SCIENTOLOGY TRIED FOR FRAUD
lejdd.fr 22nd May 2009
http://www.lejdd.fr/cmc/scanner/societe ... html?popup

Quote:
Scientology tried for fraud

Regarded in France as a cult, Scientology will be tried the first time from Monday in Paris until June 17 for "fraud in an organized gang." Seven officials, including its french leader Alain Rosenberg, 60yo, and its two main branches in France, will face three plaintiffs: two ex-followers and the Order of Pharmacists. Individuals, also prosecuted for "illegal practice of pharmacy", face up to ten years in prison and a million euros fine. Legal persons may be fined five times and the prohibition of activity. Which would lead to the dissolution of the group in France

Hello David Miscavige. How are you today?

wwp thread: http://forums.whyweprotest.net/123-leak ... ance-46116

added Info from trial press coverage:

The trial is expected to last from Mon. May 25 to Wed. June 17, 2009. Today, May 25, 2009, Jean-Pierre Brard, former chairman of MIVILUDES, testified that Scientology tried at the last minute to obtain withdrawal of the complaints in exchange for large sums, but that these offers were refused. Defense lawyer Alexis Gublin argued that one of the civil parties, UNADFI (National Union of Associations for the Defense of Families and Individuals who are Victims of Sects) should be disqualified; the decision will be delivered at the same time as the verdict of the trial.

Investigating judge: Jean Christophe Hullin

Presiding judge: Sophie-Hélène Château

Lawyers for the defendants:
Patrick Maisonneuve
Alexis Gublin

Lawyer for the plaintiffs:
Olivier Morice

Defendants:

* Alain Frank Rosenberg, 60, director of the Celebrity Center in Paris.
* Jean-François Valli, member of the COS since 1989, "guidance counselor" and employee of the SEL (Scientologie espace liberté) bookstore.
* Max Barbault, employer of Nelly Reziga, alleged to have given her a personality test and obliged her to take a communication course, before firing her.
* Three other individuals.
* It was revealed during today's proceeding that a seventh defendant is now deceased.
* Association spirituelle de l'Eglise de Scientologie
* SEL (Scientologie espace liberté) bookstore

Plaintiffs:

* Aude-Claire Malton, ex-Scientologist, filed a complaint Dec. 22, 1998
* Nelly Reziga, ex-Scientologist, filed a complaint July 8, 1999
* Two other plaintiffs accepted a settlement from the COS.
* Ordre des pharmaciens (Order of Pharmacists)

This english version of radio France International might be useful to bookmark for developments on this story.
Here's an article from the 20th May with an audio clip which has an interview with author/journalist Jonny Jacobsen.

Jonny Jacobsens website, where I'm sure he'll be following this closely...

An interesting report on the upcoming trial from Britain's Channel Four News:

http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/s ... in/3163272

It features Olivier Morice, the lawyer representing the plaintiff(s); former member Alain Stoffen, whose book (in French) was published earlier this month; Scientology's spokeswoman in France Danièle Gounord; and Georges Fenech, head of the government cult watchdog Miviludes.

Thanks for the links. Excellent Channel 4 news report.

If you google scientology on google news right now you'll see a pathetic attempt by the cult to push the flap off the front page with their usual junk PR releases. These are mostly old PR articles regurgitated. None of their PR releases mentions the trial, there is no real mention of the fail protest in SF against psychiatry since the APA called them a Hate Group and all it is is the usual fluff stuff.
Of course, Anonymous, is countering this.

Apparently not.

In the UK most reporters themselves don't really know enough about the cult to fear it in the first place. The ones that know enough, also don't fear them. However, for most news editors, there is not usually anything important or exciting enough about scientology to be worth reporting in the UK mainstream news that will usurp things like War, Economic crisis, Politcians abusing expenses, cat stuck up a tree in Godalming etc.
Channel 4 News comes on in the hour after the other main national TV stations have had their news, its a much longer program, and tends cover things that the other stations don't have time or the inclination for. C4 were the ones who gave good coverage of the arrest and attempted prosecution of Epic Nose Guy in London for having a sign that said scientology is a CULT, as well as police faggotry on one of their own reporters during a protest at East Grinstead.

I think we can expect a lot more from C4 as the trial gets underway.

Quote:
The Church of Scientology in France has gone on trial accused of fraud in a case which could see the organisation banned.

Registered as a religion in the United States, with celebrity members such as actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, Scientology enjoys no such legal protection in France and has faced repeated charges of being a money-making cult.

The Church is said to have illegally charged people thousands of euros to use it for bogus tests and cures.

Olivier Maurice, lawyer for those prosecuting, said “if the church’s methods prove to be crooked then we must ask serious questions about whether it can be allowed to remain in business on French high streets.”

The case centres on a complaint made by a woman who claims she paid 21,000 euros for books, purification packs and saunas after she was persuaded to take a personality test.

Scientology has faced numerous setbacks in France with members convicted of fraud and violating privacy laws.

But Patrick Maisonneuve, the lawyer defending the church said: “the alleged actions of a few bad apples cannot be allowed to ruin the whole church.”

If found guilty, the Church, which has no legal protection as a religion in France, could be fined five million euros and ordered to shut down its practices across the country.

CoS tries to play victim; that they won't be allowed to believe in Scientology. The truth is they won't be allowed to routinely, AS PART OF THEIR "RELIGION," practice fraud and practicing medicine without a license.

Let's hope President Obama reads the NY Times article on this before Tom Cruise tries to sweet-talk him into criticizing France. NPR said Cruise had earlier talked to the French President Sarkozy. If CoS sends Cruise on a world tour as its spokesman against the French trial, Cruise will lose even more popularity. Cruise might pull all the strings and try to get his anti-France message across on "soft" interview shows like Oprah, but Oprah might be less of a push-over. She might demand a critic come on as well, and Tom the control freak will at first refuse. When Tom finds out nobody is letting him on "unopposed," CoS might push him to actual DO debates or harder interviews. Cruise with his big ego and work ethic would drill for a debate, but CoS will coach him, and they're inept at thinking like the opposition or even acknowledging its humanity. At the debate/hard interview, Cruise will show up cocky but unprepared for how hard Scientology is to defend. Cruise will get humiliated, and might erupt. Cruise is used to being the adored, the fawned-upon, the one who underlings can't even look at. Tom canned his publicist Pat Kingsley when she tried to get him to just stay silent about Scientology. Tom's bubble protecting him has been near-complete, and we know his ego is brittle. Yet even though Cruise is risky, and might even be turned against Scientology, he's "the best" they have.

Any interviewer reading this, please don't let Tom come on interviews with little Suri on his lap, and then boo-hoo about the French. Who can be "mean" and argue with Cruise when his daughter is there? Tom would be hiding behind Suri's little skirt!

Travolta has been quiet about CoS for awhile, and probably still in mourning, so maybe he's not in the mood to campaign against the French. Other US Scientology "celebrities" like Jenna Elfman just aren't known to most world leaders. Tommy Davis and Miscavige are truly unknown to the general public and to world leaders, and both are not that articulate or charismatic. Nobody in Scientology can genuinely argue well with a skilled interviewer.

Saw this report on the BBC TV news...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8067590.stm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTy_96rWZDc

After reading reports so far, I'm sensing that the cult and their lawyer, judging by repeated statements along the lines of "there are always a few bad apples" and "cannot be responsible for individual members", is apparently quite prepared to throw the accused under the bus in favour of saving the "religion".

There were also statements from thier lawyer of "45,000 scientologists" in France. Where are they? Why aren't they all up in arms and shouting about it when their very religion is at stake? Well, It's because they are not 45,000 members. They'd be lucky to find a 10th or even 100th of that. I don't doubt that 45,000 have been through their doors and maybe took a course or two but there are more ex-scientologists than scientologists.
Mailing list =/= members.

I wonder what day two of the trial will bring.
