I haven't heard from Happy Fun Cult in decades.

If I ever do pick up the phone and find they've tracked me down, I hope I have the presence of mind to play dumb and disavow any previous association.

"What? No, I've never been involved with the Church of Scientology, but it sounds pretty weird from the stuff I've seen on TV, so I'm not interested. You must have the wrong Marinus van der Lubbe. Happens all the time, though, with such a common name."

I think Smurf is indeed trivializing a bit here by using the telemarketing compare.
Lets say I get on a telemarketing list as I indeed have for donating to a political action group.
Now, they call what maybe once or twice a year? if I ask to be taken off the list I am, they certainly wont stalk me to a new phone number, address or name.
People feel violated and abused by COS and rightly so.
This is more akin to being stalked by an abusing ex who only wants you back to abuse you again.
It is traumatic.
The tactics COS and even the mos annoying telemarketer are light years apart.

Kind of like being molested as a kid, then getting calls from NAMBLA for the rest of your life.
