Katie Holmes was the only presenter who is in CoS.(1) Her husband Tom Cruise didn't attend; was it not wonderful enough being the date of a presenter and star of nominated series
The Kennedys? The few times Cruise did appear at past Oscars as participant, he would hide backstage, trot on for his bit, and disappear. Tom doesn't like to sit in the Emmys or Oscars audience, partly due to jokes like this:
Quote:
'Katie Holmes is in the house as well,' Lynch said. 'I would love to say something about her but I am afraid of her husband.'
(2)
Host Jane Lynch poked at Scientology after the show (3)
Barry Pepper, who won as actor in
The Kennedys, starred as Johnny Goodboy Tyler, with Travolta, in LRH's
Battlefield Earth. (4) I found no quote by him that he was a Scientologist. Does anyone know if he is a secret Scientologist?
No known CoS celeb got a direct nomination. Elisabeth Moss only got to go on stage when
Mad Men won Best Drama. Katie Holmes was part of
The Kennedys, which was nominated but didn't win as a Miniseries. CoS male actors weren't even presenters. They, especially, are aging or quitting. The only notable males under 30 are Jason Dohring and (assuming father Will Smith is a secret Scientologist) Jaden Smith, neither of whom even attended. CoS celebs' + their childrens' ages here. (5)
Meanwhile, those who had mocked Scientology in the past did well at the Emmys.
Winner Jon Stewart and nominee Stephen Colbert both have mocked Scientology repeatedly, and on the
Daily Show, in
This Week in God, Stephen tells the Xenu story (6)
Nominee Tina Fey had bantered with Steve Martin at the
2009 Oscars: "jabbing at Scientology as 'our religion ... that we made up,' " (7)
Nominee Alec Baldwin "doesn't take any sh#t from Scientologists, according to Gawker:"for Earl's creator, Greg Garcia, who referred to me as a 'psychotic', I have only one question. Why are you Scientologists always rendering these medical opinions you aren't qualified to give?" (8)
Nominee Conan O'Brien "Conan O'Brien lets Scientology respond to criticism, appearing, wearing an OTVIII banner, is Scientology's spokesperson, McCheese." (9)
Nominee Christine Baranski was in the film
Bowfinger, which spoofed Scientology. (10)
Nominee Alan Cummings had said “Smurfs are a bit like Scientologists or something.” (11)
Presenter Martin Sheen had called Scientology "the church of the Martian idiot...a complicated long joke with no punchline." (12). Admittedly, this was during a near-psychotic interview.
Presenter David Spade had mocked CoS in
The Showbiz Show with David Spade:
Scientology vs. Kabbalah (13)
Ricky Gervais, appearing not as presenter but in a video, had made a gay Scientologist joke at the
2011 Golden Globes, the probable reason he was banned from the Emmys(14)
2011 Nominee list (15) and presenters (1)
Conclusion: It's better for your career to mock Scientology than to join it.
