Hi all,

A quick word to share the delight :D of OCMB France at the story which has invaded the media here today.

I saw it in 'Le Parisien-Aujourd'hui', the largest-selling national daily, which gave it 2 full pages, including an interview with the lady involved and another with Our Friend Roger Gonnet. Unfortunately, my son appears to have walked off with my copy, so this is from memory - I'll try to post a translation next weekend (I'll be away on holiday :) ). I also heard a good piece on the same story on France Info, the national rolling-news station (which means I actually heard it several times - the gridlock round Paris was depressingly impressive).

It is a story already mentioned here - it happened in Sardinia, in Italian territory, where a number of people were arrested for keeping her locked up on an upper floor in a squalid house for more than a month (could someone find the link? I'm about to go on holiday and I'm in rather a rush).

As suspected it was an Introspection Rundown, practised on Martine Boublil, the sister of "prominent French scientologist doctor" Claude Boublil, apparently OT VIII.

Martine, a former $cio from 1978 to 86 who left because she 'saw it was a scam at the top', has a history of depressionHe is accused of having her kidnapped and put through the introspection rundown against her will.

She only escaped by throwing pieces of paper and wood in lipstick inscribed with the Italian for Help into the next door neighbours' garden, and the neighbours only visited at weekends...

She says she will take the matter to court.

Also, Zorro phoned me a little earlier so that we could both have a good gloat.

He is having difficulty getting back in touch with our Anonymous friends for March 15th. Could anyone familiar with Anonymous who might come across a Frenchfag or frog fag (I'm sure I haven't got this right) please take the opportunity to mention this - Zorro/Nono wants to talk.

Love to all (and a big bisou par procuration from Zorro)

That's great news! Thank you, Toml. I can't wait to see how they try to moonwalk out of this one. Heh.

Congratulations to Martine Boublil for demonstrating such courage and determination, and best wishes for her full recovery.

Zorro might want to sign up to www.enturbulation.org forums.
He could discuss with "frenchfags" in the Paris/France thread in the protest section of the forum here....

[Headline]
The strange imprisonment that embarrasses Scientology

[Subhead]
Rescued by the Italian police, Martine Boublil, a 48 year old French
woman, was held prisoner for several weeks by scientologists in an
isolated house in Sardinia. An affair which may relaunch debate over the
Church of Scientology.

For Scientology, this occurs at a bad moment. While the cult problem
returns to the centre of public debate in France, and the Interior
Minister has just reminded officials to take extreme vigilance in dealing
with the subject, a drama has given a practical example of the causes of
the Scientology controversy.

Martine Boublil, 48, former scientologist and sister of one of the highest
level Scientologists in France, Claude Boublil, was found at the end of
January in Sardinia after a month and a half of imprisonment in
appallingly insanitary conditions.

This kidnapping, plainly organised by her brother, had, according to her
statements, begun four months earlier on French soil. Hospitalised since
her rescue, she returned to France on Tuesday.

Jean-Pierre Brard, deputy mayor and member of the parliamentary commission
on cult investigation, alerted by letter the Foreign Minister ten days
ago, requesting him to provide "full protection" for this woman. The
Interior Ministry said it was "fully aware" of the affair. For the moment,
it is the Italian authorities that are making investigations. They have
freed four scientologists after obliging them to remain in Sardinia for
several days.

If she overcomes her fear and possible pressures, Martine Boublil can
lodge a complaint now that she has returned to France. Otherwise the ball
would remain in the Italian camp: without an official request for Franco-
Italian co-operation, the French authorities cannot act. This agrees with
the spokesman of Scientology, Danièle Gounord, who told us that "no legal
action was in hand in France" against its organization. Contacted
yesterday, he denied any involvement of Scientology and insisted that it
was a "family drama".

For Roger Gonnet, former scientologist and now a leading opponent of
Scientology, these methods are on the contrary "typical" of this
organization. Yesterday he met at the Elysee [President's Residence]
Emmanuelle Mignon, the director of cabinet of Nicolas Sarkozy [French
President], to discuss these questions.

Not that it's a big deal or anything but
this article says she's still in Italy.

EX-SCIENTOLOGIST TO RETURN HOME TO FRANCE AFTER KIDNAPPING ORDEAL
Received Saturday, 1 March 2008 12:47:00 GMT
ROME, March 1, 2008 (AFP) - A French former Scientologist who was rescued in January after several weeks of captivity in Sardinia will return home next week, a police spokesman said Saturday.
Martine Boublil, who was found half naked on a mattress infested with insects and worms in a room full of rubbish on January 21, is still recovering in hospital from the ordeal but will return to France "sometime next week," the spokesman told AFP from the northern Sardinian town of Nuoro.
A French diplomat in Rome confirmed that the 48-year-old, whose brother Claude Boublil is a leading Scientologist in France, would go home "soon."
"The French consulate has followed this matter closely since the beginning in close collaboration with the Italian authorities, and Martine Boublil will soon be repatriated to France," the diplomat said.
Nuoro police were alerted to the kidnapping by a caller who reported hearing cries for help from a farmhouse outside Nuoro where Boublil was held.
Four French citizens, a woman and three men, who were arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and identified as Scientologists were released 10 days ago and have since returned to France, the Nuoro police spokesman said.

My translation error! The French article says 'will be' not 'was' also.

Translations of two Agence France Press articles posted by Roger Gonnet to ARS:

****************

Scientology: a Frenchwoman kidnapped in Sardinia will soon be repatriated

ROME, March 1, 2008 (AFP) - a Frenchwoman, kidnapped in Sardinia by members of the Church of Scientology and rescued at the end of January by the Italian police force, will "quickly be repatriated to France", French diplomatic sources in Rome indicated Saturday.

"The French Consulate in Rome has been following this since the beginning in close cooperation with the Italian authorities and Martine Boublil will quickly be repatriated to France", affirmed these sources.

The police in Nuoro (east-central Sardinia), who had rescued the 48 year old Frenchwoman held under deplorable conditions, informed AFP that Mrs. Boublil "was still in hospital but that she might leave Sardinia next week" The prefecture of Nuoro had been alerted by a telephone call concerning appeals for help coming from a country house located on Ortobene hill, close to Nuoro.

The police officers had discovered on 21st January Martine Boublil, sister of Claude Boublil, an important member of the church of Scientology in France, locked up in a room filled with rubbish. Initially identified as being of Tunisian origin, she had been found half-naked and sleeping on an mattress infested with vermin, according to the local police force.

Four French people, a woman and three men, identified as members of the Church of Scientology and suspected of having detained Martine Boublil against her will, had been arrested then, a spokesman of the prefecture of local police force indicated at the time.

These four people were released ten days ago and have since returned to France, the same source said Saturday.

The spokesman of the Church of Scientology in France, Daniele Gounord, invited by the daily newspaper "Le Parisien" to comment, spoke of a "family drama" and indicated that Scientology did not have "anything to say" on the question.

"Le Parisien" also reported the testimony of Martine Boublil, who said she had been "in hell".

She said she had been a Scientology member for eight years before leaving. Several years later, she was hospitalized for depression. According to her, her brother (Claude Boublil, one of the organizers of the Scientology Celebrity center in Paris) made her leave and "took her by force to a house in Normandy belonging to a scientologist, then to Sarthe and finally to Sardinia".

In Sardinia, she claims to have been forced to remain locked up in a "disgusting room" on the first floor of the house, guarded by two young men who did not speak to her, with a chamber pot for sanitation and only a tee-shirt for clothing. A woman was also in the house. She claims to have written an S.O.S message with lipstick on cardboard which she threw into the garden of neighbours who alerted the police.

After her release, Martine Boublil was hospitalized in a psychiatric establishment in Sardinia.

******************************

Fenech (UMP) for a board of inquiry into the Scientology

PARIS, March 1, 2008 (AFP) - George Fenech (UMP), vice-president of the parliamentary group on cults, proposed on Saturday the creation of a parliamentary board of inquiry into Scientology after a Frenchwoman was held prisoner by members of the cult in Sardinia.

"This recent affair casts suspicion once more on the Church of Scientology with a French victim, Martine Boublil, claiming serious infringements of her freedom and her physical integrity, and indicates the real dangers of this organization", the deputy said in an official statement.

M. Fenech "will present in the French National Assembly a motion for a resolution creating a parliamentary board of inquiry to determine the real nature of the activities of this movement, its methods of operation, its sources of financing and in a more general way if the organization respects the laws of the French Republic", the text adds.

Martine Boublil, held by force in Sardinia by members of the Church of Scientology and released at the end of January by the Italian police force, "will soon be repatriated to France", French diplomatic sources in Rome indicated on Saturday.

Until this news spreads into the rest of the world media then most of you ain't going to find an awful lot jumping right out of the internets at you without some effort (more than your usual basic regular googlenews search for "scientology").

Hartley suggests....

The best way to find news is on the Internets. Go to Google France News:

The following is fuller text from the interview in Le Parisien, presumably from their printed edition. Translated by mitsu for Glosslip.

"Some years ago I suffered from a severe depression. Claude took me under his care. I was hospitalized for the first time, against his advice, for five days. He made me leave; scientologists vehemently fight against psychiatry. When my mother died in 2007, my other brother, Gilbert, who is also a doctor but not a scientologist, had me admitted.

"In August, Claude, who this time removed me from the hospital, forcibly brought me to Normandy, to a house which belonged to a scientologist. Then to Sarthe and finally to Sardaigne. It’s in Nuoro, since December, that the conditions in which I lived in became much worse. The two young people watched to ensure that I did not leave my room which was on the first floor ( upstairs) . Finally, the room was filthy with only a mattress on the floor to sleep on. In the beginning I would sleep sitting up on a trunk. The others they slept downstairs in the living room. The woman was in charge. They spoke not a word to me. To say yes they would blink their eyes. For no they would leave their eyes open. They would bring me food, essentially some CORDON BLEU (type of chicken concoction), morning, noon and evening and some fruit. To relive myself I had a chamber pot. For clothing I had only a T-Shirt. I had no means to (was not able to) wash myself. If I tried to leave my room I was forcibly pushed back."

SCIENTOLOGY
"A devoted brother who wanted to help his mentally disturbed sister"

On January 21 this year, in Nuoro (Sardinia), the Italian police were
alerted by neighbors and found Frenchwoman Martine Boublil locked in a
house, living in deplorable sanitary conditions. Found half naked, she
slept on a mattress infested with vermin, according to the local
police. She was guarded by three Scientologists. Since the police
suspected she was being held against her will, they arrested and then
released them. Her brother, Dr. Claude Boublil, who is also a member
of Scientology, traveled there with them. In an interview in Paris,
Martine Boublil -- also a member of Scientology several years ago --
claimed to have been "imprisoned," claiming that her brother had
"taken her by force" to the house. After being hospitalized in a
psychiatric facility, Martine Boublil returned to Paris on Tuesday,
March 4.

For the first time, in an exclusive interview, Dr. Claude Boublil
denies that his sister was kidnapped, and wishes to correct this
matter, which he considers to be "a family drama".

How - and why - was your sister found in Sardinia?

-- We have to go back a few steps. I am a doctor, and my sister
Martine had to undergo two psychiatric hospitalizations in the Paris
region. She asked me to get her out of the hospital. I put a lot of
research into alternatives to help her out of this dilemma, since
hospitalization was unsuccessful. Despite doing a lot of work, I was
unable to find a genuine alternative resource in France that was
likely to help us. Therefore, it was my duty to find a solution,
especially since my sister had always refused recommendations of
hospitalization, and preferred to stay with me. I needed to find a
place in the countryside, in the open air, far from the disturbances
of the city where Martine could have long walks, rest and sleep well.

My task was not always easy because Martine believed that her toilet
and bathroom were poisoned, and she would not let anyone approach or
touch her bedding, clothing or belongings. Sardinia was recommended by
friends who found a place in the mountains in a beautiful environment.

Why Sardinia? Who owns this house?

-- This is a vacation home that I rented. It's in a holiday resort in
the midst of many other homes in a wooded nature park. Specifically,
at this location, I managed to find a "doctor" who had the skills
necessary to help a person like my sister who suffers from a
delusional, paranoid psychosis. It is a light therapy that is totally
opposed to the brutality of the psychiatric treatments that my sister
rejected.

You were accompanied by four others: Marie D. 42, Julien Q., 18,
Rasheed K. 18, and Daniel B. Why so many people, and by chance, all
members of Scientology?

-- Because caring for someone as delirious as my sister requires
constant vigilance and a permanent presence. We went by car, all
three, Julien, Rachid and Daniel. We had sent Marie by plane. Why are
they all members of Scientology? Like myself for over 30 years? Simply
because they were friends from Scientology!

They must have been really motivated to take on such an adventure.

-- Yes. I looked for people who I was confident could help me in such
a difficult, complex task.

But, your sister accuses you of having kidnapped her?

-- I have never heard that said. Also, the house was open to the full
view of everyone. There was never the slightest idea of hiding
anything during our trip by boat and car. In Genoa, we were even
questioned by the Italian police. Seeing the obvious signs of my
sister's agitation, they brought in an ambulance with a psychiatrist.
My sister told them she wanted to continue the journey with me to
Sardinia. Where is the isolation?

What was your role in this case?

-- The role of a dedicated brother who wants to help his mentally
disturbed sister, who specifically asked to leave those psychiatric
hospitals on several occasions.

Your attitude fits well with Scientology beliefs of combating
psychiatry with total force, doesn't it?

-- I'm a doctor myself. I know the consequences of certain psychiatric
practices, and I wanted to avoid those failed treatments. So I tried
to find a more gentle alternative for my sister. I know from my
experience as a Scientologist that there are alternatives to forced
hospitalization. Unfortunately, I see that my attempt has obviously
failed, because she was again put into a psychiatric hospital in
France.

But your sister says she was living in hell, that she could not get
out of her room upstairs, she slept on a mattress on the floor, she
relieved herself in a basin, and that she couldn't bathe....

-- It's easy to understand when you know, as I do, that my sister felt
she was being persecuted; it was her terror of germs. She thought any
garment given to her was poisoned, as well as her toilet, her bidet,
the sink, the shower, in short everything around her. She even refused
to let anyone near her bed. And she had a beautiful bathroom!

Your sister came to the Church of Scientology in 1978 when she was 18
years old. She said it was you who encouraged her in this path. She
stayed there eight years. Why did she leave?

-- It was her own decision. In Scientology we come and leave as we
please. But I remember that she was very happy when she was there.

It is said that you are one of the ringleaders of Scientology in
France, that you are a "Thetan Level VIII", the highest current grade
of Scientology, and an official of Celebrity Center in Paris. Aren't
there are only a dozen French people who have reached that level?

-- False. I have no position in the Church of Scientology Celebrity
Center or in Paris. I am just a parishioner. We should not confuse
everything. The level I have reached is "OT 8" and not "Thetan 8."
This is a level of spiritual awareness. It is not a hierarchy in
Scientology.

The case has made the front page of all the Italian newspapers and
there have been many news reports. And the Italian investigators
questioned you, right? What about France?

-- Since the Italian justice has been informed about this matter, it
seems to be better understood. It is only a personal matter between me
and my sister that has been highly publicized for other reasons during
the same week as the resurgence of controversy about Scientology in
France. The media uproar about this affair can only be harmful to my
sister's health. My lawyers are currently considering the possibility
of prosecution for invasion of privacy and defamation.

Where is your sister now? Have you seen her?

-- I know she was taken to the St. Anne psychiatric hospital Tuesday
night when she returned to France. She phoned me several times to ask
me to get her out of that hospital. She left a message on my answering
machine.

What said this message?

-- (He rises to let us listen to the recording, a voice that is frail
but determined). It says:: "Claude, what I would like is for you to
take me in with you. I love you all very much... I never complained...
This is not true..."
