Hey, all:

Don C.: I think Trey (who fights the paunch a little) would be a PERFECT LRH. He's a terrific voice artist. I think he could do a great rip on the ol' LRH Virginia gentleman mush mouth.

Jack Black would make a swell DM, or how about Wee Man from all the "Jackass" movies and tv shows? Or Verne "Mini Me" Troyer? Wouldn't that piss the Terror Midget off something awful? I'd like to witness the tiny foot-stomping tantrum he would throw when he got that news.

Steve Martin would need to be involved somehow: The cult MindHead in "Bowfinger" was a BIG F.U. to $cientology. Steve Martin would make a great LRH.

Jeffrey Jones (Principal Rooney from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") reminds me (physically) of LRH.

Powers Booth (remember how creepy he was as Jim Jones) has the chops to pull off the role, so does Jeff Bridges.

Also, I'm voting early for Don Cheadle to play Jesse Prince; I'd definitely like to see the showdown between Jesse and Tiny Fists of Fury portrayed in any film. Cheadle seeths better than any actor.

Regards,

Natty

Tsar, who is that actor?

I've added the other names so far, and the list is now full at 64 names. We need to remove a person in order to add a person now. See my note at the bottom about replacing Ernest Borgnine with Steve Martin, and Al Pacino with Derek Jacobi.

Do we want the vote to include comedians? I'm concerned that many uninformed people would just go for the easy joke, and ignore the great actors on the list. Maybe we should have a separate vote for a "campy" Hubbard.

Hey all:

Don C.

I think that's the late, great Donald Pleasance in the Tsar's post. He was, if I'm not mistaken, the busiest actor (counting all movie and T.V. appearances) of all time.

Regards,

Natty

How about Kiefer Sutherland as the young Elron and Donald Sutherland as the old kook. I love both of these guys.

Hmm, now we have to do more pruning to keep the list at 64. I know Hollywood can do wonders with height, but I think the guy playing Ron should be 5 feet 9 inches or taller. Therefore:
Replace Al Pacino (5'6") with Derek Jacobi (5'11")
Replace Al Franken (about 5'7" with Donald Sutherland (about 6'4")
Replace Jack Black (5'6") with Keifer Sutherland (5'9")

Following that rule, we can get three more names in to replace
William Macy (5'8.5")
Robert Downey, Jr. (5'8") and
Rip Torn (5'8.5")

Anthony Hopkins is only 5'8" but should stay for sheer wicked brilliance.

I looked up the heights on www.celebheight.com. Imdb also has the height under imbd.prodetails

Howdy:

Donny C:

I don't think we need to replace anyone due to height considerations: MTP has looked pretty tall for most of his career although he's pretty short.

Put the other actors in flats, put lifts in the shoes of the LRH character (MTP wears 'em!), or do the ultimate: Put the LRH character on a box or the others in a trench!

Personally, I LOVE the idea of Keifer and Donald as LRH now and then!

Donald played Paul Gauguin in "The Wolf at the Door" and he KICKED ASS as a self-obsessed nut.

Jack Black is a DM suggestion...he's small and REALLY intense.

Also: Greg Kinnear is a GREAT possible LRH. Or, how about Nick Cage? He plays crazy well too.

Tim Robbins? He's a great actor and really tall.

Regards,

Natty

I'll answer. That is Donald Pleasance who did a great Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "You only live twice" and was Dr. Michaels in "Fantastic Voyage" plus many, many other things and would have done an incredible LRH but he died in 1995 during heart surgury.

Admittedly I have not read all, most, any, of the above posts, but I am on record here (years ago) as having suggested the spawn of L. Ron Hubbard and his pet Llama ...

Donald Pleasance is an excellent actor. He could do the part.

But I am still sticking with Robert Duvall.

Are there any British actors that could do this Hubbard part well?

I can't believe we forgot about Danny Bonadouchebag! A ginger actor who does steroids has to be considered for the role.

Danny Bonaduce would only work if this were a broad farce in the vein of “Austin Powers. Although I am not against that, Scientology has just done too much harm to the world for the first film made dealing with this subject to be a slapstick comedy, and Bonaduce just does not have that acting chops to pull of such a project.

As much as I adore Robert Duval as an actor, he is just too old to play Hubbard as a young man. Of all those mentioned on this thread, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is hands down the best choice. He could pull off a twenty-something and seventy-something Hubbard.

But is this ALL idle speculation, or has someone in Hollywood actually expressed interest in this project? Keep in mind that most (though not all) biopics are based on a beloved or at least a sympathetic subject. PSH in “Capote was probably an exception, but at least Truman Capote was a beloved writer even if he has not the nicest guy on the planet.

And is there anyone who would really want to direct this project despite the hundreds of obstacles Scientology would no doubt put up? Personally, I would love to see one director step up to the plate and begin casting since Scientology’s inevitable obstructions could possibly turn out to be their single biggest footbullet to date.

I don't want the show to be a spoof like "Springtime for Hitler." I really want to bring CoS down, not make it a wacky hip inside joke. This is why I have doubts about some of the comedians that I have never seen do a dramatic role. Plus, Danny Bonnaduce is 5'6" tall. We HAVE to show a height contrast between LRH and Miscavige without using special effects.

I replaced William H. Macy with Greg Kinnear, who is 5'10" and looks more like LRH, on the list on page 2 of this thread, to keep the number at 64 so we can do a "tournament" elimination.
