Well, school has been done for a week and a half now and I am looking for a new teaching position for next year. My former school has been closed among much controversy. When I took my teaching position in January I was unaware of the problems that I was walking into when I accepted the position.
Last year....2010-2011 school year the principal was embezzling school funds and teachers were not getting paid. The school fired the principal and hired a management company to help the school file for bankruptcy and recover so that our little school would be able to stay open.
Well, the management company had taken the school for all its money and left the school in squallier. The teachers were only paid substitute teacher pay...$85 a day...no benefits...but the kicker was that when the management company came in to "help" our little school they only made things worse.
The management company was NOT run by educators....so the decisions that were made was not with educational laws or necessities in mind. The fifth graders never had curriculum instead the management company had brought "Scientology" materials to be taught in the school. This is a public charter school. When the teachers were told that they were required to teach this material....some of the teachers pointed out that since we are publicly funded as a school we shouldn't teach religion (this all took place before I came on to the staff). The teachers were fired!

a film maker shot footage and interviewed students, teachers, and parents about our experiences. It was wonderful to finally speak our minds and to get the word out that the teachers did what we could to help these students.
The film is based on the premise that in America there are schools that are dealing with third-world conditions.
