Moscow court bans books Scientology founder

(Novum / AP) - MOSCOW - A Moscow court has prohibited the works of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The books would call for "extremist activity," the prosecutor said Thursday.

A court in the Siberian city of Surgut came to a similar decision in April, but was then dismissed on appeal by the Ministry of Justice.

The Scientology Church has approximately ten million followers, but in some European countries, the organization is regarded as a sect. The Orthodox Church in Russia called the Church of Scientology a "totalitarian sect".

Mod edit: Added "[Shchyolkovo court]" to the title to distinguish between this ban and the previous overturned one in Surgut.

Some english source reports:

Interfax News Agency, Russia.

Associated Press (short article)

Associated Press (longer article)

It wouldn't surpise me if this ban in the Shchyolkovo court gets overturned at some point, like the ban in Surgut did.

Also, for noob lurkers and media who may be reading this after looking at the news reports; Scientology does not have 10 million followers worldwide. It doesn't even have 1 million. Not half a million either. Likely less than 150,000

I am opposed to censorship...and can't call this a win.

If the courts can ban Hubbard's books, they can ban the works of others someone in government doesn't care for.

Yeah, I a more than a little conflicted about this decision. On the one hand, I am excited that Russia sees this cult for what it is, but on the other, limiting what can be read is something the cult does, so I cant support that type of ban.

A Russian court has found that some scientology literature distributed in Russia is illegal. The writings by L.Ron Hubbard, the founder of the church, have been ruled extremist and anti-social. RT's Sarah Firth is outside the scientology headquarters in Moscow...

They repeat the "10 million members" lie.

Here is a translation of the announcement posted on June 30, 2011 on the Prosecutor General's website:
http://genproc.gov.ru/news/news-72454/
Quote:
Books by L. Ron Hubbard declared extremist following legal action by the city prosecutor in Shchyolkovo (Moscow Region)

June 30, 2011

The prosecutor's office in Shchyolkovo (Moscow Region) has proceeded with legal action at the city court to have informational materials by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard recognized as extremist.

As was stated during the court hearing, experts concluded that the book "What Is Scientology?" and other Hubbard publications are aimed at establishing an isolated social group whose members are trained to flawlessly perform their functions, a significant part of which consists of fighting the rest of the world. The examined materials contain appeals to extremist activity, as well as abasing comments, disparaging value judgments, and negative attitudes against persons on the basis of their social identity.

The decision of the city court in Shchyolkovo (Moscow Region) fully grants the city prosecutor's motion to classify informational materials by L. Ron Hubbard as extremist. In accordance with the requirements stipulated in legislation, once the court's decision enters into legal force, the materials will be included in the federal list of extremist materials and their distribution will be prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.

The newly prohibited LRH works have not yet been included in Russia's Federal List of Extremist Materials (list in Russian). Items 632-660 are the materials added by the March 10, 2011 decision of the Surgut city court and removed on April 26, 2011 because of the April 14, 2011 reversal by the Surgut court.

At the very end of this interview (9.54) she says "We have a very strong belief in God".

Rather less strong I think than their belief in lying.

The seven items that were classified as extremist by the Shchyolkovo city court on June 30, 2011 are listed below. Their distribution is prohibited even though they do not yet appear on Russia’s online official list of extremist materials. At least one website reports that Scientology has formally filed an appeal of this court decision. Items 632-660 (essentially the basic books) were excluded from the list on April 14, 2011 when a Surgut court reversed the March 26, 2010 decision that put them there.

1-Lectures for the PTS/SP Course (nine audio cassettes and one book)
2-What is Scientology? (book)
3-Scientology Ideal Organizations. Basic hat for a member of the Advisory Council/Executive Council.* (book)
4-Scientology Ideal Organizations. What is an organization?* (book)
5-Executive Status 1 (book)
6-Organization Executive Course, Vol. 0 (book)
7-Management Series, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3 (books)

*Titles 3 and 4 are informal translations.

Translation of a Russian article posted on March 20, 2012 on the website of the Interfax news agency:
http://www.interfax-religion.ru/?act=news&div=44682
Quote:
Moscow regional court affirms legality of classifying books by L. Ron Hubbard as extremist

Distribution of these books will be prohibited in Russia

Moscow. March 20,2012. Interfax – The Moscow regional court has affirmed the legality of the decision to classify books by the founder of the "Church of Scientology", L. Ron Hubbard, as extremist.

"The Moscow regional court has upheld without change the decision rendered by the Shchyolkovo city court in response to the prosecutor’s motion to recognize as extremist books by L. Ron Hubbard," said the court’s press service representative, Anna Tyurina.

She reports it was established during the court hearing that the book "What Is Scientology?" and other booklets by L. Ron Hubbard aim to create an isolated social group whose members are trained to flawlessly perform their functions, which in large part consist of fighting the rest of the world.

According to the findings of expert analysis, these materials contain appeals to extremist activity, as well as abasing comments, disparaging value judgments, and negative attitudes against persons on the basis of their social identity.

As a result of the court decision entering into legal force, these books will be included in the federal list of extremist materials and their distribution will be prohibited in Russia.

Whether one is for or against banning extremist books, you certainly can't argue with this...

Much as I am pleased that Russian scilons are having a difficult time, I cannot see a win here. Censorship is not the way in a just society.
