I've just watched a copy of the DVD for the recent OT Summit where David Miscaviage introduced all the newest updates of the basic books. Evidently, the books had been printed since LRH wrote them with off-source additions, unauthorized deletions, etc.
Has anyone else seen this and did it blow any charge for you? Do you see a possibility that the situation might improve to the point where you might rejoin or has the damage been too much, as in my case? |

Thanks very much for that link. Fabulous discussion and perfect questions. I was asking myself the same things while watching the tightly scripted presentation. I also wondered if the audience had been briefed beforehand to jump up as a unified group to applaud the books. Wasn't Kristie repugnant in her pea-soup-colored dress? Guess she didn't get the memo that everyone was going to be wearing muted colors so as not to outshine DM.
I don't visit this site often, which explains why my #posts is low. Have been too busy with my photography and remodeling/painting the house. Will try to do better. |

Don't even sweat it, dude! I don't post very often either. It is the QUALITY of your posts, not the quantity that counts. There have been a few posters (Pitbull comes to mind) who made LOTS of posts, but seldom had anything meaningful to say.
THAT having been said, when I was still in (I left in late 1999/early 2000), one of the things that constantly bugged me was the push to buy the "latest and greatest" Hubbard releases! Long before the latest "basics" push, EVERY time the LRH library was revised (often with just a new cover, or some new definitions), EVERY Scientologist was regged HARD to buy all of them NOW!! Your ethics and sanity were always questioned if you did not empty your bank account on demand.
This was a MAJOR factor in my waking up and getting the fuck out! There is no other "religion" or organization on the planet as obssesed with money, stats and constant revisions as they are. I mean, how can something be so damn great, if the original versions weren't shit to begin with? (Well, they AREN'T, but that's besides the point, LOL!!)

The DVD includes synchronized video clips, probably the same or similar to what played on TV and video screens to the live audience.
Before DM takes the stage, the audience is treated with the same induction Hubbard gave his staff on 5 September 1971, at the start of his lecture titled A Talk On a Basic Qual.
First we see a Star wars hyperspace effect, which down-steps into a galactic cloud emitting the voice of L. Ron Hubbard.

Thanks for posting the link. As a newcomer, I've tried to read as much of the board as I can, but there's a lot of material and it's difficult to do randomly. I appreciate when an 'old timer' points out a 'best of OCMB'.
I watched the entirety of Mr. Misavige's sales pitch and was appalled by his assignments of blame. In the organizations I've headed, it was my job to take the blame and the heat for mistakes. Unless I was taught incorrectly, that IS the role of the leader.

Many thanks for making the video available, Alert. It shows, among other things, David Miscavige's intention and effort to use hypnotic techniques to sell Scientology materials. Because of his deceptive and unconscionable actions to influence viewers, among other reasons, I believe it is in the public interest that the DVD Golden Age of Knowledge for Eternity be scrutinized from beginning to end and that every possible thing be done within maximum fair use parameters to get it viewed by as many wogs or Scientologists as can be reached.IANAL.
This Flag pamphlet advertising the "Basics" lists the prices Scientology charges for the materials DM is hypnotizing people to buy in his eventomercial.

I finally got through all the DVD links posted above. Here's some thoughts...
DM is probably correct that many of the books from the 1950s suffered from horrendiously bad editing. But that begs two questions: Why were they so bad, and why did it take 50 years to correct them?
1) Why were they so bad? DM places the blame on transcribers and editors that were squirills, SPs, or just incompetent idiots. But as the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you, foll me twice, shame on me. You have to explain why LRH books were mangled over and over again, despite the "fact" that the author was supposedly describing the most empowering tech ever "discovered."
Well, with the exception of DMSMH, which was published by an established publishing hourse, these works were more "self-published," meaning that LRH hired people to do the transcribing, editing and typesetting, then paid a print house to do the printing. He likely had people he hired off the street do these jobs, not professionals from the publishing industry.
As DM described (and I have no reason to doubt this), most of the books were dictated into a dictaphone or tape recorder, then handed over to a transcriber to be typed. Does anyone think that the recordings were clearly labled with the chapter order? Imagine the hapless editors trying to make sense of a pile of transcripts not in a clear order!
DM shows several fascinating images of manuscripts with LRH's edits on them, but keep in mind that of the most recent LRH proof was lost, the "corrected" version may actually be an older version, that LRH wished to be updated.
2) Why did it take 50 years to be corrected?
The clue to that is the assumptions DM makes throught: Everything LRH does is gold, his word is perfect, and everyone else is an idiot. I don't know about the 1950s, but from the 1960s onward, anyone that ever suggested there was something "off" in these books was first told they had misunderstood words, and if they persisted in saying that after word clearing, they could be sent to ethics or worse for invalidating LRH. Afterall, it says at the beginning of each book that the ONLY reason anyone could find the material confusing was because of misunderstood words. The possibility of poor editing could never be considered.
So no doubt many people noticed that these books were a confused mess, but no one dared say so, - at least not until DM did, and even then he clearly blamed other people in the publishing processes, and certainly not the author, who clearly couldn't be bothered to proof his own books before they were published, and regarded as "natter" any negative comment made about them thereafter.
I have to admit that I haven't read these books a lot, but I am familiar with this from a much later book. When I read the first edition of Battlefield Earth in 1979, about half way through there is an incident which is described in two consecutive chapters in almost the same words. It was obviously something from an early draft which was not removed in a later draft. I was having doubts about Scientology at the time and my thought was that the editors & typesetters would not dare "alter-is" the master's work by changing anything, so the error was published. I wonder if it is still there. I wonder if DM will publish a Golden Age verison of BE and blame the Sea Org flunkie assigned to edit BE who was too afraid of RPF to properly do his job.
While I found DM's presentation slick, the content of the books is still LRH's half baked theories. It is not a record of discovery, but a record of LRH putting forth the theory that if you remove from the mind of a person all of the disfunctional thoughts that hold him back, you will have a new kind of super-capable person he called a "clear" or "operating thetan."
He said he was making clears in 1950, but he wasn't, so he kept trying. Everything "new" in Scientology from 1951 through the Golden Age of Knowledge for Eternity is simply excuses why the old tech didn;t work, and yet another attempt to make it work.

Good catch. It doesn't seem that the banners have anything to do with what DM is saying in his speach.
The helicopters look like big bugs.

Scientology promo includes objects, colors, and other devices per Scientology marketing tech in order to evoke desired emotional responses. DM reinforced that confusion in many other ways throughout the video, including vague images on moving screens, quickly scrolling books, meaningless facts and stats. DM "created the want" for his new Basic Books as the remedy for the confusion.

Scientologists learn to constantly scan themselves and others for confusions in their training material, in-life situations, etc., which they then solve in various ways, such as with word clearing or Ethics.
I'm including the formula hoping it'll help to shed some more light on DM's "confusion technique."

The Order Versus Disorder checklist (see "Order Versus Disorder") lists all the points that need to be checked for and handled in order to get the basics of organization in on an individual or area, and all these points are checked for and handled as part of the Expanded Confusion Formula. Each point is checked and any handling needed for that point is done right away before continuing with the checklist.
5. Repeat step 1 (Locational).
* A Locational is done by walking around with the person, both indoors and out-of-doors, using the commands: "Look at that ( indicated object ). Thank you," using objects such as a chair, a tree, a car, the floor, the ceiling, a house, etc. The person running the Locational would point at the object each time. It is simply run until the person visibly brightens up and has a cognition.
Where a condition of Confusion exists, all these steps can be done to handle the condition. On the other hand, if someone has a huge win on the first steps and comes out of Confusion, one would not force him to do all the other steps and keep him in the condition when he has actually come out of it. He would still handle the points on Order Versus Disorder, but this must not be used to keep someone in a condition of Confusion and refuse to upgrade him when he has come out of the condition.
The purpose of the formula is to get someone located in his present time environment, knowing where he is and where the various things he needs to operate with are, so that he is no longer in a condition of Confusion.
For someone who is actually in a condition of Confusion this can be a huge win, and it will start him on the road to Power. It can be a turning point in his life.
The formula is complete when the person has made it out of Confusion, knows where he is, has established order in his area and knows the basics of how to operate out of that area.
When this end result has been achieved, the person will be ready to be upgraded and move on up through the other conditions. The fact that he has not completed all steps of the formula must not be used as a reason to keep someone in Confusion when he has honestly made it out of that condition.
Lack of this condition sometimes brings about an assignment of Treason in which the person cannot actually find out that he is and so occasionally does not make it on up the conditions.
Many more persons are in this condition than is generally realized.
With the expansion of the formula, anybody who is in this condition can really make it out of Confusion and on up through the other conditions.
Doing Confusion fully and properly gives one a very firm footing so that he can make it up the conditions and be truly successful in his area.
Group Confusion Formula:
Correct application of the condition formulas by a group is vital to its survival and expansion, and this includes the lower conditions and their formulas.
A group in the condition of Confusion will be in a state of random motion; its staff will be stumbling around and running into walls, with no real production. When such an organization or group is assigned Confusion, it does not apply the formula "FIND OUT WHERE YOU ARE." This is a first dynamic formula.
The formula to be applied by a group which is in the condition of Confusion is:
FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE.
Once this formula is complete, the group would apply the Treason Formula and continue up the conditions, eventually arriving at Power. |

Having total Scientology is having total power. DM claims there is now, finally, Total Scientology. He's mad, but this is nevertheless a real threat that needs public attention, analysis and action.
One of the Basic Books is Scientology 0-8, which contains The Axioms of Scientology. The axioms are considered and used as the foundation of Scientology knowledge, and conform to Hubbard's personal and group philosophy of Total Power.

Axiom 27 An actuality can exist for one individually, but when it is agreed with by others it can be said to be a reality.
The anatomy of reality is contained in isness, which is composed of as-isness and alter-isness. An isness is an apparency, not an actuality. The actuality is as-isness altered so as to obtain a persistency.
Unreality is the consequence and apparency of the practice of not-isness.

In other words, anything which is persisting must contain a “lie” so that the original consideration is not completely duplicated.

Axiom 31 Goodness and badness, beautifulness and ugliness are alike considerations and have no other basis than opinion.
Axiom 32 Anything which is not directly observed tends to persist.

Axiom 34 Any isness, when altered by force, tends to persist.
Axiom 35 The ultimate truth is a static.
A static has no mass, meaning, mobility, no wavelength, no time no location in space, no space. This has the technical name of “basic truth.”
Axiom 36 A lie is a second postulate, statement or condition designed to mask a primary postulate which is permitted to remain.
EXAMPLES:
Neither truth nor a lie is a motion or alteration of a particle from one position to another.
A lie is a statement that a particle having moved did not move, or a statement that a particle, not having moved, did move.
The basic lie is that a consideration which was made was not made or that it was different.
Axiom 37 When a primary consideration is altered but still exists, persistence is achieved for the altering consideration.
All persistence depends on the basic truth, but the persistence is of the altering consideration, for the basic truth has neither persistence nor impersistence.
Axiom 38 1. Stupidity is the unknownness of consideration.
2. Mechanical definition: Stupidity is the unknownness of time, place, form and event.
1. Truth is the exact consideration.
2. Truth is the exact time, place, form and event.
Thus we see that failure to discover truth brings about stupidity.
Thus we see that the discovery of truth would bring about an as-isness by actual experiment.
Thus we see that an ultimate truth would have no time, place, form or event.
Thus, then, we perceive that we can achieve a persistence only when we mask a truth.
Lying is an alteration of time, place, event or form.
Lying becomes alter-isness, becomes stupidity.
(The blackness of cases is an accumulation of the case’s own or another’s lies.)
Anything which persists must avoid as-isness. Thus, anything, to persist, must contain a lie.
Axiom 39 Life poses problems for its own solution.
Axiom 40 Any problem, to be a problem, must contain a lie. If it were truth, it would unmock.
An “unsolvable problem” would have the greatest persistence. It would also contain the greatest number of altered facts. To make a problem, one must introduce alter-isness.
Axiom 41 That into which alter-isness is introduced becomes a problem.
Axiom 42 Matter, energy, space and time persists because it is a problem.
It is a problem because it contains alter-isness.
Axiom 43 Time is the primary source of untruth.
Time states the untruth of consecutive considerations.
Axiom 44 Theta, the static, has no location in matter, energy, space or time, but is capable of consideration.
Axiom 45 Theta can consider itself to be placed, at which moment it becomes placed, and to that degree a problem.
Axiom 46 Theta can become a problem by its considerations, but then becomes mest.
Mest is that form of theta which is a problem.
Axiom 47 Theta can resolve problems.
Axiom 48 Life is a game wherein theta as the static solves the problems of theta as mest.
Axiom 49 To solve any problem it is only necessary to become theta, the solver, rather than theta, the problem.
Axiom 50 Theta as mest must contain considerations which are lies.
Axiom 51 Postulates and live communication not being mest and being senior to mest can accomplish change in mest without bringing about a persistence of mest. Thus auditing can occur.
Axiom 52 Mest persists and solidifies to the degree that it is not granted life.
Axiom 53 A stable datum is necessary to the alignment of data.
Axiom 54 A tolerance of confusion and an agreed-upon stable datum on which to align the data in a confusion are at once necessary for a sane reaction on the eight dynamics. (This defines sanity.)
Axiom 55 The cycle of action is a consideration. Create, survive, destroy, the cycle of action accepted by the genetic entity, is only a consideration which can be changed by the thetan making a new consideration or different action cycles.
Axiom 56 Theta brings order to chaos.
COROLLARY: Chaos brings disorder to theta.
Axiom 57 Order manifests when communication, control and havingness are available to theta.
DEFINITIONS:
Communication: the interchange of ideas across space.
Control: positive postulating, which is intention, and the execution thereof.
Havingness: that which permits the experience of mass and pressure.
Axiom 58 Intelligence and judgment are measured by the ability to evaluate relative importances.
COROLLARY: The ability to evaluate importances and unimportances is the highest faculty of logic.
COROLLARY: Identification is a monotone assignment of importance.
COROLLARY: Identification is the inability to evaluate differences in time, location, form, composition or importance.
The above is a summary of states of being which can be used to create, cause to persist, or destroy.
Having agreed to the mechanics and retaining the agreements, the thetan can yet make innumerable postulates which by their contradiction and complexity, create, cause to persist, and destroy human behavior. |

| The old books were wildly successful decades ago, and almost nobody new is buying the new books. So it couldn't have been the flaws in the books that are causing CoS's decline. It was the fraud, extortion, poor service, bullying, failure to deliver promises, disconnection and exposure of criminal activity. No rewritten book will fix THAT. |
