The "volcano" part of the story, according to this website was influenced by Hubbard's stay in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.
QUOTE:
when Hubbard was in Las Palmas during 1967 at the
inception of the Sea Org. This letter is now in custody of the court. In
it Hubbard tells his wife:
"I'm drinking lots of rum and popping pinks and greys."
END QUOTE from
http://www.xenu.net/archive/OTIII-schol ... or-dts.txt

Hubbard could have bought Marvel's reprints of old comics when he returned to London in November 1967. Do any Brits know if British shops (for example in Picadilly Circus) were selling old and new comics then?

Thanks, CoS, for the LRH chronology -
QUOTE: (1967) In November he travels to England and accepts delivery of the 3,200-ton vessel Royal Scotman. END QUOTE from
http://www.wise.org/lrh/chron/chron10.htm

It would be ironic if one of the few flatly truthful CoS sentences about LRH was a clue to plagiarism.

It would be the greatest of all ironies if Marvel ended up suing the CoS for copyright infringement. Also a great way to get the Xenu story out in the public's face!

I love it. Keep up the good work D.C.

The source of the DC-8 reference in OT3: LRH must have flown in a DC-8 numerous times. There were updated versions of the DC-8 during the 1960's, and it was THE big new jet of the era.
QUOTE:
Between the 50 and 62 series the DC-8 saw services across the world in every continent...
The jet was used on trans-Atlantic services until the widebodies came along in the 1970s... END QUOTE from

Where did the H-bomb reference come from? In July 1967 China exploded its first H-bomb. Even though I was just a kid, I remember it being all over the newspapers and people talking about it.

I should have said earlier that the Canary Islands (where Las Palmas is located) have volcanoes as a major tourist attraction.

So maybe we don't have to find a comic book with volcanoes, H-bombs, and DC-8's. L.Ron was influenced by all these in real life in 1967.

Overpopulation - QUOTE:
In an article published in New Scientist in December 1967... Ehrlich asserted that the battle to feed humanity is over and predicted that somewhere between 1970 and 1985 the world will undergo vast famines.
...Ehrlich distilled ...his lectures and articles on the population explosion in The Population Bomb, 1968.

END QUOTE from
http://www.umsl.edu/~biology/icte/WEAre ... rlich.html

My comment: The Internation Herald-Tribune certainly should have covered this troubling doomsday prediction. A touristy place like the Canary Islands gets that newspaper.
Also, the "lectures and articles" phrase above implies that Ehrlich was preaching doom for months before the start of 1968.

ANOTHER QUOTE:
... November 20, 1967, a Census Clock hung in ... the Department of Commerce Building, Washington, DC, indicating that the population of the United States was 200 million.END QUOTE from

http://www.adelphiasophism.com/goddess/gs25.html

The U.S. population hitting 200 million was BIG news, I remember, inspiring speculation about overpopulation.

Don_Carlo et al,

I have a friend on the faculty at U of Windsor. Will see if this friend can come up with anything relative/relevant. Might take a few days/weeks, but you never know.

Fantastic thread Atheist, thanks for starting it. Wouldn't it just be the icing on the cake, the chink in the armor, the Achilles heel.

Just FYI, in the meantime, Achilles, the Heel

OT3's "implant" idea could have come from the wealth of implant and mind-control stories in the 60's:
* The movie Fantastic Voyage in 1966 by Asimov (a true sci-fi genius and writer of ~500 books)

Various Dr. Who tales:
* Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion Of Earth (1964)
..the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his friends find that the Earth of the 22nd century is in the grip of the Daleks, who turn humans into mind-controlled Robomen...END QUOTE

* The movie Doctor Who and the Daleks (1965)
The Doctor (Peter Cushing) and his companions must help the humans of a distant planet overcome their murderous metal dictators, the Daleks.

* Doctor Who: The War Machines(1966)
The Doctor (William Hartnell) has finally managed to land the TARDIS in 20th-century London, but ...WOTAN, an experimental super-computer, is controlling men's minds and preparing to take over the planet.

Dr. Who tales are from
http://scifi-fantasymovies.com/dr_who_daleks.shtml

More prosaically, breast implants were invented in 1966 and 1967!

Bingo again
QUOTE: The concept of implants is an outgrowth of the modern UFO craze which began in 1947. In the 1960s came reports of alien abductions, events now understood to consist largely of waking dreams, hypnosis-induced fantasies, and hoaxes. Implants seem to have begun with the alleged 1967 abduction of a Massachusetts woman, Betty Andreasson, who described a tiny spiked ball that had supposedly been inserted up her nose.

Not ever being a Scientologists I have only read OT III never tried to accept it. Any of the members that have gone through it. It would be helpful if we had a list of all of the unique aspects of Xenu's story listed out. Then we could assign probable sources for the idea.

And check out any copyrights which may have existed at the time, or may still apply. Great sleuthing you guys.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Question: The "implants" under dicussion here seem to be related only to the physical. There would be, to my mind, an equally compelling argument that those who believe in "implants" may not be seeing them soley or at all in a physical universe/context, i.e., they are "seeing" them as figments of hallucinations, dreams, or paranoid delusions. Or just plain old fantasies.

Keep up the sleuthing; it could well turn out that the scientology guru, L. Ron Hubbard, borrowed even from this UFO craze while piecing together his scientology "tech." What craziness. So the sci-fi genre continued to offer him a "source" from which he would cull ideas for his ultimate "religion."

Hey, wouldn't he have had something to say about the hoola hoop? Spinning BTs off your body or something? I'm surprised he didn't cash in on that too.

Let's see. We've got Freudian theory, Buddhist teachings, Hindu teachings, pop psychology, maybe a bit of "Satanism," and the science fiction UFO genre - the basis for the "methodology" of the tech of scientology. Interesting melange.

I remember reading something, where Hubbard predicted the end of the world around 1985, something silly, like...
... We only have until 1985 to clear as many people as possible, so hop to it...

anyone else remember this?

ROFLMAO, DC! Thanks for all the GREAT work!
