Scientology Edits Wiki articles.

Post by Smitty6357 » Thu Aug 16, 2007 1:11 am

This from Wired.com

Caltech graduate student Virgil Griffith just launched an unofficial Wikipedia search tool that threatens to lay bare the ego-editing and anonymous flacking on the site. Enter the name of a corporation, organization or government entity and you get a list of IP addresses assigned to it. Then with one or two clicks, you can see all the anonymous edits made from those addresses anywhere in Wikipedia's pages.

So visit the Wikipedia Scanner and do some sleuthing. http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/

Once your at the scanner type in Scientology to the Name field under the
"Specify the organizations name...." Then click "Reveal my potential victims". In the list that pops up click the check box beside the first entry and then click on "Wikipedia edits ahoy" and see how many articles our friends have changed. To see what was changed click on the link in the "diff" column.

It's been slashdotted - up and down all week.

There's no need to type in Scientology, here's a direct link:
http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/f.php?ip1= ... 3.84.40-47

The author tried Scientology because it has been known for a long while that computers from the CoS domain in California have been used by scientology supporters editing Wikipedia. One of them is presently up before a Wikipedia comm ev for being a jerk. Others have been banned from editing.
All Wikiscanner does is automate a previously time consuming and geeky task that was already being done.

The news has spread via the Internet IT pages into the mainstream media, the Murdoch press spotted the Scientology connection, and there's an AP story out.

Scientology is not alone.
CIA, Vatican 'editing Wiki pages'

An online tool that claims to reveal the identity of organisations that edit Wikipedia pages has shown the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was involved in editing entries.

Wikipedia Scanner allegedly found that workers on the Agency's computers made edits to the page of Iran's president and also that the Vatican has edited entries about Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopaedia where entries can be created and edited by anyone.

Most of the edits detected by the scanner correct spelling mistakes or factual errors, but others have been used to remove potentially damaging material or to deface sites.

Something is afoot with the Wikipedia page on Keith Henson. Note comment at top of page:

An editor has noticed that Arel Henson has done some editing to the page - adding a recent photo of her husband for example.

This is certainly a potential COI, so since other editors watch this page no doubt they will discuss it. It's normal Wikipedia activity, no problem, Arel knows better than to edit anything controversial.

scientology edits its own writings, so we should not be surprised when they edit wiki pages.

Add to CoS, the Vatican and the CIA- it has just been reported on the Australian news that the Prime Minister's office has been busily editing out their blunders. Election coming up!

I found this site on Digg.com, called wikirage.com, which shows the number of unique editors to a wiki page. Shows a strange gap between Aug. 17th and 23rd. Then they spike. What gives?

Anyway I thought this might interest some:
