My comment: Like Rebecca, I have claimed I was "from" my birth state rather than from Florida. Years of comparing peoples' reactions taught me that Northerners think Floridians are there to cook their restaurant meals, make their hotel-room beds, pick their oranges, shoot each other in Miami, capture dog-eating alligators, and do "weird-news" things. So, I can sympathize that like many people, Rebecca is spinning her story to add glamour and subract Florida.

I doubt that she did much in LA besides maybe visit her brother at Hubbard College of Management, and fend off pleas to join Sea Org. If anyone knows how she met Jenna Elfman, please let me know. Obviously it was a Scientology link.

I believe Rebecca's and her father Dr. David Minkoff made a plan for her to get out of Clearwater and not join Sea Org. Dr. M. was likely the go-to doctor who would treat the Sea Org injuries without raising a fuss about worker safety. Dr. M. may have been appalled by the poor condition of Sea Org workers needing emergency care. It is hard to miss gum disease, overwork, and exhaustion. The Lisa McPherson horror was the climax, and the end, of Dr. M.'s role as medical safety net for Flag neglect. The scandal raged from 1995 to 1997, when Rebecca was about 15 to 17. I think it steeled him to get Rebecca even out of Clearwater, going to Gibbs High School, far south in St. Petersburg. Gibbs has the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, so there was lots of creative work in costumes and more for the theatrical performances. But mainly nobody at Gibbs knew who Rebecca or her Dad was, and she could at least get that high school diploma to have some chance at a career.
Once she got that internship, her path in real life opened up to her. I believe few would join Sea Org if they had as sweet a PAID internship as Rebecca got.
It may be that CoS rewarded Dr. M. and his children, for Dr. M. not speaking out against the Church of Scientology, except for the necessary mild criticism about Lisa's condition. CoS members bought overpriced vitamins from Dr. M., helping keep his fall-back clinic in business. Look at the support for son Uri - a partnership with a real software whiz Paul McDaniel. Look at the support for Rebecca - Jenna Elfman, Craig Taylor and his doting CEO Christina Kumi, plus other CoS celebs buying and praising her handbags.* Gavin Bellour, a Scientology actor, MARRIED her. All these things happen in a web (a spider web, with sticky threads) of tribal loyalties.

It's an odd situation - she has been quiet about Scientology for years, but she owes her career and her marriage to it.

CoS celebrities flocked to Rebecca Minkoff's 2011 LA Store Opening.* They posed in front of a sign "Thank you, Rebecca Minkoff, for donating 10% of tonight's proceedings to Artists for Human Rights." Artists for Human Rights' president is Anne Archer, well-known Scientologist actress and mother of Celebrity Centre's president Tommy Davis. Many of AHR's events are held at the Celeb Centre. Ironically, Celeb Center staff are abused, exploited, and even unlawfully detained in the Scientology's punitive work-prison, the Rehabilitation Project Force. AHR has in the past thanked the Church of Scientology's Human Rights Office for its support.

Since Rebecca was born in 1980, she would have done her bat mizbah around 1993. Quite a busy year, since she also took the Student Hat Course* in 1983. Is she starting to distance herself from Scientology? What happened to the rescue-by-older-brother story? The Minkoff name is Jewish, which appeals to women of that faith. She and her brother chose Ben Minkoff to name her men's bags, after their grandfather, and mentioned that both Rebecca and Ben are Biblical names. Could she be redefining herself?

Did she get the Deborah Cook memo? Is she so big, with so many non-CoS celebs buying her wares, that she can dare walk away from CoS? Moses is a popular topic for bar and bat mitzvah speeches. Could Rebecca, like Moses, lead her buddies away from an overbearing and evil regime?

Rebecca Minkoff was on Fashion Police covering the Met Gala. This show repeats this week on E! Cable, if you want to see her. She laughed at the jokes but was low-key and serious, and dressed in a subdued black. I hope she uses her growing fame powers for good, to lead people away from rather than into Scientology.

It's an error to assume that every public Scientologist that has gained some fame & celebrity is using it to promote the cult.

I know a number of Scilons, a couple who are actors, who remain Scientologists in name only because they don't want to bat the hornet's nest which detracts from their careers. They take basic courses every so often to keep the cult regges off their backs. I've met Rebecca & her husband Gavin. They're not out promoting Scientology, but building their careers.

If you check the Completions Lists of some of the young up-and-coming Scilons, you'll notice that they've taken basic courses, but there seems to be no desire to "go up the Bridge."

It's a tough situation for 2nd generation Scientologists, especially in recent times, with the cult clamping down on it's members, and taking "disconnection" to a whole new level. It's causing non-active Scilons to go about their business and avoid anything controversial, so not to cause upheaval to family relationships.

I agree a lot are unenthused, but it's telling how often the second generation choose each other as business and creative partners, marriage partners, and teachers for their children. They have a strong bond, or maybe they fear divorce or business disaster if they link with a non-Scientologist. The LA public schools are underfunded and full of non-English-speakers, yet the third generation may not fit in with the Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, or other private schools. I can see how, from their bubble, the Scientology schools look familiar and "safe." The trouble is, if the third generation is raised together in the same damned bubble, they'll be trapped, too.

I wish the whole second and third generation would just defect en masse. The issue is, what religion, when the second generation's grandparents were from many religious traditions. If there is a horrible scandal or several defections of popular clique leaders, I can imagine Marty moving to LA and scooping up hundreds. Then we have to hope Marty's group doesn't practice fraud, extortion, and disconnection.
