn't want to be responsible for "harming" them. Because in her mind, that's what the media does, it harms scientologists. Ugh.

I find this sentence particularly interesting. I interpret the sentence to mean Debbie Cook did not send the email to 12,000 scientologists, someone else did. Who is that someone? Whoever you are, a Big thank you!

I asked the question earlier how she got her hands on that database. A 12K list is not something an average person or defector is likely to have. So now I'm wondering- was it someone on the inside? Meaning a Sea Org or Flag staff member or high ranking OT committee member? Oh yeah, wasn't it sent from an "anonymous" source?

Davey, the SP's are getting closer and closer to you. Better stock up on a few more cases of that scotch because it looks like you're gonna need it!

I don't know if this relates to this thread or if anyone else has experienced what I went through when I left $cientology. I'll be speaking as a generality but it may only be what I experienced and no one else may have gone through that. There is, for lack of a better name for it, a fear zone in the region of leaving $cientology. It lies near the transition point of being in $cientology and being out of it. By being out I mean actually becoming an apostate. From Debbie's second letter, it is obvious to me that at this moment Debbie is not an apostate.

At the transition point when one is still in and looking at the decision to leave the phobias that have been put into place by the cult come into play. The losses of friendships and associations come into play. The thought of potential punitive and retributive actions by department twenty come into play. In addition to that, if one is a staff member, they essentially have nothing with which to set themselves up again with a new life.

Then when they actually do decide to leave and do leave the paranoia kicks in. At least it did for me. I spent a couple of weeks expecting nasty retaliation for leaving. It didn't happen with me. Then again, when I was on staff I resided at the bottom of the org board, so in the overall scheme of things, to $cientology, I'm pretty much completely unimportant.

Debbie, on the other hand, in the overall scheme of things, to $cientology, is very important. She was and still is a major opinion leader. I am still of the opinion that if things go nasty for her or she decides to bale that about a third of those remaining, many of them, high rollers, will leave with her.

As to her second letter, reproduced above, to me, it feels like the result of a handling.

I think Debbie is just trying to refute the suggestion that SHE went to the press, and that she is an appostate. I don't see it as back-peddling, as she still maintains that the fundraising is extreme and off-policy. She says she loves the church, but she doesn't like what is happening inside, so she is refuting that she is just disgruntled.

I saw printouts with thousands of Scientologists’ names and addresses at one of so-called Computer Orgs (I forgot its correct name) when I was in Sea Org. That Computer Org was located at the ground flow of Big Blue. Anyone working for that Org could have the aforementioned printout in his possession

Miscavige must be using extreme measures against everyone inside who had access to the 12,000 e-mails addresses, to find out "who the SP is."
