A group of hacktivists acting under the banner, "Anonymous," has warned a church with a controversial history that unspoken retribution will follow it continues its practice of inflammatory protests.

In an open letter to the Westboro Baptist Church, Anonymous has put the anti-gay, fundamentalist church on notice that "the damage incurred will be irreversible," and that "neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover."

The Westboro Baptist Church is led by Rev. Fred Phelps. It has drawn particular attention for carrying out anti-gay protests at funerals of military servicemen with signs celebrating the deaths of the soldiers with signs like "God Hates the USA" or "Thank God for 9/11." The group operates a website with the URL godhatesfags.com.

In its letter, Anonymous wrote the following:.......

This is the silly type of response that drives & motivates hate-mongers to act. Ever since the Westboro group went from protesting homosexuals to protesting funerals of soldiers, they've received a shitload of publicity and attention to their cause, and they eat it up. They don't care if it's bad publicity... it puts them on the map and their website, mutliple Twitter pages & YouTube videos are evidence that they've become attention whores to the max.

The publicity they've generated has also earned them hundreds of like-minded supporters with cash that has paid for their multiple cross-country protests. They even advertise their upcoming protests: http://www.godhatesfags.com/schedule.html.

It's sad that some anons feel the need to give them a bigger voice by threatening them..

I understand what you're saying, but isn't there a balance somewhere, the whole "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." bit?

I am a little bit confused about the Westboro Baptist Church. Like, who does this "church" not hate. Does anyone have the short list? I know they hate the homosexuals, the lesbians, the transgendered, the misfiled, the jews, catholics, and protestants, honorable war dead, women who can't cook, men won't dance, dogs that don't bark, and a whole other raft of targets of their hates.

So, who does Westboro Baptist Church not hate? Anyone got the short list?

Does anyone know why Westboro Baptist Church, with all of their hating, takes the name of John the Baptist who hated no one at all?

If you all think that WBC needs a hug or one of those Vermont Teddy Bears so they can sleep at night, I'm willing to put up some $$.

I dunno. I'm thinking that the WBC needs to take on the Muslims. You know, crazies against crazies! No rules, battle to the death. Let us see whose Gawd is best. On this side, the Gawd of the Jews (whose holy name cannot be writ) who created light. On this other side, the Gawd of the Muslims, Allah, (whose holy name cannot be writ because Muslims are generally illiterate, and WHO created sexual relations with children, and found it good.)

Yep. Send crazie Westboro to Detroit to battle the crazie Muslims. Winner lives, loser buys bacon for the crowd. Crowd rescues the sexually abused children from the Muslims and the sexually repressed adults from the Wesboro. The world moves on.

Let me be VERY clear - this does not originate with Anonymous, and hopefully Anon will continue to ignore them.
The Anon website which "announced" this uses free posting. This was posted by WBC.
Again - the letter from "Anonymous" to WBC was posted by WBC themselves. And within an extremely short time there was a "response", challenging Anon to come.
This is a publicity stunt by WBC. They hope triggering an attack with Anon will bring them cred. Or at least the Streisand Effect.
Please don't help WBC with this horrid attempt at publicity. Don't buy in, don't let others buy in, and do be disgusted at the lengths Phelp and co. will go for face time.

Interesting if true considering when Anonymous laid down the gauntlet to Scientology they did so on video.

If you want to know more about WBC, there is a documentary posted on youtube done by BBC's Louis Theroux - "The Most Hated Family in America". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOrz5k0jWdU&feature=related

http://narcissists-suck.blogspot.com/se ... red+phelps

From Narcissists Suck blog:

Sometimes the narcissist is able to form a family circle (or any social circle) in which there are no dissenters. Either the dissenters have fled or have been forcefully ousted by the majority rule of the narcissist and his underlings. For an extreme example of this we have Fred Phelps. He has formed a church which is entirely populated with his own family members. Only a couple of his children have escaped Fred's cultish family. But most are still firmly in his clutches, some of which are demonstrating they are lesser narcissists in his kingdom. Fred has managed to form a large enough circle of pathological people (shaped from infancy by his pathology) to ensure that there is never a "critical mass" of good angels that can gather enough power or influence to force him to move on. This scenario of the narcissist gaining a large enough mass of sycophants, enablers, beta narcissists in his Pathological Space means it can camouflage this red flag to onlookers and acquaintances. Beware. In this case look for a cult following. If you find a person with a cult-leader type of effect on the people in his social circle then you can be damned sure you're looking at a narcissist. In a cult-type setting it always looks like the "Cult Leader" is the immovable rock never having to vacate his setting but forcing out those who don't fit in. It is a fake-out form of stability. Remember that families can be cult-like in construct.

Well that could be true. I wouldn't put it past the WBC. If true, it's really a crazy thing to do to piss off an Anom Group, who might do exactly what that letter threatens to do.

Does Anom have proof WBC did it? If so, have they posted it? It's all over the news....so if WBC did do it, Anom better get it out PDQ to all those news outlets that have reported it.

Yes, indeed WBC is an abomination. But they aren't going to go down quietly. Threats and violence begat threats and violence.

If WBC didn't write that letter, that anonymous group.....abeit maybe with good intentions, (some anoms do seem to thrive on publicity too) is threatening to break the law, which some anom groups have done before.

Freedom of speech should not extend to hate speech. And illegal acts should not be used to stop it. WBC's (and anom's)rights end where their neighbors' noses begin. There should be laws passed to protect the innocent. And WBC and anyone else who break the law, should be prosecuted.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church said they want revenge after someone slashed the tires on their van during visit to protest a military funeral in McAlester. The group said it plans to now target funerals for Oklahoma children.

The group said it planned to picket the funeral of an 8-year-old Burneyville girl who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week, although no protesters were seen near the services. The group said it would be in Owasso on Thursday to protest the funeral of a girl who died in a car crash.

True! They're quite the Pharisees. It's amazing how they miss the whole point of the New Testament!

From our point of view, the Westboro cult demonstrates that calling your organisation a 'Church' does not in itself make you nice and respectable.

I'm positive that the WBC didn't write the letter... anons have been waging a verbal & blogging war against the WBC for years. After I videotaped their protest in Los Angeles last year & spoke with Shirley Phelps-Roper, I was contacted by her son, Nate, who saw my YouTube video and we had an interesting chat about the origins of the Phelps family and why they're doing what they're doing. He said Shirley and her daughter, Megan, are the ringleaders of the protests and they get a "narcissistic buzz" from all the knee-jerk reactions to their protests.

When the reactions to their protesting the gay & AIDS community died down, they decided to up the ante & start attacking American soldiers & protesting at their funerals. Nate said it was wrong to presume that everyone hated the WBC and that if the IRS audited his sister's finances, they might be in for some surprises, as she receives thousands of dollars in donations from supporters that help finance their protests across the U.S.

I emailed him & asked him about the letter and he replied that his sister would not have written the letter, but it was certainly the means that gave his sister the impetus to react. I believe some anon wrote it knowing the reaction it would get from Shirley & Megan.

How can you hate the terminally ill, children that die in traffic accidents and soldiers killed in action? What did they ever do to you and what's the connection between these groups? The kids obviously weren't gay. Nor were most soldiers. Many AIDS-victims were not gay.
And even if they were, SO WHAT? Does that give anybody the right to disturb funerals?

How can someone hate so much and call herself a Christian? I don't get it.

But it's clear the group thrives on publicity. Let's not do them that favor, although they are very hard to ignore.
