My study of the writings of Aleister Crowley began, years ago, when I came across an official OTO copy of his 1904 'Book of the Law' in an occult bookstore. It caught my attention as its cover was the same dark red ("blood red') as the covers of the Scientology Technical Volumes.

That's an interesting association, Phobos. I'm certainly not a Crowley expert, but I see in 777, that in the King scale of Color (Column XV), crimson does represent blood, and also associates with the third sephira of Binah, Babalon, etc. [Crowley, A., Regardie, I., & Crowley, A. (1973). 777 and other Qabalistic writings of Aleister Crowley: Including Gematria & Sepher sephiroth (1st pb. edition 1986, p. 67). York Beach, Me: S. Weiser.] In this connection Crowley refers to "the Scarlet Woman and her Cup in Liber 418." (hermetic.com: Liber 418.)

On the Scientological side of that path, the Red Vols contain Hubbard's "technical" "Understandings" (associating with Binah, Babalon, Understanding, etc.) that Scientologists must "duplicate and apply."

L. Ron Hubbard wrote:
UNDERSTANDING, 1. understanding is composed of affinity, reality and communication. (SH Spec 79, 6609C01) 2. knowingness could simply be a potential understanding. It could be an ability being carried forward, an action taking place; understanding is an action. Understanding is knowingness of life to a certain direction and object and thing or action. The understanding is knowingness in action. We break down this and we get affinity, reality and communication. (5411CM05) 3. understanding is a sort of a total solvent, it’s the universal solvent, it washes away everything. (SH Spec 79, 6609C01)

Hubbard, L. R. (1975). Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary. Los Angeles: Church of Scientology of California Publications Organization.

Scientology training and processing attacks peoples' previous "understandings" from parents, teachers, religious authorities, etc. Starting with initial contact such as through a Way to Happiness pamphlet, or Universal Declaration to Human Rights handout, an after-school tutoring program, a Criminon course, or Narconon detox, Scientology begins to "wash away" all our supposedly wrong understandings and "false data" from "earlier" sources and replace these with Hubbard's superior "understandings" and life "solutions." Only by KSW #1 and compliance with Hubbard's orders do Scientologists create a world without insanity, TOTAL FREEDOM, etc.

Interestingly, Heinlein mentioned a "Red Grimoire," in Magic, Inc.. In his illuminating letter to John W. Campbell of 27 September 1940, Heinlein claimed it was "an actual book, located in the Library of Paris." (Heinlein archives: CORR218-1)

In his Paul Haggis profile in The New Yorker, Lawrence Wright touched on Hubbard’s involvement with Jack Parsons and quoted some new claims in this story made by Scientology spokesperson Tommy Davis about Hubbard and Robert Heinlein.

Lawrence Wright wrote:
After the war, Hubbard’s marriage dissolved, and he moved to Pasadena, where he became the housemate of Jack Parsons, a rocket scientist who belonged to an occult society called the Ordo Templi Orientis. An atmosphere of hedonism pervaded the house; Parsons hosted gatherings involving “sex magick” rituals.

In a 1946 letter, Parsons described Hubbard: “He is a gentleman, red hair, green eyes, honest and intelligent.” Parsons then mentioned his wife’s sister, Betty Northrup, with whom he had been having an affair. “Although Betty and I are still friendly, she has transferred her sexual affections to Ron.” One day, Hubbard and Northrup ran off together. In the official Scientology literature, it is claimed that Hubbard was assigned by naval intelligence to infiltrate Parsons’s occult group. “Hubbard broke up black magic in America,” the church said in a statement.

[…]

At the meeting, Davis brought up Jack Parsons’s black-magic society, which Hubbard had supposedly infiltrated. Davis said, “He was sent in there by Robert Heinlein”—the science-fiction writer—“who was running off-book intelligence operations for naval intelligence at the time.” Davis said, “A biography that just came out three weeks ago on Bob Heinlein actually confirmed it at a level that we’d never been able to before.” The book to which Davis was referring is the first volume of an authorized Heinlein biography, by William H. Patterson, Jr.[1] There is no mention in the book of Heinlein’s sending Hubbard to break up the Parsons ring, on the part of naval intelligence or any other organization. Patterson says that he looked into the matter, at the suggestion of Scientologists, but found nothing.

The documents I’ve encountered in my admittedly brief time in the Heinlein archives do not support the claims made here by Tommy Davis, and in fact refute Davis’ claims.

William H. Patterson Jr. recently blogged about being contacted by Scientology and by The New Yorker concerning Hubbard's relationship with Heinlein.
William H. Patterson, Jr. wrote:
The author [Lawrence Wright] contacted me when a high church official [1] said the biography confirmed that Heinlein as Hubbard’s naval intelligence handler sent Hubbard to Jack Parsons to break up “black magic” practice.[2]

The author of the article[3] noted that the biography doesn’t say anything about this. He contacted me by email and we had a short exchange a couple of months ago in which I said I had investigated that claim on behalf of the Scientologists but had found no evidence for the claim.

I thought I'd push this forward, since scientology and the occult are again being discussed and researched.

Barbie, goto Caroline or Gerry's site for this stuff. It will make your arm-hairs stand on end.
