I don't know but you could be correct. This guy apparently has a history with this. I would find it hard to believe that he has not looked in to it as he has stated he is tired of all the emails. Anonamace has stated he has heard the spots on air and I suspect he would know. Stranger stuff has happened.

You, obviously, have not been to podunk Lincoln City, Oregon. Small town mentality. The listening audience of his radio station is small compared to larger cities like Portland. I think anyone at a small radio station in a small town would be a little shaken with a shitload of emails coming in from outside their little community.

Lincoln City, by the way, lies in the part of Oregon which has long been recognized as a long time haven for survivalists, i.e., stocking of weapons, underground bunkers, etc.

Lincoln City, by the way, is a small coastal tourist trap like most small coastal towns in Oregon. Not a haven for survivalists.

It's bizarre how unprofessional Miller's email responses are. If he had written another response, one would expect it to be in all caps!

Would expect an answer along the lines of:

"Thank you for the information. We always value feedback from our listeners..."

It never occurred to me until now that - duh - the "church" would give their dangerous drug rehab program a name so similar to an organization with a good reputation (Narcotics Anonymous).
I've only READ the word, "Narconon," but it wasn't until I said it out loud that it became obvious.
The deception's not surprising, given how Hubby thought that invoking the word "science" into the name of his cult would make it sound legitimate. I guess it's just good marketing.

I mentioned earlier in this thread how the guy kept calling it Narcanon instead of Narconon. True, Narcotics Anonymous never call themselves Narcanon, but many people refer to it as such. Think of Alanon and others that are abbreviated that way -- it's an easy assumption to think Narconon and Narcotics Anonymous are one and the same.

There's another thread in the Narconon section about a guy who died after I guess sneaking out of the Atlanta area Narconon. Even the guy who examined the body doesn't know the difference between Narcotics Anonymous and Narconon, as he said the guy was living in a Narcotics Anonymous halfway house:

I should have alluded to the fact that both you, Simonymous, and Glib had been the ones to mention Narcotics Anonymous -- I would not have thought of it otherwise.

Oh, don't worry about that. I mentioned it because I wanted to refer to it, not "hey, it was me first!" I quoted you because it was a good point, one that I wanted to add to, so no worries! :)

I was putting around in the Narconon section and found that document above. That's something that worries me -- if medical examiners and radio station owners who run PSA's don't know the difference between Narconon and Narcotics Anonymous, how will the family of an addict, desperate to save their loved one?

You know the thugs that run the cult would, if they could, purchase the copyright to "Narcotics Anonymous" so they could market the two as the same, just as they did with the Cult Awareness Network, turning a well-respected, legitimate organization into a monumental farce.

Here's the way to really get their attention.

You need to send your concerns via snail mail... not addressed to Mr. Miller or any individual, but to PUBLIC INSPECTION FILE at the station's address. Email 'poons don't cut it.

Every radio and television station is required to remain a public inspection file, which is reviewed when they apply for a license renewal. Any member of the public is also entitled to review a station's public inspection file during normal business hours.

As noted, the station is running the NarCONon promos as a free public service announcement, not as paid advertising. Having worked at small market television and radio stations in the past, I can tell you that they often welcome slickly-produced PSA material to fill the holes in their programming. Some small stations even take "news" stories submitted by public relations firms and run them during newscasts because they don't have the resources to do actual reporting themselves.

However, dealing with letters to the Public Inspection File is a lot more complicated than sending a snarky reply to an email... and far outweighs any benefit of running a NarCONon PSA.
