I don't pay much attention to celebrity news, but today while shopping I noticed Tom Cruise on the cover of In Touch Weekly. To pass the time in line, I read the article.

Two things caught my attention. One was that it was reported that TC has been in an extremely bad mood lately. Apparently he's not his old outgoing, friendly self. He's very serious, not social or talkative and seems pissed about something. This was reported from the set of one of his new movies called Oblivion. Also reported from that set are several "rules" that Tom laid out in his contract. This one caught my eye: it said (paraphrased) no one in the crew or cast is to speak to Tom, unless he addresses them first.

WOW. That is the same exact rule that the RPFers must live by. They may speak to no one (outside the RPF) unless someone speaks to them first.

And I wonder if TC's bad mood these days is connected to what is happening in scientology.

Sorry no link to the magazine, I couldn't find it online.

Well, no wonder. Imagine how very, very tired he gets being asked "Is it true you believe in Lord Xenu and the volcanoes?"*

*I still think that's a great name for a band: "Lord Xenu and the Volcanoes"

The article will only be available in print. They do sometimes post a small snippet at http://www.intouchweekly.com but not on this article.

However, you tend to get 2nd hand reports at other celeb sites. Celebitchy.com is often quite good for those who don't want to be seen buying the ITW magazine ;) and usually goes a little further with the background reporting....

Katie Holmes “is no longer intimidated” by Tom Cruise, who is pitching an on-set fit
Celebitchy.com 6th April 2012

Quote:
Katie Holmes’ love for fug booties knows no boundaries, and she’s wearing them in every one of these photos except for the one above, which was taken at the Vanity Fair Oscar party and was the last time that she and husband Tom Cruise were photographed together. These days, Tom’s been very busy shooting Oblivion in New Orleans, and In Touch reports that Katie is “happy on her own” in New York City while hanging out with Suri. This comes in sharp contrast to last summer when Katie and Suri were in Miami almost the entire time while Tom was filming Rock of Ages. They swam and ate ice cream and watched Tom rock out on a balcony at their hotel. Now? After five years of marriage, Katie is allegedly much happier when overbearing Tom is not underfoot. Did someone have a contract renegotiation?

Katie Holmes used to be a near-constant presence on the sets of Tom Cruise’s films. But while Tom has been in New Orleans for weeks shooting Oblivion, Katie has barely visited her husband.

Holed up in NYC with their daughter, Suri, Katie has been putting distance between herself and her husband, according to the insider. And Tom, 49, will have to get used to it. The insider says that after half a decade as his wife, Katie, 33, is no longer intimidated by him. “Reaching her fifth anniversary gave Katie the confidence to walk away when Tom acts up,” the insider says.

And he’s been acting up a lot lately, putting pressure on Katie to have another baby. Though he’s desperate for them to conceive again before his 50th birthday in July, she has mixed feelings and refuses to give into Tom’s pressure to have another baby. “They’ve been fighting about it for a month now,” the insider reveals. And while Tom has been clearly unhappy, Katie is no longer rushing to his side. “It’s easier for her just to avoid him.”

[From In Touch, print edition, April 16, 2012]

Meanwhile, In Touch also reports that Tom is feeling very dejected that his wife is no longer doing everything he wants precisely when he wants it, so he’s taking it out on the Oblivion cast and crew:

Tom is not his usual self. Normally friendly Tom has seemed “very, very serious,” says a set insider.

Tom’s acting like a diva. He’s taking out his anger on staffers by making them stay mum while an insider says his co-star Morgan Freeman has no such set rule.

    Tom’s Ridiculous Rider:

No talking to Mr. Cruise unless he addresses the cast/crew first.

No cell phones or portable electronic devices with photo capabilities allowed on set (no iPads!)

On-set eating or drinking is only allowed during specified break times.

Tardiness can result in immediate dismissal.

Also, here's a previous OCMB media thread from Nov 2011 covering a report that Katie Holmes is not happy about her hubby doing the movie "Oblivion" [aka "Horizons"] due to possible scientology inferences (and all the crazy shit that the media will stir up about that). Release date of Oblivion/Horizons is currently set at 19 April 2013
Rumour: Katie begging Tom not to do "thetan" scifi movie: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=44224
In that same thread there's also a report of another scifi movie starring Cruise, allegedly to begin shooting at the end of this year. Called "All You Need Is Kill" it has been pegged as a sort of scifi "groundhog day" movie plot but in an alien war, ... erm... apparently.

In other news from the In Touch Weekly magazine website,Tom Cruise apparently wears a special laser therapy helmet 25 mins a day in order to stimulate hair growth (according to "a friend"). I assume they mean that it is for his head.

Howard Stern used to have a comedian on the show who echoed the rule about not talking to Tom. I believe this was for Jerry Maguire.

This story was unfairly attributed to Tom Cruise.. anyone who has worked as a TV or movie extra (background actors) are provided sets of rules they must follow when on set..the producers demand strict adherence to these rules because sometimes an extra will be hired, that goes nuts when they see a movie star, and on-set professionalism is thrown out the window, causing unnecessary & expensive delays to filming.

Extras are ordered not to speak to or acknowledge actors on the set, unless the actor speaks to them, or they've been placed in a scene where they have to speak to the actor. Actors, before filming, are often "in character" preparing for a scene, and the last thing they need is some extra running up to them asking for an autograph, which is a huge no-no anyways. When walking from a holding area to a scene, they are ordered "eyes down" and not to look at the actors.

In the late 80s, I worked as a security supervisor on the film, 'Come See The Paradise', starring Dennis Quaid. I spent alot of time in the company of Dennis and his then-girlfriend, Meg Ryan, who was in Hawaii filming a movie with Tom Hanks, but flew in on weekends to be with Dennis. I fired alot of extras & some crew members for violating on-set rules. If any actor felt an extra was looking at them in a manner that interrupted their concentration in preparation for a scene, that extra was fired.

That's generally true for extras. But according to the report, TC applied it to all cast and crew. If you worked in the industry Smurf you must know that not all actors have the same level of ego. Tom's rules would be considered extreme. Here's an example- when Brad Pitt sent a memo to the cast and crew instructing them not to speak to his friend George Clooney (as a practical joke) it messed him all up, because he doesn't have that "rule".
