Three people die and he gets 6 years? Wow.

In actuality, he got 2 years... (2 years for each victim; sentence to run concurrently vs. consecutively). Luckily, he was convicted in Arizona where authorities are alot stricter than in California.

If Ray had been sentenced in a California court, he'd be looking at 2-3 months in jail despite the sentence because of all the overcrowding issues here.

The only real justice wiill be served if the families of the victims file wrongful death lawsuits against Ray, and win.

[ For reference, the original thread for the whole sordid affair prior to sentencing is here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31406 ]

Question: Could they have excluded the moonbat aspects from the trial and if so would it have stood more chance of resulting in a stronger sentence? I mean, was there some sort of consideration given to him being of a belief that he was doing some "good" at the time?

That, and the fact that those individuals who died were adults who exerted free will in attending the event that cost them their lives, therefore, the negligence was mutual.

The sentence on Ray might be overturned on appeal.. I doubt it, though. The people who signed up for Ray's course had the expectation that they were going to derive a spiritual benefit from the event; not that they were going to die there. Yet, they were adults that made that decision. It all depends on the mindset of the Arizona Court of Appeals who, no doubt, has experience hearing appeals on cases involving New Age endeavors. Arizona & New Mexico are the two states where New Age movements tend to prosper more.

It's true, the sentencing doesn't seem right. But his guru career is over. He'll never make it as a practicing guru again, thank goodness.

If CoS individuals had been found guilty in the Lisa McPherson case, I imagine light sentences would have been passed as well. But it would have been ruinous for CoS, and that would have been fine with me.

I imagine that there are true believers of this clown who will continue to follow him and he will develop a prison following. What I do think is that dumb television cult apologists like doprah will steer clear of this guy and any new secrets he may try to peddle.

Don't be so sure... Oprah drew alot of hoopla when she retired her TV talk show after 25 years to assume control over her own, dying Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

Oprah was in Fairfield, Iowa, last month at the Maharishi School (Transcendental Meditation) for a documentary on spiritual awareness to be aired on her network in January.
