This attack has become headline news and the public response has been strongly anti-scientology.

Quote:
A NOTORIOUS group of internet users known as "Anonymous" have taken down a Scientology website after declaring war on the church.

Anonymous, whose membership included hackers, has begun a "third wave" of attacks in the week-old operation dubbed “Project Chanology”.

The group has already flooded Scientology servers, preventing access to at least one of the church's websites.

Chief executive of the 7safe.com security firm Alan Phillips told Sky News in the UK that the group may have used a denial of service attack to take the Scientology website out of service.

“It would appear, that in this case, they’ve taken down the website by using a denial of service attack, where they basically fire lots and lots of different bits of information into the one place so… no one else can access it,” Mr Phillips said.

A spokesman for the Church of Scientology told NEWS.com.au that the church was not the "right target" for these kinds of attacks.

"These types of people have got some wrong information about us," the spokesman said.

The group also claimed to have downloaded many of the church’s “secret documents” – which can now be downloaded from popular file-sharing sites.

Anonymous said their actions will not be restricted to their websites, with protests outside Scientology buildings being organised throughout the US.

Earlier today, a message about a possible attack point on the main Scientology website appeared on a Project Chanology webpage.

“We found the direct IP (Internet Protocol address) to www.scientology.org, not protected,” the message said.

Today Anonymous released an updated “Open letter to Scientology”, following its declaration of war last week.

“By now you have certainly become aware of us and our actions,” the statement said.

“We have commenced our assault upon your institution and would like to take this moment to enlighten you.

"We are Anonymous, you might know think of us as merely a hacker group, but we are much more.

“We are the protectors of knowledge, we are the 'internet hate machine'.”

In a message posted on YouTube earlier this week, the group said it was tired of the methods used by the church to stem criticism of Scientology.

The church is famous for vigorously attacking its critics, often taking legal action against them or attempting to undermine their credibility.

“Anonymous has therefore decided your organisation should be destroyed, for the good of your followers, for the good of mankind and for our own enjoyment,” a synthesised voice said in the clip.

“We shall systematically expel you from the internet and proceed to dismantle the Church of Scientology in its current form.”

According to respected technology magazine Wired, Anonymous usually focused on bullying and downloading pirated software and files.

“The group usually amuses itself by stealing passwords to downloading sites and finding ways to harass online communities that its members disdain,” a blog on the website said.

"They were last seen on (Wired security blog) Threat Level when a Los Angeles Fox News affiliate ran a story that hilariously implied the group's arsenal included exploding vans.”

These people need a PR, for sure Wink

Seriously, calling themselves "An internet hate group" isn't too smart.

I've spoken to a few of them, who were very nice. But this was what I meant in my post to them:

ARE THEY GOING TO EFFECTIVELY EXPOSE SCIENTOLOGY'S ABUSES,
OR
WILL THEY JUST GET PRESS FOR THEIR OWN?

So far, I see the latter. It takes attention OFF of Scientology's abuses.
(There was one on Channel 9 tonight that did the same. A man from UCLA
said "The hackers say they're doing it as Scientology stops free speech, however they hacking their web sites does the same thing". d'oh! DOH!
Did they not think of this,
or is it they just don't care?

The people *I* spoke to (who called me) all told me they only did
legal things, and they wanted very much to expose the abuses of Scientology.

I hope they evolve on this, quickly.

My best alien

So now the headlines are about internet hackers and not about the bad things that scientology does.
What an achievment. Rolling Eyes

Tory, while I agree with you completely, some observations do need to be made.

It has been established in common law that "Freedom of Speech" does not include defamation, and RFW is riddled with defamatory statements, as you would know better than I. None of as have the resources to challenge the CofS on this, and this would certainly be true of Generation Y, to which I suspect, Anonymous are members. All they have, are their internet skills. We all went through this period at another time. Their world is not our world, their language is not our language, their use of "hate group" doesn't mean the same as it means to you and me. I really do suspect that they are better informed about the CofS than many of the posters on OCMB. Counsel them by all means but, may I suggest, with respect.

Regards, your mate David.

Because many people are unaware of the esoteric reality, they do not understand Legion, they do not understand Anonymous. The occult name of Legion is Chronozon the MOB.

Legion is, paradoxically, Scientology's own Body Thetans and Clusters of Body Thetans. Anonymous is Scientology's own Reactive Mind. Anonymous is the end of OT VII and the Beginning of OT VIII: I now know who I AM not and and and ready to find out who I AM. Anonymous proves Hubbard's final confession that he finally never knew who he really was amidst his muddled identity of lies, stolen valor, author, dictator, Satanist, drug addict, and sexually molested child. This why Hubbard died screaming for someone to come and get his BT's off him: He wanted to know his true self before he died and he never did. Instead, Hubbard died anonymously in his Bluebird motorhome while pumped full of the psych drug Vistaril. In a final bit of ignominy, the Coroner photographed Hubbard's bloated and corpulent ass so as to document the many needle marks on it. The Coroner photographed Hubbard's naked corpse and took its fingerprints in order to ensure that this anonymous dead body was indeed L. Ron Hubbard.

*****
Anonymous is the New Anti-Hubbard out to do the right thing: Dismantle the Monster of Scientology that LRH created. This is shape-shifting and it is magick. Hence, the use of a mask is needed, for Anonymous is everyone and no one:

Legion is the Image of Scientology reflected back to itself but with this difference: The Cult is absent of any form of control over this image that stares back at it in disgust.

Legion is the fear, self-hate, and self-loathing that David Miscavige must experience everyday being himself, being the leader of an imploding Cult whose lies no longer work.

I watch the developments of Anonymous and Legion with great interest. These forces are arrayed against Scientology in a ruthless fashion, at last giving Scientology a taste of its own medicine. I see Anonymous and Legion as part of the inevitable process of Karma playing itself out against the Cult.

Legion is greater than OSA.
OSA knows this and shudders.
