There's a great article linked up at Drudge.

It refers to the group as a cult in the trailer.

It refers to Tony Ortega at the Village Voice (one of the leading critics on the cult)

Ultimately, this is more waves of negativity headed towards the cult.

Bwahahaha.

Couldn't come at a better time. I just read on ESMB that there's a blind gossip story about another celebrity leaving. It's like the ship is taking fire, going down, and even the rats are jumping.

It appears Anderson has a great understanding of L. Ron.

That certainly looks to be a must see movie. Hoffman certainly seems to be channeling LRH -- I'd venture a guess that he looked at any available film footage and listened to lots of tapes of the old man. A nitpick, but I would have liked to see him with hair dyed red for the part -- that would have been a nice touch.

I'm grateful PSH didn't do Hubbard's "Ahhh, ya see, in this sector of the guhLAXy" nasal voice because that would have been annoying to sit through for the film's length.
It's clear enough who this is without ascots and Kool cigarettes; it's perhaps more powerful storytelling if Hoffman works to make his guru more persuasive sounding than I would have found a note-for-note LRH impression. Besides, there's more than one con-man out there against whom the public could use inoculation. Hubbard specifically is becoming less and less relevant (yay!).

Is there any historical basis for the Freddie Sutton character that Joaquin Phoenix plays?

Is there a particular individual represented by that character or is he a compilation or a complete whole cloth creation?

I have a feeling those questions may go unanswerable until after the movie's release.

He's like part of the young Hubbard, disturbing, immature and full of flaws.

Mark Headley's comment on the parallels between the history of Scientology and the movie script does not mention a specific historic parallel to Joaquin Phoenix's character.

The trailer makes it seem as if the character could be a dramatic vehicle around which the effects of Scientology on its followers, the relationship of the "Master" to his disciples as well as Hubbard's paranoia against the scientific/psychiatric establishment crystallize.

But maybe there is more to it... I'm really looking forward to seeing the film.

There was a brief shot of Freddie Sutton out in the street passing out fliers. Oh, yeah. I've done that for $cientology and I can relate.
