I've had win2k on since RC2 days, and even if I do slag M$ of now and again (well nearly always) I've not yet (after nearly two years) had a crash.

Right enough, I have got decent hardware.

Ok just to impress the s**t out of you. My server is so well behaved, that it can do the following at the same time.

Backup onto Onstream ADR50 Tape drive
Copy a CD from the Plextor SCSI CDROM to the SCSI Sony CD-RW
Play a DVD from the Pioneer SCSI DVD
Download pictures over USB from my digital camera
AND
download via modem.

As I say, all this at the same time.

NO hangs, no time-outs and no failures.

Please translate. I think Crap-paq means "Compaq" but I don't know the other terms. Your post would make a mysterious blank verse poem.

SP2 = Service Pack 2 (Microsoft Win2K bugfixes)

MDAC = Microsoft Data Access Components

Crap-paq = Compaq (in 1998 for instance they managed to deliver more Dead On Arrival (DOA) systems than ALL OTHER manufacturers added together. They also seem to have a complete ineptitude for configuring their own hardware.

SSD = Softpaq (System Software Download)

GPF = General Protection Fault (The default operating mode of Win95, Win98, WinME)

i hear ya. Myself, I use MS stuff cause that's all I know. only been around puters for 3 years. I get to use 2k at work now. Where I was before, had to use 98, with an old printer. The network printer server guys were improving the server end. Every time they did, my printer was so old, didn't know what was going on.

I would have pegged you for a penguin (sp) kind of guy.

I have penguin (kernel 2.4.8 recomp) and NW (5.1) on my other Server. The SuSe 7.3 distie is quite cool.

So I am not a total WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointing devices). Although I do like the KDE X implementation. (Penguin has a bit of trouble with Athlons and Durons and AGP-CPU transfers, a patch from AMD is out there for Win2k, see their Site for further specs and UDs).

BTW, if any of you are going to install Win2K, here is a piece of advice. When you have gone through the copying process and the first reboot, you will see a message at the bottom of the screen which says:
"Press F6 for further SCSI adapters".

When you see this message press F5 and choose the relevant computer type - stay away from ACPI like the plague.

The other thing that you can do is edit the Txtsetup.sif file and in the
[ACPI ENABLE]
part change the value
ACPI-ENABLE from the value 2, to the value 0

Of course to do this you have to copy the entire \i386 dir from the Installation CD to your HD. onto a partition on the system, cause I don't yet know how to WB to a CD-ROM (gd&r)

Appollo13, check out http:\slashdot.org for some real tech talk and science schmoozing. Slashdot even posted the OT materials, were forced to take them down, and took revenge by a blistering anti-COS editorial and links to www.xenu.net and other sites. Andreas noted that visits went way up the day after the editorial. So Slashdotters are techies, pro-free-speech, and occasionally poke at Scientology. I read them every day.
