How can someone hate so much and call herself a Christian? I don't get it. But it's clear the group thrives on publicity. Let's not do them that favor, although they are very hard to ignore.
At best, they are entertainment, and sensationalism & tabloid news is a multi-billion dollar business. Ten years ago, there were the National Enquirer & other tabloids. Today, we have tabloid multimedia on the Internet and television. Sensationalism sells & entertains.

I don't agree that ignoring them resolves the problem. Exposing their true colors will. I don't know of one church that has saddled up to the WBC and shown its support. I think a greater issue that needs to be addressed is that Shirley & Megan brings their young children & grandchildren with them to the protest and to see these young kids with fearful, bewildered looks on their faces holding signs, and being yelled at by counter protesters is incredibly heart breaking, and I wonder why Kansas Children's Services hasn't intervened & stopped this.

In retrospect, if one of the young Phelps children is injured at a protest, then it empowers the Phelp's cause even more.. precisely why they use the children as instruments of their hatred.

Looks like the letter did come from Anonymous after all.

The real questions are "Was it really Anonymous?" or "Which Anonymous" or better yet; "Who is Anonymous?" since anonymous is not a group. Obviously anyone who does anything anonymously is anonymous. Whoever wrote this Phelps letter is still anonymous because nobody is sure yet who did it, it could very well be that one of the Phelps did it anonymously and blamed it on anonymous!

Before blaming or crediting Anonymous please read this article about the Anonymous~VS~Phelps/Westboro.

Empty suit: the chaotic way Anonymous makes decisions

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news ... isions.ars

Excerpt:

Quote:
Anonymous, no strangers to the art of the troll, largely ignored the bait. In a letter posted to AnonNews on the same day, 20 Anons took jabs at the media for writing up the story based on that initial Anonymous statement. "Just because it was posted on AnonNews doesn't mean every single Anon is in agreement, in fact in this case it doesn't even mean a single Anon is in agreement," they said.

As for Westboro, the letter calls the church's troll a "honeypot" designed to harvest the IP addresses of those tempted to attack the church's websites, presumably with the goal of then suing them in order to drum up even more publicity. The church should be ignored.

Still, Anonymous couldn't let the insults pass entirely without answer. "In closing, let us assure you: We are not BAWWWING sissies, nor are we afraid of your false god; we're just really busy. Stay tuned, and we'll come back to play another day."

But when no one's in control, such pronouncements only matter insofar as they convince others in the group. Indeed, on February 20, some Anon posted the names, phone numbers, and addresses of the entire Phelps clan under the title "West Derpish Derp Church." People were asked to "stop wasting time DDoSing these faggots. They're trolling us, so troll them back."

Regardless of who wrote the letter, it's given the WBC another cause to latch onto. They have added the link "Dear Anonymous Cowards" to the front page of their website. http://www.godhatesfags.com/

Someone email me this link to a remarkable video, which I would encourage everyone with an interest in the WMC to watch. In 2007, Shirley Phelps gave Louis Theroux, a BBC reporter, unfettered access to the WBC & family members & he lived with them while filming the documentary. The powerful docu shows where the hatred & anger comes from that fuels this family as well as how the hatred is ingrained into the children at a very young age. Theroux also has heart-to-hearts with some of the young women in the family.

http://thecitadelinformer.wordpress.com ... ech-video/

My heart broke at 33:30 in the video when Shirley's 7-year old grandson is hit in the head with a soda cup flung from a passing car. The child's reaction is very telling.

Westboro is "Baptist" in name only. It has no denominational connections.

Also in Part 4, Megan Phelps gets emotional on the verge of crying when her cousin Jael pipes in to speak for her. Louie is classic in his response, "Are you the Gestapo now? You're always interjecting the doctrinal hard line at key moments when people are showing vulnerability."

During the Oscars protest, Megan pulled the same thing on me when I was interviewing her 16-year old cousin and he broke from the hard nose persona & started showing emotion.. she jumped right in & cut our comm off. That's typical cultic behavior.

Really cool programme.

Westboro Baptists have lots of plus points compared to Scientology. They don't recruit. They don't want your money. They don't make it hard to leave.

There are obviously cultish elements to it, and the effect it has on many of its members is very sad. (Not to mention the effects on bereaved families, etc.)

I don't think what they believe is very different to what's believed by many evangelical Christians -- except all the apocalyptic stuff they've recently got themselves into.

Looks like they're going to get down to a tiny 'righteous remnant' and get increasingly crazy as they get smaller and smaller.

Abusive fanatics like Fred Phelps do make it hard to leave, because their children and grandchildren are terrified of worse abuse, and of being cursed to go to hell.
