Scientology's anti-family policies and practices

Post by caroline » Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:21 pm

Hubbard wrote many policies and orders on the family and sometimes provided his "scientific" justification for them. Scientologists accept Hubbard's "superior tech" on these matters and apply it, often to the detriment of many people including themselves.

I'll start this collection of related Scientology material in the public interest, especially in the interest and defense of children, who Scientology "handles internally" through the ABLE sector of Scientology, Applied Scholastics groups and off-shoots.

Being seen as "pro-family" is important for all politicians, and for most people who want to be seen as anything. Scientology provably is anti-family, and they should be seen that way by everyone.

Many thanks to Mark Plummer (http://warrior.xenu.ca) for collecting many of these internal documents relating to family matters.

SEA ORGANIZATION
FLAG ORDER 3167
6 April 1972

Parents Hat (Amends FO 485)

THE ORGANIZATION OF CHILDREN IN LAND BASED UNITS

As Sea Org members with children may now be posted in land-based SO units and orgs, it is important to establish policies on which correct organization and action can be taken to care for both parents and children.

DEFINITIONS

1. CADET: Any young person who has completed Staff Status II and AB Checksheet and has a post which he is holding in the Sea Org and who has a good ethics record.

2. CHILDREN: People who cannot handle an org or unit post. He or she is not on the payroll.

3. Babies/Small Children: People who are under 6 years of age who are not Cadets.

CHILDREN'S ORGANIZATION

4. Children (per the definition above) are cared for by a "Governess", separate from Cadets, Small Children or Babies.

5. A Nursery exists for the care of Small Children and Babies - The In Charge is the "Nanny". The Nursery is located in the Estates Section, Office of LRH. Small Cadets who are awarded Play Time, may do so in the Nursery.

6. No Children of non-Sea Org parents may use the Nursery facilities or be cared for by the Governess.

7. Children, Babies and Small Children may not be left untended on org premises, with or without their Nanny or Governess - although a visit of short duration, while under good 8c from Nanny or Governess, is permissible.

8. Discipline and care of Children is by the Governess per FO 1630.

9. Discipline of Small Children is by the Nanny per FO 3168.

10. Cadets are handled as SO crew by the MAA.

11. Children and Cadets may attend public or state Schools in their area, but a Tutor must be provided to assist the students after school hours to handle any confusions encountered in the school materials. Full standard Study Tech is used.

FO 3167
- 2 -

Children and Cadets may NOT be allowed to have losses in their education due to poor study systems in public schools.

12. Studies done in the org or unit must be by checksheet with full course Supervision and Study Tech.

PARENTS COMMITTEE

13. A Parents Committee is formed in each SO org and unit consisting of all SO members with Children, Small Children, babies or Cadets under the care of the org or unit. The Parents Committee is posted on the Org Board as an advisory body under the LRH Comm in the Office of LRH.

14. Officers of the Committee are elected by the Committee from its members. Officers elected are:

(a) President - acts as Chairman.

(b) Vice President - is Deputy to the President.

(c) Treasurer - handles any finances required for special projects or events and keeps finance records of same.

(d) Secretary - takes minutes, keeps Committee records, acts as Planning member where required, records Committee stats.

(e) MAA - takes roll, ensures all members present, does investigations as required by President or Committee.

15. THE PURPOSE of the Parents Committee is to iron out Nursery facilities and ensure the proper care and upbringing of Cadets, Children, Small Children and Babies of Sea Org parents.

16. THE IDEAL SCENE of the Parents Committee is SO Parents taking active interest and concern in their youngsters and seeing to their care, education and production as assets to the Sea Org and valuable Beings.

17. THE PRODUCT of the Parents Committee is adequate safe clean and hygienic facilities for youngsters, and bright happy healthy and capable young people who will become upstat Sea Org members.

18. THE STAT of the Parents Committee is:

(a) Total square feet of clean hygienic and safe space used for child care that week - can include outdoors areas and successful field excursion spaces. Stat to be provided by Estates Officer each week.

(b) Total number of healthy happy youngsters provided with good care that week, using a scale of points:

0 = Unsatisfactory
1 = Satisfactory
2 = Good
3 = Excellent.

Each parent is to interview his child daily and determine the points. Points are submitted to the Secretary who totals and graphs each week.

FO 3167
- 3 -

19. Any parent whose child's care has been unsatisfactory must do a Situation-Why-Handling eval and present to the Parents Committee.

20. All decisions for facilities and care of the children not covered in extant FOs or issues must be passed by the Parents Committee before implementation.

21. Any member of the Parents Committee may submit CSW to the Committee for improvement of conditions of their children. Such proposals must be within the economical capabilities of the org or unit and are forwarded either to the C/O for authorization and issue or direct to the Estates Officer, depending upon the magnitude or gravity of the action proposed.

22. The Parents Committee is held responsible for the conditions and well being of their children despite whoever in the org or unit is caring for them.

23. The Parents Committee is held responsible for the proper organization of children as covered above and in extant Sea Org policies and FOs.

24. Anyone complaining about child care, education or conditions who has not used and supported the Parents Committee fully may be Comm Eved.

The charge in all such cases is "Spreading discontent to encourage disaffection and desertion."

25. The Committee meetings of the Parents Committee are called and presided over by the President of the Committee. Failure to call such meetings in the presence of poor child conditions shall be construed as desiring such bad conditions to exist, and is subject to Comm Ev.

26. Routine Family Time schedules may be determined and passed by the Parents Committee and issued and activated upon the approval of the C/O and LRH Comm. All such schedules must have a clause concerning the post condition of the individual parent. Upstat crew have highest priority for Family Time privileges.

A/LRH Comm Aides, LRH Comms and Estates personnel are to enforce these policies.

CHILDREN AS ASSETS

In the American society exists a degraded contempt for children. Adults regard them as 'dear little cute things God damn them."

This attitude is not allowed in the Sea Org.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF A SOCIETY ARE AN ASSET AND MUST BE CARED FOR AND PROPERLY BROUGHT UP AS VALUABLE BEINGS. THOSE WHO DECIDE TO JOIN THE SEA ORG AND BE PART OF THE TEAM MUST BE ALLOWED TO DO THEIR BEST.

CHILDREN, DESIGNATION

Any child who has passed his staff status II and AB or Engine Room checksheet and has a post which he is holding in the Sea Org and who has a good ethics record is hereafter to be referred to not in a generality of "children" but as a CADET.

The word "children" is not to be used to describe these as it is a generality. If there are children about they are classified as children, but this does not include Cadets. Children are people who have not passed checksheets and have no paid posts in the Sea Org.

The title CADET must be conferred by Flag Order. Proof of qualification for the title must be given to the LRH Comm Staff.

A Cadet has rank equal to a Deckhand or Motorman.

GOVERNESS

The post of Governess is appointed for children who are not cadets, above the age of 6 or as determined by the Captain. The post is under Dept 9.

A child is one who cannot handle an org or ship post. He or she is not on payroll.

Quarters must be found or made (not in the nursery and not in the dorms) for such children.

Children may not smoke or possess matches. They may not have knives or toys which can be used as or resemble weapons. They may not wear Sea Org uniforms or parts thereof.

Children may only go on liberty with the permission of the Conning Officer and only accompanied by an adult.

Children must spend at least 10 hours each day studying. They may not roam the ship at large.

If a child or these children are found in Hold 1 or any hidden compartment of the ship they are to be locked up.

Their clothing and subsistance is paid for by their parents. They eat together and may not eat with the nursery.

They attend school together but not with the nursery or cadets.

Anyone below 6 is to be called "Little Children" or "babies".

The Governess is fully responsible for the acts, conduct and morality of the children.

Ethics Conditions may not be assigned children as they are not part of the SO. Misdeameanors or crimes by them cause an Ethics Condition to be assigned to the Governess as not keeping them in hand.

The Governess may spank or discipline children under her care at her own discretion.

Mary Sue Hubbard's rather off the cuff hat for nannies is item #4 of the Parents Hat Checksheet posted in the op.

NANNY HAT WRITE-UP

The following is an extract from a letter from Captain Mary Sue Hubbard in reply to a request for her Nanny Hat Write-Up. This is now issued as advice for use in the Sea Org in the handling of children:

1. Maintain the schedule laid down. Young children actually do prefer order in their environment.

2. Never punish children, but do run good 8-C and good control without any lower tone scale emotions or actions.

3. Never force a child to eat; have an abundant supply of fruits rich in Vitamin C available for them to eat instead.

4. A child's possessions are his own. Never enforce sharing if the child does not want to do so. With good 8-C, do enforce ownership if one child has taken the mest of another.

5. Never use one child as an example for good or for bad to other children.

6. Do answer a child's questions simply and with reality. If you do not know, do not give incorrect data; but say that you do not know.

7. Treat the child as a being. Do not pretend to be infallible. If you have done something wrong, apologize. In other words, children can be right, too.

8. Do not encourage children to tell tales. If they do, ask them how they have handled the situation. Encourage them to handle their own inter-personal relationships.

9. Let a child help, but do not enforce his help.

10. Keep small children busy doing something - but do not enforce such, just have things for them to do or play with. Encourage them to create things to do or to play.

That's about it - rather off the cuff, but the major points are there.

Love,
Mary Sue

CHILDREN - SHIPS REGULATIONS

There must be a person on the ship in charge of children 8 years and less of age. The rate is Ship's Nanny, Div. 3, Dept. 9. There must be a nursery area.

THe Nanny is responsible for the cleanliness and good order of the children and their quarters and possessions.

A Tutor is furnished for schooling.

A tight schedule must be maintained and must include:

(a) Exercise

(b) Meals

(c) School - The "Three Rs" etc.

(d) Scientology Study

(e) Work

The children eat in their own area at the usual meal times.

Any child older than 8 who has no post on the Watch Quarter and Station Bill comes under the Nanny.

Any child of 15 or less must complete his schooling if not possessed of a G.A.E.

The Ship's Nanny assigns conditions to children in her direct charge.

_________

Any member of the ships company that obstructs a midshipman, cadet or child from doing his work or deprives one of his possessions or a job is liable to an assignment of a Condition of Non-Existence, it being observed that the main thing that upsets young people is losing a job or possessions.

Depriving a midshipman, cadet or child of what is his or taking away task the child is doing or preventing him from doing his work or falling to hat him has been the basis of any trouble we have had with young people.

FAMILY DAY

The future of the Sea Org lies with its young members and young children of Sea Org members.

As members of and beings associated with the most ethical and dedicated group on this planet, they will be called upon to be the future leaders of Orgs, Ships and activities. Although young in body they are more than willing to take up larger responsibilities befitting their abilities and know-how.

To honor these important members of our team and to strengthen them, a Special Day is hereby set aside as their personal holiday.

"Family Day" is established as the first Sunday of June each year. The purpose of "Family Day" is to bring young Sea Org members and children of Sea Org parents even closer to their parents (or where their parents are not in the area, their Guardian's or Minor's mates).

On the first Sunday in June each year all young Sea Org Members (and young children of Sea Org Members) and their parents (or Guardian's/Minor's Mates as the case may be) are herewith granted a Special Day of Liberty to be spent together doing whatever they would like to do.

A dinner and other festivities and ceremonies can be arranged if agreed upon by survey among the people involved.

The important thing is that the holiday does occur. Executives in any Sea Org area are responsible to see that it does.

By strengthening the family bonds of young Sea Org Members and children of SO members we can help bring about a world-wide atmosphere of youth who can and do take responsibility for creating a better world where all dynamics can survive at the highest level of understanding.

All minors i.e. those under 21 (excepting in those countries where the Legal age of Consent is 18 ), who are a member of the SO without their legal guardians are to be assigned a "Minor's Mate" who acts in the capacity of Guardian. The duties of a Minor's Mate also apply to parents.

Minor's Mates are chosen by PCO and assigned with the agreement of the minor and Minor's Mate concerned.

Any ethics action needed to be taken on a minor may also include penalties for the Minor's Mate. However, if the matter was reported for handling by the Minor's Mate then he is immune from penalty.

The Minor's Mate is charged with the responsibility of the minor's steady progress as an individual and group member, well-being and in-ethics behaviour.

A Minor's Mate hat is to be provided by HCO with all necessary FOs and Policy pertaining to Minors.

SEA ORGANIZATION
FLAG ORDER 779
29th May 1968

SCHOOL HOURS

School hours are to be from 6.45 - 10.00 PM hours daily.

Messengers with duty in the evening will have study time during the afternoon. A schedule of rotation is to be made up. Sea org members have duties to perform, those duties are on regular S.O. hours.

It has been established that the smaller Sea Org members are required to have play time. This is not a requirement. They are more than willing to do their jobs and will, if given a chance.

Hence this schedule is established.

These orders are to be followed within 24 hours:

2. A board with cuphooks is to be placed at a convenient level accessible to the children.

3. Each hook is to be clearly labelled with the childs name and numbered in different coloures.

4. Parents are to provide their children with a large drawstring plastic bag into which toilet requirements such as soap, wash cloth, a comb, toothbrush and paste are placed. These are to be provided by the parents.

5. The bag is to be labelled boldly with your childs name.

6. This hangs on the same hook as the towel.

7. Children are to be taught how to care for their bodies i.e. how to wash all over, dry, clean their teeth and comb their hair before going to bed. Hands and face to be washed and hair combed after dressing in the morning, hands washed before every meal.

8. 8c with A.R.C. is needed to get each child interested in caring for his/her possesions.

9. Each child is to use his/her own toilet articles and no one elses. This is to be fully explained to the children. The children Do the drill until each child knows where his/her hook is, can fetch his/her towel and toilet bag and replace it without falter or comm lag.

10. The water used for bathing is to be changed in between each child being washed.

The above measures are to be carried out exactly.
