CoS pal Sheriff Baca gets FBI probe of his jail's violence

Post by Don Carlo » Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:42 am

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is a long time friend of CoS,* and may be one reason they get favorable treatment by the police, and police don't probe RPF abuses in LA County .

The Rachel Maddow Show Wednesday night said Baca is in trouble since he is head of the LA County Jail, where the FBI uncovered a gang of guards, flashing tatoos and gang hand signs, that beat up prisoners for no reason. The LA Times** is more coy, but does say there is a "rift" between the FBI and Baca.

Lee Baca...absolutely knew that Men’s Central Jail was a violent mess–and that street gang-like deputy cliques played an integral role in that violence... their on-the-ground captain of the jail John Clark told them so in 2006, as he attempted to fix the problem. He was never allowed to. Tanaka summarily removed Clark from his position before the reforms were even instituted. In the years to come, jail violence only got worse.

anonymous* on whyweprotest said the LA Police Department handles picketers, not the LA Sheriff Department. However, Sheriff Baca's support of CoS may give LAPD encouragement to favor CoS in pickets and complaints.

LOL. Not a chance. The LAPD doesn't need encouragement from Sheriff Baca. Elliot Abelson & Mike Rinder told me over a decade ago that the cult had the LAPD in it's "back pocket". Their schmoozing with the cult is evidence of that.

There has long been friction between the LAPD & the LASD. The City of West Hollywood was once patrolled by the LAPD until the city council grew weary of LAPD abuses of the gay community. The LASD now has jurisdiction and there has been a continuing political war engaged between the two on where the borders of West Hollywood lie.

Two years ago, the LAPD engaged in a gay entrapment sting which resulted in numerous arrests. The LASD went to court and asserted that the LAPD violated its boundaries; the court agreed, and the LASD dismissed the sting entirely & charges were dropped against those arrested. Several of those people have pending lawsuits against the LAPD and LASD deputies have been willing witnesses in their cases.

I spoke to Tiziano Lugli, the ex-Scilon who was visited by Mike & Marty last year, and were chased & almost run off the road by one of the cult's P.I.'s, who was subsequently arrested. Tiziano said the LASD deputies "absolutely despise" the cult & Sheriff Baca's support of the cult, some quietly referring to Baca as a "celebrity whore."

The problem is that the LASD, like the LAPD, has a military command structure, and deputies know that openly dissing a higher-up in the department could doom their careers, so they keep their disgust for Sheriff Baca amongst themselves.

Scientology has an article in Impact 127 "Los Angeles county " which discusses their interactions with the LAPD and LASD . (pp. 46-51). They also published this letter from Baca in the same issue:
Leroy D. Baca, Sheriff wrote:Dear Friends:

"The drug prevention campaign supported by the Church of Scientology, and its members, is very important to me in accomplishing my goal of a safer Los Angeles County. Crime is a problem that has many contributing factors. In fact, it is a much larger and more complex problem than a badge and a weapon or warrant can solve. We have to rely on community institutions to help us, and especially churches as the very soul of any community. This is especially important.

"Los Angeles County has 11 million people of almost every ethnicity on Earth. However, while the diversity has created an example of global unity, it has also led to tension and violence. Shortly after I took office in 1998, I formed the Multi-Faith Clergy Council to help me bring communities together to reduce violence and crime. The Church of Scientology was there at the first meeting and has been a vital partner ever since.

"The church was instrumental in bringing peace between rival gangs, and in keeping the peace in times of ethnic and religious conflict. Even well beyond the Clergy Council, the church has been consistently reliable in helping me to achieve my goal of a safer Los Angeles County.

"The Truth About Drugs education program that the church supports means everything to the safety of our schools and neighborhoods. It is a tremendously successful program, worldwide, and particularly needed. This is why we have trained a corps of our own officers in the use of this unparalleled program. I have called upon our Multi-Faith Clergy Council members to avail themselves of this program, and to use it to educate their communities and help law enforcement cut down on dangerous drug usage, and hence, the impact of the drug culture upon the citizens of this county.

"This joint venture between law enforcement, the clergy and community partners, acting together to educate our youth, is one of the most important initiatives I could ever undertake as Sheriff of Los Angeles County.

"I want to thank you for everything you do in helping me do my job because today crime in Los Angeles is at its lowest in 40 years. I am proud of our longstanding partnership in making Los Angeles County a safer place for everyone.

"Sincerely, LEROY D. BACA, SHERIFF"

Los Angeles County jails, under the leadership of Sheriff Lee Baca, are already the subject of an FBI probe into alleged inmate abuse. Now Baca is answering to civil rights leaders demanding answers and big changes.
Criticism of Baca has been intense. He admitted in a community meeting Tuesday night that there is a lot more that can be done. That's why he's joining with community leaders in a series of meetings to try to involve them in the reform process.
The American Civil Liberties Union says Baca ignored the brutal beating of inmates inside the county jail by deputies and should resign.
Baca says he's welcoming an FBI investigation into the matter.
"We're just about wrapping up those allegations, and we'll turn them over to the U.S. Attorney's Office, and they'll turn it over to the FBI," said Baca Tuesday.

At the moment, Baca is under a microscope, as the FBI and county supervisors investigate a stampede of complaints about deputies who physically abuse inmates, especially at Men's Central Jail. Some critics, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, are calling for Baca's resignation. So far, Baca has played dumb, insisting he didn't know about the alleged brutish culture among jailers in his jail
...Whitmore, one of Baca's top aides, who told the Weekly in a May 19 article headlined "Men's County Jail Visitor Viciously Beaten by Guards" that the big, old Men's Central Jail should be shuttered. Whitmore said that in the meantime, safety measures such as surveillance cameras should be placed in the jail's hallways and individual cells to protect deputies — and inmates.

Yet Baca has been sheriff since 1998 and has failed to fix many problems in the jail, including addressing deputy violence and resolving the still-inadequate accommodations for disabled inmates.

The ACLU and the ACLU of Southern California filed a federal class-action lawsuit today charging that Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and his top commanders condoned a longstanding, widespread pattern of violence by deputies against inmates in the county jails.

Then, there is this bonehead....

"Long before he made the news for allegedly smuggling a heroin-stuffed burrito behind bars, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Henry Marin was a reality TV star — of sorts. In the first episode of Fox's reality show "The Academy," which followed a class of Sheriff's Department recruits, Marin was portrayed as the dim-witted class bumbler."

Henry was booted out of the academy, but allowed to try a 2nd time, and he passed & became a LASD deputy.

The celebrity-loving Baca allowed producers to produce the TV show after they agreed to drop $250,000 into the laps of the LASD.

I have a friend who was recently released from prison in Fl. He tells of similar stories. This might be the tip of the iceberg....

doug4knfpu, you barely missed being deleted as spam, with that user name. I'm not trying to unmask all prison abuse, just CoS's special friend, Sheriff Lee Baca.

I don't see Sheriff Lee Baca-and-Scientologists photos lately, but I assume they're still buddies. Baca is STILL overseeing his Los Angeles jail which is rife with abuse.
